The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's
Chapter 28: Claim of the Red Huntress
"Tell me where your sister is."
The lioness-eared warrior stared at Austin through narrowed eyes. Smoke curled over the street behind her, ruined by firefight. Grand Meridian’s armored roots sifted through the broken pavement, dragging corpses and shattered chain gear back toward the hotel like a patient black tide.
"My name is Kaela," she said at last. "My sister is Sarielle, heir to the Beast-Queen line. Malrec keeps her inside a silver heart- cage at the center of his moving war camp. The cage only opens when the lord is present."
Austin nodded once. "Then we cut through the camp or we cut through him."
Rin’s tails flicked behind him.
Everyone turned to look.
The fox demon lingered apart from the others, expression unreadable and eyes narrowed gold. There was silence where the temporary battlefield pact had been between them, quiet enough that Austin could feel the last threads of it ebbing through the bond between them. Like heat leaving a blade after battle ended.
"What?" he asked.
Her smile lacked warmth. "You speak like a lord already."
"Someone has to."
"No." Rin took a step closer, boots crunching broken chain beneath her heels. "Someone wants to."
Kaela’s ears flattened. Elena sucked in a sharp breath. Seven shifted impatiently at Austin’ shoulder. Violence hovered between them before the rest of the group quite realized what form it might take.
Austin knew. He had plenty of time to consider it.
Rin Applessors looked like a predator deciding whether Austin was worth the space he took up.
"The pact is ending," Austin said.
"It has ended." Rin drew one claw down his shredded jacket. "By old huntress custom, I can leave, kneel, or claim."
"And which one are you here for?"
Her smile grew more confident. "Would you still respect me if I knelt first?"
"No."
"Good answer."
She stepped back. Blood dripped from her claws. "Then I claim."
Elena frowned. "Claim what?"
Rin did not break eye contact with Austin. "The right to judge whether the man who freed me should be followed, killed, or left behind."
Kaela muttered something Austin did not recognize. Maelis crossed her arms and watched amusedly. Seven remained where he was like immovable stone waiting to become animate.
Austin rubbed his neck.
"You want to duel."
"I want truth." Rin’ tails fanned behind her in a slow red blur. "The duel is how my kind tests lies."
He looked at the others. "Take the prisoners inside. Lock the outer doors. Everyone stays where you are."
Elena began to protest then decided against it. "If she guts you I swear I am going to lose it."
They returned to Grand Meridian as he and Rin stayed in the street.
Neither of them drew a weapon.
Rin smiled. "You can still use that stupid new command on me." She gestured at Austin’ widened pupils and razor-edged combat instincts. "The bite. The hook. Your ugly little shortcut."
His jaw clenched. "I could."
"But you won’t."
"Why the hell do you think that?"
Her eyes glowed gold for a moment. "Because if you do then you lose."
Command Bite would freeze Rin still. Possibility might even grant him temporary submission if Austin hooked straight to her mind. But everything he won against her would be poisoned from the start. Rin was smarter than that. Too dangerous, too proud and above all too useful to keep under control through stolen obedience. If he wanted her for his faction he would have to offer her what demons hated giving more than blood or weapons.
Choice.
He dropped his hands. "Then let’s get this clean."
Rin vanished.
She appeared with no pause, no advance. One heartbeat she’d been standing in front of him, the next the breeze fractured into nine as her scent divided in every direction at once.
Austin acted on instinct.
Knife claws carved sparks from his shoulder plate before he twisted out of the strike’s path. He slammed a fist into Rin’s gut on her third step, but her tails knocked the blow aside and caught his wrist. She twisted out of his grip before he could react again, sent bones cracking behind him with remote hunting magic. He spun toward her before either of them could attack a second time.
Austin rammed an elbow into her back. It collided with emptiness. The solid Rin twisted around his legs, slicing his calf open. He huffed through bloody teeth, pressed his heel into the pavement and brought his other fist down as hard as he could manage. Asphalt shattered around his fingers.
Roots burst outward from his kickpoint.
Rin leapt to the other side. Straight onto the hood of a burned-out sedan.
"You fight like you live in that fortress." She grinned down at him. "Not a bad way to exist. I approve."
Austin charged the car. It buckled beneath his mass and scrped with a tinny groan. Rin danced across broken glass behind him, tails lashing and every motion predatory. Purposeful. She was smiling now not because the fight amused her but because whatever answer she was seeking had revealed itself at last.
