Ahead lay a route out of Kharos.

The blue lamps led through a narrow passage that never widened and never turned. Behind the team, the Night Market folded its noise into silence. Ahead, the lamps showed a wet darkness and the distant crash of waves.

Vessa walked with her eyes fixed on the floor.

"My night is still in the Clock Court," she said.

Austin Veyron did not pretend otherwise. "We will go back before the next moon."

"We might not."

"Then we try."

She gave a small, tired nod. "That is better than a promise you cannot keep."

Nyra held the neutralized heart shard beneath her coat. Blue-black light leaked faintly between her fingers. "If Vordessa trades a sovereign claim for this kind of fragment, what does she become?"

Sable’s expression darkened. "A sovereign claim does not grant power by itself. It grants recognition. Courts, markets, and old territories start treating someone as the authority over a thing."

"What thing?" Rin asked.

"Whatever she can make afraid enough to accept it."

Austin Veyron felt the shard’s low pull answer that idea. DEVOUR wanted to know what a sovereign claim tasted like. The hunger did not care whether the claim was earned, bought, or forced.

Veyra’s shoulder brushed his.

"Not a target yet," she said.

"Not a target," he agreed.

The blue lamps ended at a black tide pool beneath a stone arch. On the far side, pale cliffs rose under a moonless sky. The air smelled of salt, old bone, and rain.

"The Bone Coast," Vessa said.

They stepped through.

The tide pool moved.

White shapes rose from the water, skeletal raiders in barnacle armor with hooks made from rib bone. Their faces were covered by smooth masks carved from driftwood. At their center swam something long and dark, an eel-shaped construct threaded with silver market tags.

The bone-salt raiders formed a line across the shore.

"Debt-bearers," their leader called. "The coast accepts all unpaid passages."

Vessa’s black token flared in her palm.

The eel surged from the water and wrapped around the nearest blue lamp. Silver tags spread along the sand, writing a line between Kharos and the coast.

ENTRY REQUIRES CLAIM.

The raiders advanced.

Rin’s arrows struck two masks and drove them back into the tide. Veyra met the first hook with her blade, turning the blow aside before it could catch Vessa. Sable’s crown shard flashed white against the silver tags, but the eel kept generating more from its scaled body.

Nyra raised the heart shard. "It is trying to use the market debt as a key."

"Then we break the key," Austin Veyron said.

The eel lunged for him.

It opened a mouth full of paper teeth and bit down on the air near his chest. A market tag snapped around his wrist.

ACCEPTED AT BORDER.

Austin Veyron felt the entry claim trying to spread through the group. If one person accepted passage as debt, the coast could claim them all as cargo.

DEVOUR rose immediately.

"Target," he said. "Entry-claim clause. Nothing from the tide, the market debt, or the raiders."

"Witnessed," Veyra said as she cut a hook chain away from Rin.

"Witnessed," Sable replied.

Austin Veyron caught the tag at his wrist.

DEVOUR opened. The clause tasted of saltwater and paper. Beneath it was a simple lie: that crossing a border made a person belong to the place that saw them cross.

ACCEPTED AT BORDER.

He consumed the claim.

The silver tags along the shore went blank.

The eel shrieked, twisting through the tide pool. Its body lost shape as the market marks peeled away. Veyra drove her blade through the exposed dark core. Rin’s arrow struck the point where the creature met the water.

It dissolved into foam and black paper.

The raiders hesitated.

Their leader lowered its hook. "You are not debt-bearers?"

"We have debt," Vessa said. "It does not make us yours."

The leader’s driftwood mask turned toward her. "Then the court will be interested."

The raiders retreated into the tide without another attack.

For several breaths, only waves moved.

A woman emerged from behind a cliff boulder with a spear held low. She was adult, lean, with sea-green horns and a coat stitched from sailcloth. A long scar crossed her left cheek.

"You should not stand on that shore after moonless tide," she said. "The court sends claim-eaters whenever it smells Kharos tags."

Rin kept her bow drawn. "Who are you?"

"Call me Orena. I guide wreck runners and people who refuse to become harbor inventory."

"Why help us?" Nyra asked.

Orena looked at the heart shard beneath Nyra’s coat. "Because I know what that thing means. Vordessa passed through two days ago with a red shard and three court envoys. She went to Ossuary Harbor."

Sable took a step closer. "The Abyssal Court is convening?"

"Tomorrow night. They will trade her a sovereign claim if she can prove the shard will root a territory."

Austin Veyron looked west, where the coast road disappeared between pale cliffs.

"Can you take us there?"

Orena considered him. "I can guide you to the harbor. I do not belong to your group, and I leave if this becomes a crown march."

"Agreed," Austin Veyron said.

"You agree fast."

"I have been learning."

Orena’s mouth twitched as though she was deciding whether that was a joke. "Then listen. The coast has two roads. The bone road is quicker but watched. The storm road is safer but crosses a drowned town where the dead repeat their last contracts. You choose."

"Storm road," Veyra said.

"No argument?" Orena asked.

"No," Austin Veyron replied. "We have time to be careful. We do not have time to be owned."

The coast guide nodded once.

The storm road began in a drowned fishing town below the cliffs. Roofs poked through black water, and strings of old contract bells hung between leaning chimneys. Every bell rang when the waves touched it.

"Do not answer any voice from the windows," Orena warned. "The drowned repeat the last terms they accepted."

A woman’s voice called from a flooded doorway. "Just one hand. Pull me free, and you can have the boat."

Nyra slowed. The voice sounded terrified.

Orena caught her sleeve. "That house sank a century ago."

The door opened wider. Black water spilled across the street, carrying a contract written in sea foam. The words offered safe passage in exchange for a witness.

Sable pressed the crown shard against the water. "No witness. No bargain."

The foam collapsed. The voice faded without anger, only exhaustion.

Austin Veyron felt the old urge to solve it, to devour the lingering contract and silence the whole town. He left it alone. Some grief was not a weapon he needed to take.

They moved along the cliffs before the tide could turn again.

At the first ridge, Vessa opened the relay token. The line to Grand Meridian was weak across the sea paths, but Elena’s white script answered after several flickers.

STATUS?

Austin Veyron wrote the warning in plain terms.

VORDESSA AT OSSUARY HARBOR. ABYSSAL COURT MAY GRANT SOVEREIGN CLAIM. MARKET DEBT DEFERRED UNTIL NEXT MOON. PREPARE FOR COURT ENVOY INLAND.

Elena’s answer arrived quickly.

MESSAGE RECEIVED. ENVOY TRACKED ON EASTERN ROAD. CITY WILL NOT SIGN.

Austin Veyron read the last line twice.

The Freehold was learning without him.

Behind them, the Night Market’s blue lamps vanished beneath the tide.

Ahead, the Bone Coast stretched toward Ossuary Harbor and the court that could turn Vordessa’s broken shard into a kingdom.
