The other side of Reincarnation

Part one hundred forty six — What the King Actually Saw

  • Next Chapter

King Alaric Thorne, when Kai finally greeted him properly in the mansion's newly finished council hall, looked like a man still working through several stages of disbelief at once.

"So you're Lord Kai," he said, studying him with open, careful curiosity.

"That's me," Kai said, doing his best to project something resembling proper diplomatic composure. "Welcome to Horizoncrest, Your Majesty."

"I've had rather an educational few days," Alaric admitted, something wry in the observation. "I arrived expecting to meet a ruler. I did not expect to nearly have a heart attack meeting your Elder Dragon."

"Enzo has that effect on people," Kai said. "He used to go by Ignivar, actually, before I gave him a proper name. Long story."

"Vance explained some of it," Alaric said. "That you'd granted him an entirely new identity, along with an evolution most scholars would have called mythical a year ago. I confess, Lord Kai, I've governed a kingdom for over a decade, and nothing in that time properly prepared me for a diplomatic visit quite like this one."

Fair, honestly. I don't think anything properly prepares anyone for Horizoncrest.

The High Priestess, standing nearby, finally stepped forward — visibly nervous in a way that didn't match the composed authority Kai had expected from someone in her position.

"Lord Kai," she said, formal, careful. "I owe you a considerable apology. On behalf of my institution. For everything set in motion by our own failure to properly investigate before acting."

"You don't need to apologize," Kai said, gentle. "A demon was pulling strings behind the scenes the whole time. That's not something your institution could have reasonably caught, especially given how carefully it was hidden."

"Regardless," she said, "the cost was real. I felt it necessary to say so directly, rather than let Sophia's account stand as the whole of it."

The rest of the afternoon settled into the specific, exhausting rhythm of formal negotiation — considerably more people than Kai had properly braced for, each with their own request, all of it funneling, gradually, toward the exact people he'd learned to trust with exactly this kind of thing.

"Peace, formally," King Alaric said, "between Ashford and Horizoncrest. And, if you're willing, trade — goods, supplies, whatever mutual benefit we can properly establish."

"Elaine handles that," Kai said, already gesturing her over. "Along with Aeron's family and our Roshan contacts. She'll get you exactly what you need."

The prince of Myrath — Sieg, still visibly adjusting to his own new role — made a considerably more specific request.

"Some of our own students would like to learn potion production from Horizoncrest, if that's permitted. We're rebuilding from nothing. Every skill we can bring home matters."

"Elaine again," Kai said. "She's basically running half this kingdom's actual functions at this point."

I should probably give her an actual title for all this, at some point.

The High Priestess raised one final matter, careful in her phrasing.

"Sophia is training a new cohort of Holy Knights — hand-selected herself. She wondered whether they might train under you directly."

"I'm really not the right person for that," Kai said, honest. "Enzo taught me most of what I actually know. I'd probably just confuse them."

"It doesn't matter," Sophia said, appearing at the Priestess's side, arms crossed, entirely unwilling to let him deflect that easily. "Will you train them?"

"Why not train them under Eris?" Kai offered. "She trained our own elite three, plus over a hundred more since. She's considerably better suited to this than I am."

The Priestess looked briefly stunned, then, slowly, agreed.

"The recruits will arrive in two days, then."

Sophia, apparently unwilling to let the matter drop entirely, added one more thing.

"I still want to train against you personally."

"You don't know when to give up, do you," Kai said, sighing.

 She smiled.

 "No."

 "Fine," he said. "Fine."

That evening, the entire mansion erupted into something considerably less formal — an impromptu celebration for Kai's new title that had, somewhere in the planning, escaped anyone's actual control over its own scale.

Myrath's nobles mingled with Ashford's own delegation, Horizoncrest's residents moved freely among both, and somewhere in the chaos, Nyxara reappeared, entirely uninvited but perfectly at home, already helping herself to the food.

"You're a Demon Lord now," she told Kai, delighted. "This calls for excessive celebration."

"It's already excessive," Kai said, watching the party sprawl across half the mansion's ground floor.

"Not excessive enough," she said, and disappeared back into the crowd before he could argue further.

Ace, predictably, had judged the evening's food with total seriousness before promptly falling asleep in a corner, entirely unbothered by the noise around him.

"He does this at every party," Eris said, fond, watching him snore contentedly.

"I'm impressed by his commitment," Kai said. "Truly dedicated to his own comfort."

Enzo, meanwhile, had struck up an animated conversation with several of Myrath's own soldiers about proper sword maintenance, entirely engrossed, apparently having decided the diplomatic tension of recent weeks was no longer his personal concern.

Sophia found Kai near the evening's end, considerably more relaxed than she'd been all day.

"This is a strange place," she said. "Wonderful. Strange. I mean both."

"Yeah," Kai said. "I've stopped trying to explain it properly. Easier to just let people experience it themselves."
