The other side of Reincarnation
Part one hundred sixty nine — What Revenge Takes
Ravessia's eyes narrowed slightly, waiting.
"Revenge isn't justice," Kai said, lowering his gaze. "It doesn't heal anything. Doesn't bring back the dead. Doesn't erase the pain."
His hands curled slowly into fists.
"It only creates more of it. More hatred. More corpses. And the more I learn about what they actually did, the more that hatred grows."
He paused.
"And the longer you walk that path, the harder it gets to even remember why you started walking it."
He looked toward the horizon.
"Maybe that's what revenge actually takes from you. Not your life."
His eyes darkened.
"Yourself."
Ravessia said nothing, waiting.
"Maybe one day, once I've finally killed the people responsible," Kai continued, "I'll look at what I've become and realize I'm no different from them. Maybe I'll have lost everything that made me who I am."
A long silence stretched between them before Kai raised his head again.
"But even knowing that," he said, killing intent beginning to bleed faintly into the air around him, "I'll still do it."
Ravessia's expression shifted.
"I know revenge isn't the right path," he said, taking a step forward. "I know it'll bring suffering."
Another step.
"I know it might consume me."
His voice dropped to something barely audible.
"And I know that by the time this is over, there may be nothing left of the person I am today."
He stopped.
"But Vorath and Skorne took something from me when I was just a kid."
The pressure around him intensified.
"So I won't forgive them."
His eyes narrowed.
"I won't forget them."
The air itself seemed to shudder.
"And I won't stop."
"Not because revenge is righteous," Kai said, his voice absolute.
A faint, bitter smile crossed his face.
"But because this is the choice I've made."
He turned fully toward her.
"If I have to walk into hell to reach them, I'll walk into hell."
His killing intent surged.
"If I have to become a monster to kill them—"
His eyes went entirely cold.
"—then I'll become the worst monster this world has ever seen."
A final pause.
"But when it's over," he said, his voice softening, "I'll accept whatever remains of me."
Ravessia stared at him in silence, something shifting in her own understanding.
He's not trying to convince himself revenge is right.
He already knows it's wrong.
He simply doesn't care anymore.
A faint smile finally touched her own face.
"Is that so."
She looked directly into his eyes.
"Then there's nothing more for me to say."
Her expression softened, though something resolute remained underneath it.
"But remember this, Kai."
She stepped closer.
"When the day finally comes — when the hatred's consumed everything inside you, when revenge has taken the last piece of who you were, when you can no longer remember the person you used to be—"
A pause.
"Don't worry."
Her eyes sharpened.
"I'll be there. I'll be the one to stop you."
She turned away, one final warning trailing behind her.
"Even if you hate me for it. Even if you call me your enemy."
Her smile vanished entirely.
"And even if stopping you means I have to kill you myself."
She held his gaze one last time.
"I won't let you become something you can never return from."
Kai and Chloe returned to Horizoncrest not long after, the weight of that conversation settling quietly over him for the remainder of the day.
Ivy had already prepared his outfit for the meeting by the time they arrived — simple, dignified, exactly enough presence without excess.
Elsewhere, in Myrath, Eris and Enzo had spent that same stretch of days managing considerably more mundane troubles — a handful of nobles once again testing young Sieg's authority, this time over grain distribution rights left ambiguous by the kingdom's rapid rebuilding.
"They're testing you specifically because you're young," Eris told Sieg patiently, watching him work through another contentious council session. "Doesn't mean you're wrong to hold your ground."
"Enzo's presence alone usually settles most of it," Sieg admitted, glancing toward the Elder Dragon standing quietly at the chamber's edge, arms crossed, saying nothing at all.
"I've found silence works better than threats, most days," Enzo said, without looking over. "Let them wonder what I'm actually capable of, rather than telling them directly."
The council, predictably, reached agreement considerably faster than it had without him there.
The day of the Onmyō meeting finally arrived.
Someone came to collect Kai personally — and the moment he saw her, something in her aura control struck him as unusually, deliberately precise.
Ordinary skill wouldn't have caught it.
Ivy, watching from nearby, clearly already recognized exactly who she actually was.
Himari stood dressed and ready.
Chloe, the same.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Lord Kai," the girl said. "My name is Frederica. An envoy of the Onmyō Order. I've been sent to escort you to the Order's council. The details can wait until we arrive."
