The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's
Chapter 156: Ember Ration
The hunger plague was about to become a ceremony.
Before sunrise, Ember Hold’s outer camps were already awake and gathering.
Thousands of people crowded into the ash square outside the fortress walls. Refugee tents spread out between burned wagons and old military trenches, patched with whatever cloth their owners had managed to carry. Children sat on the corners of blankets while the adults around them watched the central platform, where Kharvek’s soldiers were stacking ration crates in neat, red-marked rows.
Above them all, the warlord’s banner hung from the fortress wall: a black hand holding a bowl of flame.
Austin Veyron’s team entered the square alongside the convoy they had freed in the canyon. The clean-route paperwork gave them a legitimate reason to be there, but it did nothing to make them welcome.
Vessa kept the documents where everyone could see them. Ceryn carried the record sheet. Nyra stayed close to Austin Veyron, the heart shard hidden beneath her coat. Veyra and Sable moved along either side of the group, not guarding the others like owners would, but making sure no one could isolate any of them from the rest.
The refugee woman from the convoy, whose name was Arin, led the clean-route witnesses. No one had asked her to come; she had chosen to.
"If Kharvek says his rations saved us," she said, "I will tell them what the seals did."
"Only if you still want to once the crowd is watching," Austin Veyron told her.
Arin looked toward the red-marked crates and held her gaze there. "I do," she said.
The sunrise bell rang across the square.
Kharvek appeared on the platform as its last note faded.
He was a broad man in ash-black armor, his silver hair tied back behind his head. A red sample vial hung from a chain at his chest, glowing like a captured sunrise against the dark metal.
"My people," he called out. "The Ember Marches have been abandoned by courts, markets, and distant freeholds. You are hungry because no one strong enough has claimed responsibility for you."
Murmurs moved through the square, spreading from the front rows to the back.
Kharvek gestured broadly toward the ration crates.
"Today, Ember Hold provides," he said. "No merchant debt. No court tax. No empty promises. Take food, and stand under my protection."
The crowd leaned forward as one.
Austin Veyron could feel the hunger sample wake inside the red vial. Its logic spread outward through the smell of the food, the sight of the stacked crates, and the fear written on every hungry face in the square.
RELIEF REQUIRES LOYALTY.
DEVOUR rose inside him in answer.
The sample wanted him to take the whole square into himself and turn all those separate hungers into one controllable force. It was a horrible temptation, and it was horrible precisely because it would be so fast.
Veyra’s voice came low beside him. "Target?"
"Not yet," he said. "We need the terms visible first."
Ceryn climbed onto an overturned water barrel and raised the record sheet high.
"This relief carries a hidden distribution duty!" they called out. "Anyone who accepts it becomes a route for the hunger fever. The food is not free. It turns your need into Kharvek’s weapon."
Ash guards began moving toward them through the crowd.
Kharvek smiled without looking the least bit surprised. "A court clerk and a freehold devourer, telling refugees to reject food," he said. "How convenient."
Vessa held up the Black Mouth Exchange dispute seal. "The source ledger shows the clause," she said. "You can read it before you eat."
Kharvek’s expression tightened, and he waved one hand.
A red projection spread out above the ration crates, displaying a clean, simple message.
EMBER HOLD RELIEF: ONE BOWL FOR EVERY REGISTERED CAMP RESIDENT.
The hidden term did not appear anywhere in it.
"That is the public label," Vessa said. "The private clause is inside the sample."
Arin stepped forward with the convoy guards beside her. "We took his rations in the canyon," she said, loud enough to carry. "The seals made us believe the people around us would steal first. We almost fought each other over food while his raiders stood there watching."
The crowd turned toward her, faces shifting from hope to uncertainty.
Kharvek’s ash guards drew their weapons.
"Silence the liar," the warlord said.
The first guard lunged at her.
