The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's
Chapter 239: Crown-Heart Outer Chamber
There was a way down beneath the reservoir throat, and Seris used the lower-reservoir key set Velis had given her to open three old doors that led further down under Cinderhold, through pipes that still held warmth but no longer carried any of Maelor’s marks, while Ferrin and the engineers who had broken from him kept the separated source valves open and Tova’s lower ward kept sending back heat counts for the food, clinic, and residential areas.
Tessa read out the report.
UPPER WARD STABLE. SHADOW LINKS PRESENT. NO NEW CROWN LABELS VALID. REPORT EVERY FIFTEEN MINUTES.
Fifteen minutes felt like a short leash, and Austin Veyron knew he would want to go faster than it allowed, but the upper ward needed to know whether they had made it down to the crown-heart or not, because if they failed, the people above would have to know.
Veyra saw him thinking about it. "Name it."
"The crown-heart, before the next report."
"And what would it make?"
"Someone who thinks silence is speed because he doesn’t like waiting."
"Then smaller," Sable said, her shard glowing against the pipe wall. "We report each door as we open it."
When they opened the first door, they found a chamber of fire that looked like a mirror, a pool of black-red flame that showed each of them reflected in it, except that when Austin Veyron looked into it, there was no image of him at all, only his DEVOUR mark burning on every stove and brazier in the city above them.
THE HEART KNOWS THE HUNGER THAT ENTERS.
"It isn’t mirroring him, it’s mirroring his hunger," Nyra said, holding the heart shard over the flame. "If it learns his hunger, it will start using it to control the city’s fires."
Austin Veyron knew that if he touched the flame, it would mirror him, and he could devour the mirror and be done with it, but he also knew it would spread his seed through every fire in the city.
Veyra stood in front of him. "Name it."
"The mirror, before it spreads."
"And what would it make?"
"The brand I’m trying to stop."
"Then smaller," Sable said, pointing to the words under the pool of flame, and Austin Veyron realized that the heart didn’t need to know hunger at all, but only claimed the right to record whatever entered its chamber.
"Target," Austin Veyron said. "The heart-knows-the-hunger-that-enters claim. Not the flame, the city, or us."
"Witnessed," Veyra said.
"Witnessed," Sable answered.
He pressed the white root chain to the edge of the mirror flame.
DEVOUR opened, and the claim tasted like a lock learning the hand of the person trying to open it.
THE HEART KNOWS THE HUNGER THAT ENTERS.
He consumed knows.
The flame went dark, and Austin Veyron was no longer reflected in the pool of fire, while the city’s fires stayed their own, and the door to the next chamber opened without recording their heat signatures.
The next chamber was large enough to hold a town square, and in the middle of it hung the crown-heart, a black-red mass of iron and flame with lines of heat wrapped around it in three circles, the first circle fire, the second the crown’s commands, and the third the names and needs of people from all over Cinderhold.
"Fire, command, and need," Nyra said, studying the rings with her heart shard. "It uses all three to feed itself, but keeps them apart, so no one can break one without taking the others."
Maelor stood on the circle of fire with the portable crown flame above his hand, smaller than before but still deadly, with crown guards around him and some of the engineers still wearing the red-and-black bands of control.
"You’ve freed the pipes and the lower ward," Maelor said. "But Cinderhold still needs a heart, like every city does. Someone has to decide where the heat goes when there isn’t enough."
Seris stepped up to him. "A heart can give heat without controlling people."
"Can it?" Maelor asked. "Who decides when the first ward goes cold? The one cooking the food? The one running to the clinic? The one scared there won’t be enough? Or the one willing to take the fall?"
Austin Veyron knew he would want to be that person, to take control of the decision so that no one else had to make it.
Veyra whispered to him. "Name it."
"Making the decision."
"And what would it make?"
"The heart, with a man’s face on it."
"Then smaller," Sable said, lifting her shard toward the heart. "Break the claim that a heart has to have an owner."
