The other side of Reincarnation

Part one hundred seventy eight — Eight Hundred Thousand

  • Next Chapter

Kai returned to the underground facility, where Himari was waiting for him with a full report.

"One hundred thousand Holy Knights from the eastern Church," she said. "The same from the north. Three hundred thousand soldiers on each front. Eight hundred thousand total."

 "And?"

Kai caught something else in her expression.

"The Twelve Lights of the Holy Church have appeared," she added quietly.

 "Vorath and Skorne?"

"Vados and Senna haven't detected either of them yet."

 "Nero?"

"He found Ivy and Enzo," Himari said. "They're imprisoned in a crystal seal beneath Frost Island. He's confident he can break it."

 "Good."

 Kai turned toward Sophia.

"Ashford's going to need help. Go there. Support their forces directly."

Sophia nodded and immediately began moving toward the mist gate.

The remaining group quickly settled into position.

Kai. Nyxara. Chloe. Himari. And Ravessia, who had arrived earlier and remained nearby.

Ace, meanwhile, stayed bound to his standing orders regarding Yuki's safety in Tearmoon.

"I need to return to my own domain," Ravessia finally said, her voice reluctant. "I can't properly maintain my influence while stretched this far from home."

 "Understood."

 Kai looked at her.

"Thank you, for everything so far."

Ravessia gave a small nod before departing through her own gate.

With that, the shape of the war finally settled into place.

Before leaving, however, Kai returned to the capsule one final time.

 Inside lay his mother.

Her face was still and peaceful, untouched by the chaos unfolding outside.

Kai stared down at her for several seconds.

Not yet.

Not while I've still got this to finish.

 He raised one hand.

 The Genesis Barrier activated.

A vast field of power spread outward, enveloping the entire underground facility and sealing it as thoroughly as anything Kai had ever constructed.

He looked down at his mother's sleeping face once more.

"Before you wake up," he said quietly, "I'll be back, Mom."

 His expression hardened.

"I've got a score to settle first."

 Then he disappeared.

The battlefield split cleanly into its final positions.

Kai and Nyxara headed east, toward Vados's watchtower.

Chloe and Himari moved north, toward Senna's position.

 Sophia continued toward Ashford.

Ravessia returned to her own domain.

And Nero pressed forward toward Frost Island, determined to break the seal holding Ivy and Enzo.

Meanwhile, the allied western forces began their own march against Shimizu's advancing armies.

For the first time, the entire war had finally taken shape.

Kai arrived at Vados's watchtower, an enormous structure rising over the eastern border.

Rather than immediately joining the battle, he simply sat at its peak.

Below him, distant battle lines began to collide.

 Banners moved across the horizon.

 Spellfire illuminated the land.

The sounds of war reached the tower as little more than distant noise.

Not my fight.

Not yet.

 His thoughts weren't on strategy.

They circled instead around the names he had carried for years.

 Eris.

 Elaine.

 Doran.

 Fenrik.

Years had passed since some of them were gone, yet none had ever truly separated themselves from the same wound.

 Every name he'd lost.

 Every debt that remained unpaid.

 Kai waited.

The allied armies continued their advance against Shimizu's eastern forces.

The northern and eastern invasions pushed steadily forward.

Somewhere below, the war for the west had already begun in earnest.

By the time Kai settled atop Vados's watchtower, the war outside had fully committed itself.

Shimizu's eastern and northern armies were locked against the western alliance across two separate fronts.

The Holy Church's forces were engaged on both.

Senna held her position against the Northern Holy Lights.

Further east, Chloe and Himari faced their own share of the Eastern Lights.

Sophia fought alongside Ashford's defenders, holding the line.

Kai didn't move to join any of them.

Not my fight.

Not yet.

Ordinary soldiers dying by the thousands isn't what I came here for.

He remained seated, unhurried, watching distant banners clash beneath waves of spellfire.

And all the while, his thoughts continued circling the names he knew he would never stop carrying.

 Then—

Several enormous presences appeared without warning.

 They were unmistakable.

And they had arrived somewhere far beyond the actual battle lines.

 Kai's eyes narrowed.

Vorath.

Skorne.

Nao Shimizu.

Jiro.

 Then he felt something else.

 Something unfamiliar.

And something else...

Something I don't recognize at all.

Vados immediately straightened at the edge of the tower, his attention fixed on the distant source.

An instant later, Nyxara appeared beside Kai.

 Her expression had changed.

The usual ease in her eyes was gone, replaced by something rare.

 Focused.

 "They're here," she said.

 Kai didn't answer.

 He simply stood.

 Then he took off.

The three of them flew together, moving so quickly that the battlefield below became little more than a blur.

They continued far beyond the active battle lines until they finally reached a stretch of open, empty land.

 It was deliberately isolated.

 Far from either army.

Kai looked across the barren field.

They chose this spot on purpose.

Whatever's about to happen here would level anything nearby.

Five figures waited across the field.

Nao Shimizu stood at the center, composed and unhurried.

 Jiro stood close beside her.

Vorath and Skorne remained still, watchful.

And then there was the fifth.

 Kai didn't recognize him.

He was tall and calm, his presence carrying a weight that felt considerably older than his appearance suggested.

Kai, Nyxara, and Vados landed opposite them.

For a moment, neither side moved.

The battlefield behind them continued to burn.

 But here—

 Everything was silent.

Nyxara's composure cracked the instant she properly registered the fifth figure.

 "Demigra."

Disbelief was plain in her voice.

"Aren't you supposed to be dead?"

 "I was."

 Demigra answered calmly, almost pleasantly.

"Nao restored me. A rather sophisticated vessel, if I'm being honest about the craftsmanship involved."

 Kai's eyes narrowed slightly.

She killed him once... and brought him back anyway.

That's—

That's genuinely more dangerous than anything else I've learned about her so far.

He filed the detail away carefully, his attention shifting toward Nao.

 He watched her expression.

 There was no obvious reaction.

 No hesitation.

Nothing that revealed what else she might be capable of resurrecting, provided she had the right materials.

Before anyone could move further, a black flame suddenly bloomed beside Nao.

A woman stepped out of it.

 She was composed.

 Unhurried.

As though appearing in the middle of a battlefield was nothing more than an ordinary arrival.

"Took you long enough to respond," Nao said mildly.

"My apologies," the woman replied. "Your brother can be difficult to work around."

 Nyxara's eyes widened.

 "Mirella."

 Recognition was immediate.

 "What are you doing here?"

"Making sure Nao Shimizu doesn't die in this war."

 Mirella's answer was simple.

 Nyxara's expression hardened.

 "Why would you protect her?"

 "A contract."

 Mirella didn't hesitate.

"Made with her brother, long before I ever became a Demon Lord."

 Vados's expression shifted.

 "Kazuhiko."

Kai turned toward him, surprise flashing across his face.

 "Kazuhiko's your brother?"

 "Step-siblings."

Nao answered without the slightest concern.

The revelation hung in the air.

 For several seconds, nobody moved.

Kai's gaze slowly shifted between Nao and Mirella.

 Then toward Vados.

 And finally back to Nao.

So Kazuhiko wasn't just connected to the Onmyō Order.

He was her brother.

The battlefield suddenly felt considerably more complicated.
