The first bell rang through the reef.

It wasn’t a sound so much as a hunger made audible, something felt in the teeth before it was heard in the ears. The stone under Austin Veyron’s boots vibrated. Every black coral tube in the feeding galleries pulsed red at once, the whole network lighting up like a single organ finally waking to its purpose.

Selka turned toward the maintenance tunnel where Kessa and the freed captives were disappearing.

"Go," she told them. "Do not wait for us."

Kessa looked back, short blade in hand. "The core is above you," she said.

"I know."

"We can fight."

"You can live," Veyra said. "That is the fight you chose."

Kessa nodded and led the others into the tunnel, no argument left in her.

Austin Veyron’s team ran up the stair toward the core chamber, the walls shaking with each new bell resonance. Red light poured through the black coral tubes, carrying a command that Austin Veyron could almost taste on the back of his tongue.

HUNGER, WAKE.

DEVOUR surged so hard his vision narrowed to a pinprick.

He saw every feeding gallery below them at once, a flood of sensation with nowhere to put it. Adult prisoners in dark cells. Conditioned hounds. Workers wearing black cords. The command was touching all of them simultaneously, trying to turn hunger into motion and motion into obedience, one gallery at a time, one person at a time, until the whole reef moved as a single hand.

Veyra caught his elbow as he stumbled.

"Target?" she asked.

"Not yet," Austin Veyron said through clenched teeth. "I can feel too much."

"Then do not take anything."

The words steadied him more than he expected them to.

They burst into the upper gallery and found three conditioned guardians blocking the door to the core. Each wore black reef armor and a red muzzle. Their eyes were blank, fixed somewhere past the people standing in front of them. In their hands were hooked blades meant for hauling nets and bodies alike, repurposed without much ceremony.

The first guardian charged Selka.

Orena intercepted with her spear. The impact drove her back a step, but she turned the hook aside at the last moment. Rin’s arrow struck the guardian’s shoulder joint. It didn’t slow down at all.

Sable raised the broken crown shard. "The muzzles are carrying the bell command," she said.

Veyra moved with her. While Orena held the guardian’s weapon locked, Veyra cut the muzzle strap clean through. Sable pressed the shard to the red metal.

The guardian froze mid-motion as its eyes cleared for one stunned, disoriented breath.

"Run," Veyra told it.

The adult demon dropped the hook blade and ran down the stair without asking a single question, like something had just been lifted off its back that it hadn’t known was there.

The second guardian came for Nyra.

The heart shard under Nyra’s coat flared blue-black in response. The guardian hesitated, caught between Vordessa’s red fragment and Nyra’s resonance, unable to reconcile the two signals pulling at it.

Austin Veyron saw the narrow command inside the muzzle. Not the whole bell. A repeated instruction aimed squarely at the guardian’s hunger, over and over.

"Target," he said. "Wake-and-obey phrase in the muzzle. Nothing from the guardian."

"Witnessed," Veyra answered.

"Witnessed," Sable said.

Austin Veyron caught the guardian’s red muzzle with the root chain.

DEVOUR opened.

The command tasted like starvation, raw and specific.

HUNGER, WAKE. OBEY.

He consumed only obey.

The guardian staggered. Its hunger remained, painful and real, but it was no longer pointed at someone else’s will. The adult demon dropped to both knees, shaking hard.

"Food," it whispered.

Orena tossed it a ration bar from her pack. "Eat," she said. "Then go."

The third guardian looked at the others, then at the core door, something flickering behind its blank eyes. Fear, unmistakably.

"I do not want to fight," it said.

"Then do not," Selka replied simply.

The guardian stepped aside and the core chamber door opened before them.

Beyond it lay a vast hollow inside the Hunger Reef. Black coral rose in arches from a pool of red-lit water, the whole space humming with contained pressure. Hundreds of adult demons stood in circles around the pool, each wearing a red muzzle or black cord. Some were dockworkers. Some were fighters. Some were people Austin Veyron had seen in the settlement lanes just hours before, their faces slack now with conditioned hunger, nothing left in their expressions that he recognized.

At the center stood Vordessa.