The crown guards attacked, and the circle of fire around the heart made mirrors of each of them, one with Austin Veyron’s mark on its chest, another with Veyra’s blade, and the last with Sable’s crown shard.
The mirror of Austin Veyron came for him first, and Seris flew into it, but her soot came back black-red, while Veyra blocked the mirror of herself with her good arm and pushed it away from Tessa, and the mirror of Sable lifted its false crown shard until Sable cut it apart with her real one.
Austin Veyron saw the words in the chest of his mirror.
THE STRONGEST HUNGER OWNS THE HEART.
It was using his fear of not being able to protect the city against him.
"Target," he said. "The strongest-hunger-owns-the-heart claim. Not the heart, the city, or the mirrors."
"Witnessed," Veyra said.
"Witnessed," Sable answered.
He put his root chain on the dark mark in the mirror’s chest.
DEVOUR opened, and the claim tasted like a starving man crowned by everyone because they were scared of the cold.
THE STRONGEST HUNGER OWNS THE HEART.
He consumed crowned.
The mirror of Austin Veyron shattered, and the rest of the mirrors lost their control and fell back into the circle of fire, while the crown-heart shook and a thin black-red line came off of it and went up through the roof of the chamber, and Tessa’s relay went off without her touching it.
CITY FIRE MIRROR PROCESS ACTIVE.
Every fire in the city began to show a small dark mark at its center, because the heart had started learning Austin Veyron and was teaching the city’s fires to mimic him.
Tessa opened the relay, and the voices from above all spoke at once.
"The fires in the food hall keep dimming and flaring whenever people argue about how much they get," Tova said.
"The clinic fires are trying to follow the dark marks," Velis said from the throat. "We can stop it if we keep the wheels manned."
"The residential vents are holding," Ferrin said, "but the dark marks get brighter wherever someone has a private heat contract."
Austin Veyron wanted to shut down every fire in the city, but he knew that would leave the people without heat when they were already running low.
Veyra knew what he was thinking. "Name it."
"Stopping the fires before they learn me."
"And what would it make?"
"Someone who would kill his city’s fires to save his own name."
"Then smaller," Sable said, her shard reflecting the three rings of the heart. "Give the city a pattern that isn’t Austin Veyron."
"The fires can follow rules that aren’t him," Nyra said. "Kitchen fires follow the people who cook, clinic fires follow the people being cared for, and home fires follow the public valve. If the city keeps using different sources of heat, the heart won’t be able to mirror one person."
Tessa sent the rule out to the city.
KEEP HEAT SOURCES APART. USE CREW, CLINIC, AND PUBLIC VALVE COUNTS. NO PRIVATE FIRE CONTRACTS. REPORT ANY DARK MARKS ON FIRES.
The city started following the rule, and some of the dark marks faded, though not all of them.
"Hey, we’ve got one on our clinic brazier," Rin’s voice came in over the relay. "I told it who lit the fire, and it went away. Tell him that works."
"He knows," Veyra said, and she put her good hand on Austin Veyron’s arm and squeezed.
"Good. And you," Rin added, her voice dropping into something warmer that she clearly hadn’t meant the whole relay to hear, "keep that arm down when you swing. I’m not carrying you up all those stairs." Veyra’s ears went red in the firelight, and she didn’t let go of Austin Veyron’s arm, as though holding onto him made it easier to pretend she hadn’t heard.
Elena came in right after Rin. "The Grand Meridian lamps have your mark on them too. I’m standing next to one right now, and I told it that it wasn’t you." She paused. "I know it’s not you."
Austin Veyron reached for the slip he kept over his heart, and on his other side he felt Sable take his hand, her fingers cool against the heat of the chamber, holding on as if she meant to prove Elena right.
Maelor watched them with disgust. "You can’t talk faster than a heart can beat."
"No," Tessa said. "But you can’t control every fire once they know what you’re doing."
The second circle of the crown-heart began spinning faster, and while the city fire mirror was still active, they had bought themselves some time, so that above them the city’s heat counts rose alongside the shadows, and below them Maelor reached for the heart to take the next step.