Rin’s arrow struck his sword arm before he could close the distance. Veyra intercepted the second guard with a hard block, turning his blade aside without cutting him down. Orena drove her spear into the ash-covered ground, raising a thick cloud that blocked the guards’ sightline long enough for Arin to retreat safely behind the clean-route witnesses.
Then the ration crates opened on their own.
Red mist poured out of them and rolled across the square.
The mood of the crowd changed almost at once.
People began staring at one another’s hands. A man near the front grabbed two bowls at once. A woman pulled a ration bag tight against her chest. The ash guards stopped holding the crowd back and instead began directing people toward the crates, which only made the panic worse.
Nyra lifted the heart shard, and blue-black light cut through the red mist around the people nearest to her.
"The core clause is moving through the relief line," she said. "If it completes, Kharvek will be able to trigger the whole camp later, whenever he likes."
Austin Veyron could see the line moving inside the mist. It did not merely command obedience. It insisted that loyalty was the proof a person deserved to eat at all.
"Target," he said. "Relief-requires-loyalty clause. Not the food, not the camp, not their hunger."
"Witnessed," Veyra said.
"Witnessed," Sable answered.
Austin Veyron stepped into the red mist, and DEVOUR opened.
The clause tasted like hot broth served through a barred gate, close enough to smell but never quite free to reach.
RELIEF REQUIRES LOYALTY.
He consumed the requirement, and nothing more.
The red mist broke apart around him.
For a single second, every ration bowl in the square glowed white.
The crowd went completely still.
Arin picked a bowl up off the ground. Its red seal had turned gray. She handed it to the older man standing beside her.
"Eat," she said. "It is food. Not a pledge."
The older man took it from her with shaking hands.
Others followed his example, slowly at first and then with growing confidence.
Kharvek stared at the fading red projection above the crates. The sample vial at his chest cracked along one side.
"You think you have saved them?" he shouted. "Without discipline, they will tear each other apart by tomorrow."
"No," Austin Veyron said. "Without your fear, they might actually see each other."
Kharvek’s ash guards charged the edge of the platform.
Veyra met them out in the open square. Her blade struck their weapons rather than their bodies, breaking their formation and forcing the soldiers back step by step. Rin’s arrows cut through the banner ropes, and the black-hand flag fell across the ration crates. Sable’s crown shard erased the hidden clauses from the nearest supply labels one after another.
The crowd began forming its own food lines.
No one had ordered them to do it. They simply chose to.
Ceryn read the actual crate counts aloud for everyone to hear. Vessa wrote the numbers on the side of a wagon where anyone could check them. Camp medics took over the water barrels. Arin and the convoy guards stood watch along the edges of the lines, looking for anyone whose fever might be returning.
Kharvek watched his ceremony slipping out of his hands.
He tore the cracked vial from the chain at his chest and ran for the Ember Hold gate.
Austin Veyron went after him, but a wall of ash erupted between them and blocked his path. The warlord reached the fortress entrance and slammed his hand against the gate seal.
Red light surged up through the stone.
"Let them eat their unclaimed bowls," Kharvek called from behind the closing gates. "I have a granary full of food, a thousand soldiers, and the source of every route you need."
The gates slammed shut behind him.
The sample’s red light spread upward through the fortress walls, climbing stone by stone.
Nahlia’s relay token, tucked in Vessa’s pocket, flashed with a sudden message from Grand Meridian.
EMBER HOLD GRANARY MARKED. HE MAY TRIGGER FEVER THROUGH STORED GRAIN. CIVILIANS REPORTED INSIDE.
Veyra looked up at the sealed fortress, her jaw tight.
"A siege," she said.
"Not only a siege," Nyra replied. "A rescue. If the sample reaches the granary, everyone inside becomes part of the route."
Austin Veyron looked back at the camp food lines forming in the ash square behind them. The first ceremony had failed, but he knew the second attack would be much harder to stop.
Kharvek had locked himself behind Ember Hold’s walls with the plague source in his hands.
The sun rose over the fortress, lighting the red glow in its stones.
