The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's
Chapter 234: Salt Cavern Lift
They started below the dead ravine east of Ash Spine, where the salt caverns were tight and the walls showed old salt and scorch marks from fires long ago, and the recon team followed the covered lamps and the route ember map through them, Austin Veyron, Veyra, Sable, Rin, Tamsin, Nyra, Tessa, Calder, and Seris, while Kethra and Rovan remained at Ash Spine with the rest of the former marchers.
Tessa reported back to West Rift every thirty minutes.
TEAM INTACT. WATER SUPPLY: EIGHT FLASKS. SALT ROUTE STABLE. NO CROWN SCAR CONTACT.
It wasn’t very exciting, but it kept the people behind them from wondering.
Austin Veyron could see the faint line on the map leading to Cinderhold, and he knew the crown scar route would have been quicker, while the salt caverns were cramped and slow, with twist after twist, and though he knew he shouldn’t leave the route they had agreed on, he wanted to, because he wanted to climb up and reach Cinderhold before the ward clock got any closer.
Veyra saw him looking at the map. "Name it."
"The quicker route."
"And what would it make?"
"Someone who breaks a team agreement because he thinks he can beat the consequences."
"Then smaller," Sable said, a dim white glow rising from her crown shard. "Report our delay before we make any other decisions."
Rin dropped back from scouting the next bend long enough to walk beside him, close enough that her tails brushed the back of his legs with every step. "You’ve got your scowl on," she said. "The one that means you’re arguing with a map. The map’s winning, by the way."
"I noticed."
"Good." She flicked his ear with one claw and slipped ahead into the dark again before he could answer.
Seris walked them through another room with courier marks on the walls, some pointing toward the east and others scratched over with crown symbols in black-red. "If the heat seal is still on schedule, we should be two rooms away from the lower ward lift."
Nyra paused near a salt wall with her heart shard pulsing. "There’s crown residue in the ground. The reservoir is heating the ground and the old route lines, and the lift could already be altered."
A noise echoed through the darkness, and salt cave predators came crawling out of crevices in the wall, pale demon creatures with black-red symbols shining through their ribs and claws that left trails in the salt on the ground, one phrase floating above them.
PASSAGE BELONGS TO THE CROWN.
The first creature lunged at Seris, and Rin jumped into it, clawing its shoulder and knocking it away, while Tamsin speared the second one before it could reach Tessa and her relay slate, and Veyra cut through another creature’s marked ribs, though the symbols reappeared around it.
Austin Veyron knew what the mark was claiming, because it wasn’t saying the salt caverns were the crown’s, but controlling the creatures into believing that passage itself belonged to the crown.
"Target," Austin Veyron said. "The passage-belongs-to-the-crown claim. Not the salt caverns, the creatures, or the team."
"Witnessed," Veyra said.
"Witnessed," Sable answered.
Austin Veyron pressed the white root chain to one of the creature’s rib marks.
DEVOUR opened, and the claim tasted like a tunnel you had to squeeze through to reach the other side.
PASSAGE BELONGS TO THE CROWN.
He consumed passage.
The creatures’ marks disappeared, and they stopped attacking, one walking off into a crevice in the wall and the others vanishing deeper into the salt caverns, so that while the cave was still dangerous, they no longer believed everyone who walked through it was trespassing on Maelor’s path.
Rin landed next to Veyra and shook the salt off her claws, and Veyra looked her over quickly and tucked a piece of hair behind Rin’s ear with her good hand, and Rin didn’t say anything snarky for nearly three steps.
The team came across an alcove being used as a refuge by about a dozen people, who were sitting around a small seep of salt water and sharing food out of one cloth bag, while a woman in a miner’s coat stood over them holding a broken lantern.
"My name is Ilsa," she said. "Cinderhold shut off the outer roads yesterday, and we came down here when the wards started to heat the lower roads."
Tessa lowered her relay slate. "Do you want to share what you know about the lift?"
Ilsa looked at the route ember map. "The lower ward lift is ahead, but the heat seal has been altered. It used to let anyone with a courier badge through, and now it requires a living heat signature. The crown has modified it."
"Can you show us to the lift?" Seris asked.
"I’ll show you to the lift if you can show us a way out," Ilsa replied. "Some of us want to make it west before the city is sealed off."
