The Primordial demon returns
Chapter 58: Where Flame Defies Water
Arthur’s eyelids fluttered open, the transition from the crushing, necrotic gravity of the mountain trail to this surreal expanse feeling as sudden as a falling blade.
He found himself standing upon an infinite, slate-gray floor that stretched into a horizon swallowed entirely by a thick, pale fog. There was no sound, no wind, no warmth—only a profound, suffocating emptiness that pressed against his temples.
Instantly, the final warning of the Mountain of Death echoed sharply in his mind: "To ascend this mountain, you must lay bare the truth of your path. Prove the righteousness of your ambition, or be consumed by your own delusions."
Arthur took a steadying breath, his hands curling into tight fists. He knew the rules of these ancient trials. This was not a physical battle of brute strength, but a psychological and spiritual mirror designed to test the absolute conviction of a cultivator’s heart. As a fire-affinity mage whose ambitions burned hotter than any ordinary flame, his path was forged in relentless drive, sacrifice, and an unyielding refusal to remain at the bottom of the food chain. He needed to reach the upper echelons of power before the Royal Academy doors swung open. He had no room for doubt.
With a soft, swirling hiss, the dense fog directly in front of him began to part.
A tall, towering figure materialized from the mist. The entity’s face and features were entirely obscured by a shifting, pitch-black shadow, but its garments were unmistakably clear: heavy, flowing midnight-blue robes embroidered with silver aquatic runes, topped by a sharp, pointed blue hat that cast an even deeper shadow over its nonexistent face.
The robed figure raised a slender, shadowy hand. The surrounding air instantly plummeted in temperature, water vapor condensing into intricate, glowing blue magical circles that hovered in the air like floating gears.
Hiss—!
From the center of the largest magic circle, a fluid, serpentine shape burst forward. It was a water dragon, roughly three feet in length, its body composed of compressed, high-pressure elemental liquid that rippled with razor-sharp kinetic energy. With a piercing screech, the miniature beast locked its glowing blue eyes onto Arthur and shot straight toward him like a living javelin.
Arthur’s heart spiked, but his expression remained ice-cold. He did not panic. In fact, a grim smirk touched the corners of his lips.
Elemental counter-compatibility, Arthur analyzed instantly in his mind. If this trial is designed to test a fire mage, it naturally summons its conceptual opposite—water and earth. A fire-affinity path is inherently volatile, explosive, and destructive. To test its resolve, the trial pits it against the element that seeks to quench, suffocate, and erode it.
Knowing the logic behind the test made it infinitely more manageable.
As the water dragon closed the distance, Arthur did not hesitate. He swung his right arm outward, instantly weaving a red magic circle in the palm of his hand.
"Crimson Burst!" Arthur shouted.
A concentrated sphere of scorching orange flame erupted from his palm, colliding head-on with the oncoming water dragon.
BOOM!
The impact triggered an immediate thermal reaction. A massive cloud of scalding steam billowed outward, temporarily blinding both combatants in a thick, white shroud of humidity. But water magic was sustained by the environment, and the robed illusionist did not miss a beat.
From within the steam, a second, larger magic circle ignited. Three more water phantoms—shapeless, jagged hounds forged from freezing torrents—pounced out of the mist, aiming directly for Arthur’s flanks.
Arthur’s boots slid backward against the slate floor as he pivoted, his mind racing through his spell repository. He swept his hand across the ground, tracing a semicircle of blazing runes.
"Flame Wall of Raging Tides!"
A semi-circle barrier of roaring, vertical fire sprang into existence around him. When the water hounds slammed into the barrier, they hissed violently, turning into boiling mist before they could breach his defenses. However, the sheer volume of water began to dampen the edges of Arthur’s flames, hissing loudly as the heat fought a grueling war of attrition against the damp cold.
Across the clearing, the shadow-faced robed figure raised its staff. The pointed blue hat dipped slightly, and an eerie, melodic incantation echoed from the void. The slate floor beneath Arthur’s feet suddenly trembled. Water runes erupted from the stone, forming heavy chains of liquid pressure that wrapped tightly around his ankles, attempting to drag him down and pin him to the earth.
