The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's
Chapter 165: Caldera Route
Something more was waiting on the other side of the wall.
The hunger furnace sat cold, but Cinder Citadel was anything but silent. The signal stacks were still blowing out white steam, carrying the freed route facts along the Cinder Refuge Chain. Inside the furnace room, the freed ash guards stood around, unsure whether they were prisoners, soldiers, or both. Many of them had taken off their helmets, and some sat against the cooling furnace, staring blankly at nothing.
Halren, the freed quartermaster, walked up onto one of the furnace platforms, holding the clean ledgers in their arms. They had cuts around their wrists from the iron cuffs and dirt in their hair, but they stood tall and waited until everyone in the room was looking at them.
"We need hands on these routes," Halren said. "Water routes, grain routes, and rations by rail. If any of you know a route, tell us. If you don’t want to work for Kharvek, you don’t have to."
No one responded. Halren had just started to lower their head in disappointment when one of the guards Austin Veyron had freed from the furnace armor spoke up.
"I know the route to the southern grain gate," he said, his voice rough, as if he were still getting used to speaking without orders behind it. "There are six wagons waiting outside. Kharvek told us to keep them there until he could get the camps to accept his brand."
Halren looked at the guard for a long moment. "Will you open the gate?"
The guard looked at the furnace, then at the maps hanging on the wall. "I will."
More of the guards began to step forward. A water route keeper. A rail signal runner. Two cooks from the military kitchens, still wearing their dirty aprons. Halren wrote down each name as it was given, the same careful way they had once recorded grain tallies. The citadel wasn’t being freed in one big moment. It was freeing itself, one person at a time, as its people said what they knew and what they refused to do anymore.
Tessa stood next to the map table, looking over the maps they had recovered, her fingers resting on the edges as though she were afraid someone might take them away again.
"You could stay here," Austin Veyron told her. "Halren will need someone who knows Kharvek’s records."
"I know that."
"You don’t owe us the Caldera route."
Tessa looked to the east, where the sealed furnace doors led to the conduit. She didn’t respond right away, and Austin Veyron assumed she was going to stay. "Vordessa’s envoy has a piece of the ember source," she finally said. "I want to know where that route leads."
"Then you’ll come with us," Austin Veyron said. She didn’t smile, but she seemed relieved that he wasn’t going to argue.
After all of the volunteers had given their names, Veyra gathered the team near the eastern shutter. Rin jumped down from one of the pipes, Orena had her spear resting on her shoulder, and Nyra was the last to arrive, the heart shard tucked under her jacket.
"The conduit will be unstable," Nyra warned. "The envoy took a sample of the ember source, and it should leave some kind of trail for Austin Veyron’s Maw trace to follow."
Austin Veyron felt the mark on his wrist pull toward the shutter. "It’s already following it."
Sable’s face grew serious, and she held her crown shard tighter in her hands. "Following a hungry trail can lead you anywhere," she said.
"I understand."
"Do you?" Veyra asked.
Austin Veyron met her eyes. "No. But I’m telling you now."
The team formed a witness circle around the shutter, standing close enough that their shoulders nearly touched. The rest of the freed guards stood in the background, wondering what these people were doing and why it took them so long to do anything. A few of them edged closer to listen.
"We won’t follow a path just because Austin Veyron feels it," Veyra said. "If the trail shows us a route, Tessa will confirm it with the maps. Nyra will confirm it with the shard, and Orena will feel for it in the ground. If two of them say no, we don’t go."
"By choice," Sable said.
"And it can be changed," Tessa added.
"And witnessed," Nyra finished.
"Agreed," Austin Veyron said. He felt steadier knowing he could voice his concerns and that they would be heard, as though saying the rules out loud gave him something solid to stand on.
The eastern shutter began to shake, rattling on its iron tracks.
An ember echo crawled through the cracks at the bottom of the shutter, a thin shape made of furnace fire and route paper. It hissed as it dragged itself toward them on its hands. Three more came behind it, each holding a burning page.
RETURN ROUTES TO THE FURNACE, the first echo whispered.
Halren’s clean ledgers began to glow.
Rin shot an arrow through the first echo, and it burst into ash. But the paper page reformed and kept crawling toward the signal stacks. Orena stomped it flat, but its red letters wriggled away from her.
"They’re trying to take our route facts back!" Halren yelled, clutching the ledgers to their chest.
Austin Veyron knew what was behind the echoes. They weren’t the source. They were the furnace’s last reflex, trying to force every route back into it.
"Target," Austin Veyron said. "The compulsion to return routes to the furnace. Not the route facts. Not the echoes’ raw fire."
"Witnessed," Veyra replied.
"Witnessed," Sable added.
Austin Veyron caught one of the pages with his white root chain, and DEVOUR opened. The command tasted like a door slamming shut on an open road.