She wanted to know how far Austin could sink into ugliness without immediately professing nobility when it ended.
He showed her.
Rolled through her distractions, punched through illusion without thought and followed only the scent trail his unnatural senses could see. Rin tried to circle behind him halfway through the duel but he whirled as she went past, twisted her by the throat, and slammed her back into a bus stop hard enough to crack the glass enclosure around them.
Heat bloomed across her jaw. His black hunger answered, sudden and powerful, consuming her fear and danger and the thin desperate knowledge she would die if Austin decided to wrench her throat from her neck.
Rin flattened her ears against her head.
Then she smiled directly at him.
"That," she whispered. "That’s the man I was looking for."
She bit down.
No nip of teeth. No intimacy. A huntress bite, hard and punishing until her teeth closed on the side of his hand and Austin’ blood flooded into her mouth.
He growled. Forced her away from him with double his strength.
She caught her footing on instinct. Most hunters did, Rin among them. Used reflexes too ingrained to ignore and smirked after wiping his life against her thumb. Pink eyes black as blood.
"You taste worse than you smell," Rin observed.
He advanced on her once more.
He met her attack this time. Fist against claws. Power against speed. Rin let loose and illusions collapsed around them. Half- truths detonated like bombs while Austin took ribs across the knuckles and returned the favor with enough strength to send Rin skidding across pavement. She rolled immediately back to her feet tails whipping behind her as she moved and Austin realized what Rin had seen. Satisfaction.
Not because she thought she was winning.
But because Austin had finally stopped trying to cage Rin’ instinctual nature and succeeded anyway.
His mouth twisted when another scent sliced cleanly through the duel.
Fear. Kaela sounded genuinely afraid.
Bloodline. Sarielle. Alive. Near him. Unlocked.
And beneath both, coating everything around them --
Oil and metal.
Malrec’ scouts.
Rin smelled them before Austin did.
Just barely.
Her head swiveled to the east alley and he copied her movement. Three figures crunched across rooftops toward them -- lean predators wearing scout leathers over humanoid frames. Each wore a strip of silver cloth, freshly blood- marked.
"Younger-queen scent markers." Rin spat.
The demons had closed enough to confirm that Grand Meridian was truly here. One trip back to the moving war camp would tell Malrec exactly where to strike and who Austin chose to leave behind.
The fight ended neither of them said as much.
Rin acted first, darting up the wall with feline athleticism that was impressive even against broken stone. Austin hit the alleyway floor flat out and roots stabbed through concrete ahead of him. One scout paused to look back, eyes popping as they met the Devourer.
Run.
I want to see how scared you really are.
"You!" The scout shouted. "Kill him!".
Both of them killed. Ren first by claw, Austin when rising roots plucked the second demon from his perch by the hair.
The third sliced her scent- cloth free to escape pursuit but that bought her only seconds before Rin materialized in a shattered pharmacy doorway behind her. Rin held a claw to her eye while Austin pinned her wrist against the wall.
"You tell him where the entrance camps," Austin growled.
The scout spat blood at his boots before coughing again. Rin extracted the information without killing her.
Near.
"Across road," she answered.
Enough information. Austin released her wrist and watched while she bled out across shattered tile. The urge to use Command Bite was strong. It clawed at his mind like he needed something precious returned to him.
Used her. Control her. Keep Rin from running again.
He refrained. Locked eyes with Rin instead.
Rin smirked.
Almost did.
Instead he peeled open DEVOUR and enveloped the bloodmarked cloth between his fingers. Scent poured into him moments later: route of wagons, patrol positions, entrance screening parties. Everything Malrec would expect him to take after liberating Grand Meridian. There was one other thread of scent woven through the cloth --
Another heartbeat.
"Weasel style tracker magic," Rin breathed.
Austin stared at the scout through black eyes. "He marked her location from the inside."
Her eyes glittered. Sharp. Calculated. Rin’ satisfaction drained away until she appeared untouched by triumph at all.
Malrec had placed the tracker directly on Sarielle’ heart, Rin explained. Free her without destroying it and Malrec could hunt them anywhere across Crown City.
Austin closed DEVOUR and left the scout to bleed out in peace.
Her decision to follow him would need to be because she agreed with his next move.
"If you choose," he said slowly, "we attack Malrec’ main war camp first."
The System thrummed alive between them.
Expectations. Intent. Past. And the unmistakable roar of hunting magic as Rin accepted the offer with every shred of calculated focus at her command.
"Yes."