Arthur gritted his teeth, feeling the bone-chilling cold seep through his boots. The psychological weight of the trial began to press down on his consciousness.
Whispers echoed in the damp air—voices of doubt, reminding him of how far behind he was compared to true prodigies, how weak his starting foundation had been, and how easily he could be crushed in the grand empire.
"Your ambition is foolish," a ghostly voice whispered from the mist, mimicking the robed figure. "A low-tier fire mage dreaming of the Royal Academy? You are nothing more than kindling for others to burn."
Arthur’s eyes flashed with fierce, burning rage. He clenched his fists so hard his knuckles turned white.
"Shut up!" Arthur roared, his voice echoing across the empty void. "You know nothing about my path!"
The fire within his dantian surged violently, reacting to his surging emotions. His mana exploded outward in a fiery shockwave, shattering the liquid chains around his ankles into boiling spray.
The robed figure didn’t flinch. It pointed its shadowy finger forward, and a massive, towering wave of dark blue glacial water—resembling a localized tsunami—rose into the air above the arena, threatening to crash down and completely extinguish him in a single, overwhelming blow.
Arthur stared up at the impending wall of water, his chest heaving. He knew defensive spells wouldn’t be enough to survive this. To pass this trial, he couldn’t just defend against his counter-element; he had to incinerate it entirely. He had to prove that his fire was not easily quenched.
He closed his eyes for a fraction of a second, centering his absolute ambition—his burning desire to stand at the absolute summit, to surpass every rival, to carve his name into the annals of history, and to ensure he never tasted helplessness again. When he snapped his eyes open, they burned with a terrifying, golden-red luminescence.
"If water wants to drown me," Arthur muttered, his voice cold and resolute, "then I will turn this entire world into a furnace!"
He thrust both palms upward, channeling every ounce of his spiritual mana, burning through his stamina, and pushing his fire-affinity core past its absolute breaking point. A massive, complex, multi-layered magic circle bloomed beneath his feet, radiating an oppressive heat that melted the very slate floor he stood on.
"Flame-Dragon’s Ascendant Wrath!"
From the blazing magic circle, a roaring, majestic dragon forged entirely of blinding white-hot plasma and roaring crimson flames surged upward. It was ten times larger than the opponent’s water serpents, radiating a temperature so intense that the surrounding fog vanished instantly, replaced by a roaring sea of fire.
The colossal fire dragon collided directly with the descending tsunami.
KABOOM!
The shockwave shook the entire illusionary space. For a moment, steam filled the entire universe, turning the world into a blinding white abyss of unimaginable pressure. The water wave fought fiercely, trying to suppress the flames, but Arthur’s unyielding willpower poured fuel into the fire. The sheer intensity of his ambition pushed the plasma flames higher, vaporizing the water in a blinding flash of incandescent light.
CRACK!
The tsunami split apart, and the roaring fire dragon surged past it, devouring the robed shadow figure in a cataclysmic pillar of intense heat.
The robed figure raised its staff defensively, but the sheer force of Arthur’s resolve shattered the illusionist’s defenses instantly. The blue robes tore apart, the pointed hat dissolved into ash, and the shadowy body cracked like fragile glass before shattering into millions of glowing blue particles that drifted away into the clearing air.
Silence returned to the void.
The heavy fog slowly rolled back, revealing that the infinite slate floor and the misty expanse were beginning to dissolve. The oppressive pressure vanished from Arthur’s chest, replaced by a warm, revitalizing surge of pure elemental energy that flooded his mana channels, permanently solidifying his foundation.
Arthur stood amidst the dissipating embers, breathing heavily, sweat dripping down his forehead, but a triumphant, victorious smile spread across his face.
He had faced his trial. He had proven the absolute truth of his path. And the Mountain of Death was finally ready to yield its secrets.
Just as he thought his trials were finally over, a large group of figures wearing pointed blue hats suddenly appeared before him.
All of them raised their hands and began casting the same blue spell. Judging by its power, it was a Rank Three Spell.
They were preparing to attack Arthur simultaneously.
Seeing this, Arthur’s face turned pale.
He hadn’t expected this at all. He was completely unprepared for an attack of this scale.
