The other side of Reincarnation

Part One Hundred Fifteen — Enzo

  • Next Chapter

We gathered at dawn, just as we'd agreed.

 Myself.

 Ignivar.

And the small circle of people who'd become close enough to both of us that their presence felt necessary rather than simply ceremonial.

 Eris.

 Elaine.

 Ivy.

Ace, curled nearby, watching with the same quiet attention he brought to every significant moment.

"Ready?" I asked.

"Ready."

 Ignivar answered calmly.

But for the first time since I'd known him, I heard something genuinely uncertain underneath that usual composure.

This matters to him.

More than he's probably let himself fully admit.

Even to me.

I considered the name for a long while.

Longer than I had for anyone else.

I wanted to get this particular one right in a way that felt worthy of everything he'd given me—the training, the patience, the honest, hard-won friendship that had grown between us since that first humbling fight at Horizoncrest's border.

"Enzo," I said, finally.

"From now on, that's your name."

The shift that followed was unlike anything I'd witnessed before.

Not the sudden flare I'd grown used to with Eris, Ace, Elaine, or even Ivy.

 It was slower.

 Deeper.

His entire form seemed to settle into itself with the particular weight of centuries finally finding their proper shape.

<Evolution detected.>

 Anti-Subconsciousness reported carefully.

There was something almost reverent in its brief delivery.

<Classification: Elder Dragon. Full ascension confirmed.>

Elder Dragon.

That's—

That's not just a power boost.

That's an entirely new tier of existence.

 Enzo.

The name settled strange and new even in my own thoughts.

I was still adjusting to it after months of only ever knowing him as Ignivar.

 He opened his eyes slowly.

Something profound—and quietly overwhelmed—rested behind them.

"I feel—"

 He stopped.

His expression tightened slightly as he searched for words capable of properly capturing whatever had just happened to him.

"I feel like myself."

"Entirely."

 His voice trembled faintly.

"More than I have in decades."

"As though something I'd quietly given up hoping to reclaim simply..."

 He paused.

"...returned, all at once."

"Good different?" I asked, genuinely wanting to know.

"Good different."

Something almost boyish appeared in his relief.

It was entirely unlike his usual composed restraint.

"Considerably good, actually."

 Eris moved first.

She embraced him with the same easy warmth she extended to everyone in our growing family.

I watched something in Enzo's posture ease further at the gesture.

 Accepted.

 Properly.

 As part of something.

Rather than simply respected from a careful distance.

"Elder Dragon," Elaine said, testing the classification with clear professional interest.

"That's beyond even standard True Dragon status, isn't it?"

"Considerably beyond," Enzo confirmed.

He was still visibly adjusting to his own new scale.

"A tier most dragons never reach at all, regardless of how long they live."

"I hadn't dared imagine it as something actually available to me, given how long ago I walked away from that particular path."

He gave up his old bloodline's approval to become someone worth respecting on his own terms.

Now he's reached a height that bloodline probably never would have granted him anyway.

There's something genuinely poetic about that, honestly.

Ivy, quiet through most of the ceremony, finally spoke.

"Does this change your combat capability significantly?"

"Immeasurably."

Enzo tested something within his own aura.

The expression that followed made it obvious he liked what he felt.

"I could likely have handled Nyxara's earlier visit with considerably more confidence than I would have managed a week ago."

"Don't get too confident," I said dryly.

"I don't think confidence alone gets anyone through a fight with her."

"Fair point."

Something warm and genuinely amused crossed his newly settled features.

◆

We spent the rest of that morning simply existing together.

The specific quiet satisfaction of a family that had just watched one of its own become more fully themselves.

 No urgency.

 No immediate crisis demanding attention.

Just the rare, precious luxury of a good morning properly enjoyed.

Enzo.

Elder Dragon.

One more piece of this family reaching further than either of us would have guessed possible a year ago.

I looked around at everyone gathered.

 Eris, blind and unstoppable.

 Elaine, sharp and steady.

 Ace, dry and devoted.

Ivy, freshly named and fiercely loyal.

Enzo, finally whole in a way decades of quiet exile had never quite managed to make him.

And I felt something settle in my chest.

Something that had nothing to do with the growing threats still circling somewhere beyond our borders.

Whatever comes next—the demons, the Church, Vahlreth and Skorne, whatever else this world decides to throw at us—

I think we're actually ready for it this time.

All of us.

Together.

 I looked toward the horizon.

Let them come.

We'll be ready.
