Chapter 533 -333: Zog is Uniting the Dragon Race
Zog used the simplest language to explain what a courier service was to this group of dragons, whose level of education suggested they’d dropped out of prenatal school.
“Your future job will be to deliver something to a certain place on behalf of a customer.”
The dragons, sitting attentively, looked curious. It sounded like a rather easy job.
They were long used to running around all over the place.
Life really wears a dragon down.
Zog continued to explain the details of their work.
“Since this is a courier service, delivering one item at a time would be too slow and expensive. So, we’ll need to gather a batch of orders for the same two locations and transport them all at once. This will lower our costs and dramatically increase efficiency. You’ll be responsible for carrying these bulk shipments to their destinations.”
Once the Dragon Race courier service was established, there was also hope of getting the Dragon Beast freight transport up and running.
When he had previously tested whether Dragon Beasts could haul cargo, two problems had emerged.
Flying long distances required Magic Power, and they couldn’t carry very much. Now, however, there was a new method of transportation. And although the intelligence of the Dragon Beasts was less than promising, they could probably learn it with enough training.
Second, Dragon Beasts were not easy to control. But if they were led by a proper member of the Dragon Race, it would be no trouble at all.
Dragon Beasts defaulted to treating pure-blooded dragons as their leaders, even though the dragons themselves didn’t consider them kin.
A sad story of unrequited loyalty.
This way, if there weren’t enough dragons, one dragon could lead several Dragon Beasts, forming a “convoy.”
Of course, the final step of the delivery route—getting the package into the customer’s hands—would still have to be handled by other intelligent races.
Having dragons zipping through city streets and alleys to make deliveries was still unrealistic.
“As for your salary and benefits…”
Before Zog could finish, a dragon raised its claw.
“Speak.”
“What’s a salary?”
“It’s what you get after you finish working. You can’t work for free, you know. It’ll be paid in the form of money—specifically, Gold, Silver, and Copper Coins.”
Coins had undergone a major change. They were no longer made of actual gold, silver, and copper, but were now made of cheap metal alloys, retaining the names only.
This was thanks to the Loman Empire, which had once swept across the Continent.
Although the people of Feilin didn’t have a very good impression of the once-mighty Empire, it had indeed made some important contributions.
It established a common tongue and a gold-standard system, ending the practice of making currency directly from rare metals.
However, the system of weights and measures wasn’t standardized by Loman. That credit went to the Research Institute. The early scientists had been utterly fed up with the chaotic variety of measurement systems, so they established a single standard. Thereafter, all published works had to adhere to it. The standard quickly gained the approval of various royal families and was widely implemented.
In short, because Gold Coins weren’t actually made of “gold,” Zog was the only member of the Dragon Race who enjoyed hoarding money.
The other dragons didn’t quite recognize the value of this new money made from worthless metal.
‘This was a good thing for Zog.’
‘After these dragons got paid, besides buying food, they would definitely spend the rest on things they truly liked: gems, precious metals, Magic Items, works of art, and so on.’
‘They had absolutely no concept of saving.’
‘What a great habit!’
‘Keep the money circulating, and the economy will prosper.’
‘One dragon who liked to hoard money like a chipmunk—himself—was more than enough.’
“So, what about the exact salary? It will be calculated once a month based on the distance and volume of your deliveries. The detailed payment rules will be distributed to you.”
The White Dragon immediately raised its claw. “I won’t be able to figure that out!”
“You don’t have to. We’ll do the math for you. Don’t worry, it’ll definitely be enough for you to buy food.”
Zog then went on to introduce other benefits, such as a minimum workload, fixed holidays, year-end bonuses, free physicals, and a whole host of other perks.
Whether or not they understood was another matter; the main goal was to give the impression that the benefits were plentiful.
And in truth, there were quite a lot of them.
“Before you officially start working, you’ll need to familiarize yourselves with the routes.”
There was no GPS in this era; things like satellites were still a distant dream.
For the initial phase of the courier service, Zog planned to open only one route running from north to south through all of Sutton, connecting the Northern Domain, Deepwater City, the Royal City, and Twin Tower City.
His transport capacity was limited, and besides, online shopping required a phone. The phone penetration rate in these cities was high enough, their average income was also high, and they had the basic conditions necessary for e-commerce to develop.
However, even to run the courier business in just these four regions, the current number of dragons was still a little too low.
“It will be a while before the courier service officially launches. In the meantime, I have another job for you. Didn’t you mention before that you’ve been in contact with other groups of dragons and know where many of them are?”
“Yes,” the Green Dragon nodded.
“In that case, I need you to go find these dragons, or at least provide their locations. We welcome every dragon to become a glorious employee of Longtong Express.”
If every new dragon that joined knew the locations of a few other dragon groups, Zog would sooner or later be able to contact every dragon on the Continent.
He didn’t know exactly how many there were. Ever since the destruction of the dragon kingdom, the Dragon Race had remained scattered, and it wasn’t like there had ever been a dragon census.
The best-case scenario, of course, would be that the number of surviving dragons was sufficient to establish a freight network across the entire Continent.
Hearing Zog’s words, the Green Dragon became visibly excited, its gaze fixed on Zog with pure adoration.
‘In his eyes, Zog was going to unite the entire Dragon Race!’
‘It had been too long! A powerful Ancient Dragon had finally stepped forward to restore the Dragon Race to its former glory!’
As a young dragon, everything he knew about the Dragon Race’s mighty past came from legends.