Her smile was polite, practiced.
"Shall we?"
Kai, Chloe, and Himari stepped into the teleportation working together, and were gone.
Nyxara arrived moments later, catching Ivy just after their departure.
"What name did that girl give?"
"Frederica," Ivy said.
Nyxara considered that.
"Frederica. I see."
She paused.
"So No.3's finally been given a name. Interesting."
The Grand Onmyō Citadel's presence hit Kai the moment he stepped through — vast, heavy, unmistakably significant.
Frederica showed him to his designated seat as the rest of the gathering slowly arrived.
Then he felt it.
A presence he recognized instantly.
Kai turned to find Nao Shimizu, flanked by Vorath, Skorne, and Jiro.
His body moved before conscious thought caught up, rage overriding every careful plan he'd made about patience.
Time stopped around him entirely, then reversed — Himari's doing, having already known, from everything he'd told her, exactly who Vorath and Skorne were and what they'd done.
"Haruto," she said, looking down at him, her voice firm.
"Sit."
Jiro's head turned sharply at the name.
Haruto.
His attention snapped toward Kai, Himari, and Chloe together.
He studied Himari's face a moment longer, recognition flickering despite the changed hair and changed eyes.
What's happening? Is that — is that Himari?
Did she just call him Haruto?
"Jiro?" Nao Shimizu said, glancing back. "What are you still doing standing there?"
Vorath and Skorne, allied with her as her escorts, said nothing.
Jiro fell back into position beside them, still visibly shaken.
Kazuhiko Ono entered next, flanked by Frederica and a second attendant.
Chloe's expression sharpened the moment she saw them both.
"Those two smell like Nero," she said quietly. "Nyxara. Ravessia. There's a gap in their auras, but I recognize the scent."
"Now that you mention it," Himari said, "when Frederica first came to collect us, I felt like I was standing in front of Nyxara herself."
Null — can you actually confirm what those two are? Kai asked.
"Appraisal complete," Null-Subconsciousness reported. "They are Primordial Demons No.3 and No.7."
You're kidding.
"I am not."
They're already named, then.
"Yes."
Like Nero?
"Close to Nero."
How did he manage to name two, when I struggled with just one?
Null-Subconsciousness sighed, audibly, for the first time Kai could recall.
That's new, Kai thought.
Frederica stepped forward to handle formal introductions.
"Before we begin, allow me to introduce the distinguished individuals gathered here today."
She moved through them in turn.
"Aeos Eldera, Leader of the Guild of Principality."
"Kronara Alfieri, Ruler of the Fiorano Province."
"Elaria Sylvarenne, Empress of the Dynasty of Eternal Verdance, Sovereign of the Elven Empire."
"Divo Agera, the Supreme Demon Lord."
Kai remained still, expression unreadable.
Then:
"The Destroyer. Demon Lord Nyxera."
Kai's eyes widened.
Wait — what?
He turned immediately toward Nyxara's seat.
What's she doing here? I thought—
He sighed internally.
You've got to be kidding me.
Frederica continued, unbothered.
"And, of course — Demon Lord Kai, the Draconic Demon."
Why does that sound so unnecessarily dramatic?
Kai blinked.
She stepped back, gesturing finally toward the seat at the gathering's head.
"Kazuhiko Ono, Founder and Leader of the Onmyō Order."
"Those are the distinguished guests who've arrived thus far," she said, and glanced toward the entrance.
Silence.
A minute passed.
Then another.
Kai raised an eyebrow.
Are we... waiting for someone?
Frederica checked the time.
"Apparently so."
The doors opened.
A small figure walked in, entirely unbothered by the fact that an entire gathering of rulers and Demon Lords had been kept waiting.
He yawned.
"Sorry I'm late."
Dude. You're literally the Time Dragon. How could you be late?
Frederica closed her eyes briefly, clearly used to this exact situation.
"Of course you are."
The boy simply smiled.
"Allow me to introduce Demon Lord Aeon Stillmere," Frederica said, "the Time Dragon."
Time Dragon.
Kai's eyes narrowed, studying the ancient weight behind the child's harmless appearance.
Far too ancient.
"That concludes the introductions," Frederica said, stepping back.
Aeon raised a hand lazily.
"Did I miss anything?"
Kai sighed.
This meeting is already turning into a headache.