RETURN ROUTES TO THE FURNACE.
He devoured return.
The ember echoes began circling each other without any direction. Their pages cooled and fell to the ground as ash. The signal stacks kept blowing steam out toward the refugee routes.
Halren felt the ledgers cool and placed a hand flat on top of them, as if checking that they were still real. "Our records are safe."
The eastern shutter creaked halfway open, groaning as if it had not moved in years.
The conduit beyond it was narrow and cut straight through volcanic rock, its walls smooth and glassy where some ancient heat had melted them. Red light pulsed down the path toward wherever it led. The smell of sulfur and burnt grain hung thick in the air.
Nyra stepped in front of the group and held up her shard. "The envoy traveled this way not long ago. Their sample is pulling the conduit toward the Caldera Throne."
Tessa checked her map case, shielding the pages from the drifting ash. "The furnace maps show three ways out. One leads east toward the crater. One leads south to an abandoned mine, and one goes under Kharvek’s war rooms."
Austin Veyron felt his mark pull toward the eastern tunnel. He held out his arm so everyone could see the direction it was pulling him, and then he stayed quiet and let them check for themselves.
Orena crouched, touched the ground, and studied the boot marks pressed into the ash. "Fresh footprints. Four people heading east."
Nyra felt her shard pull toward the east as well. "My shard agrees."
Tessa studied the map, tracing the path with her finger. "No traps along this route."
Veyra looked at Austin Veyron. "Three checks. They all lead east."
The team made their way down the conduit. It was even hotter than the furnace room. Pipes of magma ran along the walls, and the ground was hot beneath their feet. The path forked many times, with side passages leading off to old supply rooms. Rin took point and stopped at every fork to listen, and Orena walked with one hand on the wall, feeling for cracks in the stone.
There was very little talk on the way down, and somewhere far below them, the mountain rumbled like something turning over in its sleep. The only sounds were their footsteps and the ticking of hot metal. Austin Veyron felt the Maw trace grow stronger the closer they got to the crater, until it felt less like an itch and more like a mouth opening inside his chest.
"I can feel the Maw trace wanting to consume the Caldera source," he told the team.
"Good," Sable replied. "Tell me whenever you feel it." She didn’t say it like an order. She said it like someone holding a rope and reminding him it was there.
Halfway through the conduit, a red quake shook the tunnel. Tessa almost fell, and Orena grabbed her arm to keep her standing. Behind them, part of the tunnel caved in, blocking their way back. Ember lights rose out of the rubble and formed more ash guards. These weren’t human. They were suits of armor filled with commands, and their helmets were empty.
STOP THE UNBOUND, they said in unison.
Veyra drew her sword, the blade catching the red glow. "We don’t have time for a battle."
Rin took out the first ash guard with an arrow to the joints, and its empty armor clattered to the ground. Orena used the fallen rocks as cover, and Nyra turned two of the guards toward the wall with her shard. Tessa ran out of the path of the fire, holding on to her map case, while far behind them, back at the citadel, Halren kept transmitting route facts.
Austin Veyron could see what was holding the ember shells together.
"Target," he said. "The stop-the-unbound clause. Not the command fire itself."
"Witnessed," Veyra replied.
DEVOUR opened, and he consumed stop.
The ember shells stood there, their empty helmets turning toward one another as they tried to figure out who was unbound. Veyra slammed each of them into the wall, and they crumbled into ash.
The team climbed over the ashes and continued on, moving faster now, as if the collapse behind them had pushed them forward. The conduit ended at a broken archway that looked out over the volcanic border.
The Caldera Throne sat before them. It was a massive crater with red fire burning inside it, and the flames rose over the rim in the shape of a crown. Ash storms swirled around the mountain, and roads led to it from every direction, like veins running toward a heart. Wagons and camps were gathered around its base, and hidden supply lines were feeding it.
The eastern envoy’s trail led down to the gate of the crater, a thin scar of red light cutting across the slope.
Nyra stared at the throne, and the heart shard in her hand dimmed as if it were afraid. "That’s not a furnace," she whispered. "It’s bigger than any hunger we’ve ever encountered."
Austin Veyron’s mark was burning hotter than it ever had before, so hot he half expected to see smoke rising from his skin. It wanted to go to the crater, as if it recognized the place and wanted to go home.
Veyra took his hand and held on to it. Her fingers were rough and warm. She wasn’t trying to hold him back. She just wanted him to know she was there.
"We don’t go in hungry," she whispered to him, low enough that only he could hear.
Austin Veyron looked out at the Caldera Throne, where Vordessa’s envoy was waiting for them. His hunger wanted to go, but he could feel her hand in his and his team standing behind him.
"We go in with witnesses," he replied.