Calder copied the salt route onto a new slate for the refuge group, and Tamsin marked where the salt cave predators were and where the water seep was, and they told the group they couldn’t guarantee the route would still be open when they made it out, but gave them the counts of what they knew, the distance, the water supply, and the unknown amount of crown residue, along with the promise that they would be reporting in every thirty minutes, and Ilsa agreed to help them.
When they reached the lower ward lift, they found the device being used to sabotage it, an old lift with pipes attached that led down into the shaft below, which glowed red with heat, and above the lift hung a heat seal.
LIVING HEAT REQUIRED.
Below that, Austin Veyron’s mark was reflected back at him.
Nyra held her heart shard to the heat seal. "It doesn’t require living heat, it requires a seed reflection. The crown wants Austin Veyron to open this lift and leave a boundary trail behind."
The lift waited for him above the furnace shaft, with Cinderhold above them, and the first gate was asking Austin Veyron to be its key.
He stared at his mark in the heat seal, knowing that opening it would be easy, that he could just put his mark to the seal and give it a trail of DEVOUR, and the lift would open, and he could picture his team reaching Cinderhold before Maelor’s guards got there, but he could also picture the crown learning one more piece of his boundary trail and using it to seal off more routes in the city.
Veyra stood next to him. "Name it."
"Opening it myself."
"And what would it make?"
"The key they made this door for."
"Then smaller," Sable said, holding her broken crown shard near the red letters. "Find the claim that’s making it a key."
Ilsa looked over the old lift wheel. "This lift used to require three heat signatures to open, a courier signal, a maintenance torch, and a salt-water brake, so that no one could open it by themselves. The heat seal has turned the three signatures into one seed mark."
Seris opened the courier tube and found an old badge in its lining. "I can provide the courier signal."
Ilsa looked at the salt-water pipe. "I can open the brake, if the refuge group is willing to spend some of their water."
The refugees behind her heard what it would cost them to open the lift safely, a fourth of their water supply, with no promise of an exit route once they reached the surface, and after talking amongst themselves, they decided to help.
Veyra held the maintenance torch and let the controlled heat of her blade touch the third heat sensor, while Nyra placed her heart shard over all three to keep their trails separate, but the heat seal lit up again.
AUSTIN VEYRON OPENS WHAT THE CROWN CONTROLS.
The crown had turned the three signatures into one claim that only Austin Veyron could answer.
"Target," Austin Veyron said. "The Austin-Veyron-opens-what-the-crown-controls claim. Not the lift, the heat, or the people providing the signatures."
"Witnessed," Veyra said.
"Witnessed," Sable answered.
Austin Veyron placed the white root chain on his reflected mark.
DEVOUR opened, and the claim tasted like a lock that only knew one key.
AUSTIN VEYRON OPENS WHAT THE CROWN CONTROLS.
He consumed opens.
The reflection of his mark broke, and the old lift came to life as Seris provided the courier signal, Ilsa opened the salt-water brake, and Veyra used the controlled heat from her blade to turn the maintenance wheel, each signature separate but the lift accepting them all.
Pipes came shooting out of the shaft walls, trying to grab the lift, and Rin slashed through the closest ones while Tamsin drove her spear through another and pinned it to the wall, and Calder pulled the refuge group behind the lift rail as Nyra widened the boundary around the wheel.
The lift began to rise, and for a moment it looked as though the crown would pull it back down into the shaft, until the salt-water brake let out a cloud of white steam and the black pipes snapped off the lift.
Sable lost her balance as the lift jerked, and Austin Veyron caught her by the waist and held her close, and she didn’t pull away when the lift steadied, but kept her shard raised over both of them while her heart raced against his arm.
The lift carried them up through a long shaft lined with road marks, and below them the refuge group’s water was lower, but their route out was still open, and the lift no longer carried Austin Veyron’s reflected mark.
Tessa sent the next report as they ascended.
LOWER WARD LIFT OPENED THROUGH THREE WITNESSED SIGNATURES. NO SEED TRAIL LEFT BEHIND. TEAM ASCENDING. REFUGE GROUP HAS SALT ROUTE OUT.
A response came back right away, and underneath the West Rift reply was one line he knew hadn’t come from any council.
STILL HOLDING THE WINDOW SIDE.
Cinderhold’s undercity showed through the grate above them, sealed roads and red ward towers with black smoke drifting between the buildings, so that while the crown didn’t have their key, it had shown them how much of the city was already sealed behind it.