Her forge body was cracked from the Bone Cathedral, fractures running visibly along her arms, but the red shard above her hand burned fiercely regardless. Beside her rose the Maw Regent.

The Regent was not humanoid. Its body was a mountain of black flesh and reef bone, half-submerged in the red pool, too large for the chamber to fully hold. A round mouth opened where its face should have been, lined with thousands of teeth stacked in uneven rows. Its voice came through the chamber floor itself, less spoken than felt.

"First bell wakes them," it said. "Second bell binds them. Third bell makes them mine."

Vordessa looked toward Austin Veyron from the edge of the pool.

"You are late," she said.

"No," Austin Veyron said. "You are early."

The Regent laughed, and the sound made the conditioned demons twitch in unison, a shiver running through the entire chamber.

"Your Devourer understands hunger," it said. "He could command this army with one thought. He only lacks the courage to accept what he is."

The red shard pulsed as every muzzle in the chamber lit brighter at once.

The second bell began to form in the black coral above them, gathering itself.

Nyra stepped forward with the neutralized heart shard raised. Blue-black light met Vordessa’s red glow head-on. The two fragments pulled against each other violently, shaking the surface of the red pool.

"I can interrupt the link," Nyra said, straining. "But I cannot hold it long."

Ceryn moved along the outer wall, marking exits and writing rapid witness lines on bone paper without breaking stride. "If they break free, the north galleries are open," the record keeper said. "We can move them out."

Selka looked at the hundreds of conditioned people filling the chamber. "Not all of them can run. Some will attack anything they smell."

"Then we give them a different direction," Veyra said.

She turned toward the nearest circle of captives, voice raised and steady. "You are not the Regent’s hunger. You are people who are hungry. When the link breaks, move to the north gallery. Food and water are there."

A few heads turned toward her, slow and uncertain while the second bell rang.

A red light crashed across the chamber like a physical wave and Austin Veyron felt the command hit him too, full force.

HUNGER, BIND.

DEVOUR exploded inside his chest. For one dizzying instant, every person in the chamber became a source of power, every appetite a thread he could seize and hold. The Maw Regent’s offer wasn’t a lie, and that was the worst part. He could take the command, devour it, and become the one thing the army followed without question.

Veyra grabbed his face and forced him to look at her.

"Name it," she said.

"The whole command," Austin Veyron said. "I want to take the whole command."

"And?"

"It would make them mine." He shouted.

"Then do it!"

Sable stood on his other side. "What is the narrow target?" she asked.

Austin Veyron looked at the red network laid bare in front of him. The command was layered, deliberate. Wake. Bind. Claim. The first layer had already spread. The second was binding now, actively. The third hadn’t begun yet.

"Bind," he said. "Only bind. Not hunger. Not the people. Not the army."

"Witnessed," Veyra said.

"Witnessed," Sable echoed.

Austin Veyron stepped into the red pool.

The water burned around his boots, hissing faintly. The Maw Regent’s mouth opened wider, impossibly wide.

"Take it," the sovereign-beast urged. "Take them."

DEVOUR opened.

Austin Veyron seized the command line as it flowed from the red shard into every muzzle in the chamber at once.

BIND.

He consumed the word, and only the word while the chamber went still.

Hundreds of red muzzles went dark simultaneously.

The conditioned demons staggered. Some fell. Some grabbed their heads, disoriented. Some simply stood frozen, no longer sure what direction their hunger was supposed to point them in.

Nyra screamed as the two heart fragments pulled harder against each other, the strain visible on her face. Vordessa’s shard cracked along one edge.

The Maw Regent rose from the pool, water and black coral sliding from its massive body in sheets.

"You have broken the second bell," it said. "But you have not stopped hunger."

Vordessa’s forge body began to dissolve into red light around the shard, unraveling at the edges.

She looked at the Regent, then at Austin Veyron.

"Keep your people," she said. "The Maw will teach you what they become when hunger is all they have left."

The Regent opened a deep maw beneath the red pool. Vordessa and her shard dropped through it in a flash of red, gone in an instant.

The Maw Regent followed, dragging a wave of black water behind it as it sank from view.

The core chamber shook violently and the third bell hung silent above the reef for now.
