The Scumbags Guide to Enslaving Demon's

Chapter 84: Controlled Severance

  • Next Chapter

Vharra didn’t flinch as the counterclaim appeared.

She broke the throne.

Angered roots burst from the black glass throne platform, flinging away the freed wardens and tearing through the ceiling of the throne room itself. The palace flinched at her wrath. Chains fell from above. Every loyalist in the upper court got the same command at once.

’DEFEND THE QUEEN. BREAK THE WITNESS.’

The first wave smashed through the shattered doors.

Veyra guarded the left side of the throne dais. Rin and the freed wardens took up position on its right side. Sarielle slashed silver fire across the floor, funneling the root creatures through the burning gauntlet or forcing them to dodge the white severance trail Nahlia had painted across the throne chamber.

Austin Veyron himself stood in the middle of that severance line, holding the copied ledger pages tightly in his grip.

Controlled severance magic hummed beneath his boots.

’QUEEN. OATH WELL. WITNESS WHO REFUSES THE CROWN.’

The oath well was many levels below them now. The throne chamber was cracking apart. The severance line between the two of them had to be maintained long enough to drag Vharra back down to the oath well’s source.

Calder stepped up next to Austin Veyron.

"We can use both seeds to pull her," he said.

Austin Veyron knew why that was a terrible idea. Two Devour seeds feeding off the Queen’s red- gold network would rip her through every active claim in the palace until they found the source of her magic. Victory could be swift.

But so could they merging their hungers into the sovereign core she hungered for.

"No forced merge," Austin Veyron said.

Calder nodded. "No merge."

Vharra heard them moving and laughed. "You boys keep trying hard like you think it makes you better."

"It keeps us human," Austin Veyron replied.

The Queen lifted her hands. The chain link interfaces in Calder’s ear-old collar and Austin Veyron’s wrist flared simultaneously, sending a pulse surging between them that attempted to fuse the two seeds into a single reservoir of power.

[DUAL CANDIDATES DETECTED.]

[SOVEREIGN CONVERGENCE INITIATED.]

Calder screamed, dropping to one knee. Austin Veyron felt his memories drag violently toward Calder’s: prison-dark corridors, a chain crown around his neck, bodies with blank eyes begging him to let them out. All at once, Calder glimpsed Austin Veyron’s memories in return: the Grand Meridian lobby, the demon larder, every moment hunger made violence feel easy.

They could escape together. Share pain. Share power. Divide one responsibility between them.

Elena grabbed hold of Austin Veyron’s shoulder.

"Tell him what you choose," she said.

Austin Veyron met Calder’s eyes through red-gold static.

"I choose not to claim you," he said.

Calder twisted his face. "I choose not to let you claim me."

The forced merge dissolved.

Its backlash slammed Vharra backwards into the throne stump.

Nahlia seized the moment. She shoved the copied ledger pages into the severance line. "She won’t sever active claims herself. We have witnesses that verify the debt. Let’s get some witness that want to see change."

The freed wardens stepped forward one at a time. The young warden who had served under Vharra’s collar spoke first. Then the former price enforcer who monitored the auction route. Then court scribes who described secret ledgers, then Maelis speaking for the prisoners chained to collars in the inner court.

Every testimony took physical form as a white glyph projected along the severance line.

Vharra’s aura of authority splintered apart.

The Queen strode forward to confront them herself.

She hacked free a root spear from the throne platform and swung it at Nahlia. Austin Veyron deflected it, but the spear’s tip pierced his shoulder and pinned him to the ground.

His seed screamed at him to devour the Queen.

’CONSUME SOVEREIGN SOURCE.’

One bite. One choice.

He could kill her right where she stood.

And condemn every active claim she oversaw, every precarious severance route those claims traveled along, and every citizen who’d had their debts collected on her chain.

Austin Veyron remained perfectly still.

Veyra sliced through the spear’s shaft. Rin yanked Nahlia behind cover. Calder moved to flank Vharra from behind, not to consume her power but sever away the crown of chain-light above her head.

The Queen swatted him aside. Reached around Calder and grabbed him by the throat instead.

"You were mine first," she said.

Calder glanced back at Austin Veyron.

Austin Veyron gave him no order to keep fighting. No instruction on what he would have to sacrifice himself to become.

Calder forced a smile through the throbbing pain in his neck.

"I was never yours."

Calder forced his fingers into the Queen’s chain crown and snapped it’s central link in two.

The throne chamber exploded.

The red-gold claim network bent around them. Severance glyphs spread across Vharra’s arms, throat, and face. Witnessing herself fail through the severance routes she clung to so tightly terrified the Queen.

For just a moment.

Then the severance line to the Oath Well materialized beneath her feet.

Austin Veyron yanked the spear shard free from his shoulder and approached her slowly.

"Come with me to the well," he said.

Vharra’s gaze settled on the Devour seed dangling from Austin Veyron’s wrist.

"You still don’t understand. There’s one last option," she hissed.

Nothing moved inside the palace around them anymore. Destroy me, and every active claim tethered to my authority will fail. Thousands of people will be trapped between severance routes with nowhere left to go. Claim my network instead and you can save them all.

Take my power and become the monster you claim to hate.

The controlled severance condition thrummed in his hands.

Austin Veyron had finally arrived at the moment Vharra had tried to push him toward the second he first plotted against her. Every severance line tying magic to reality stretched across his field of vision like arteries waiting to be severed.

He watched prisoners unloaded into transit cells beneath hidden elevators in palace foundations. He saw wardens forced to drag captives along escape routes that only connected to black market supply lines. He saw forgotten court servants locked away behind enchanted ledger doors who wouldn’t even understand what was happening if every active claim tore apart without warning.

Vharra was right about one thing. He could eat her and condemn thousands of people to a life worse than imprisonment.

What’s more, he’d condemn them without empowering anyone else to fix her legacy.

The seed offered its convenient solution once more.

’ASSUME NETWORK MAINTENANCE.’

’PREVENT ALL ROUTES FROM FAILING.’

Austin Veyron looked out at every person who’d managed to break free just to watch this moment unfold. Every face he saw was dirtied with sweat, blood, and fear. Not one of them were giving him any orders. Certainly none of them were telling him to save them by swallowing his principles.

Nahlia spoke first. "Section fourteen of the original ledger lists a third option. It doesn’t say that magic demands a queen. It says that responsibility falls upon the individual who refuses to break her chains."

Vharra’s face contorted. "You," Elena said slowly.

The Queen staggered backwards. "No. Taking that oath was never meant to cage me like this."

"It’s meant to hold you responsible for your decisions," Maelis finished.

Brightness bloomed underneath Vharra’s boots. The white severance glyphs created from every witness statement Nahlia had gathered rose from the ground and reformed into chains of their own. Rather than restrain prisoners, though, the severance lines latched directly onto the Queen’s red-gold claim network.

Calder moved to stand next to Austin Veyron.

"We can maintain route stability without claiming authority over them. Let the freed scribes seal their own ledgers. Let the wardens protect their own refuge routes. Grand Meridian showed years ago that the entire system could’ve handled mass voluntary renouncements."

Tessa flipped open the transfer ledger. "We create a temporary common ledger instead. Governed by no single user. Every route enforced by it must be supported by the people who travel it."

Slower. Dirtier. There would be gaps they couldn’t fill.

But it also meant they didn’t have to crown anyone else Vharra if they didn’t want to.

Austin Veyron rose from where he knelt and met the gaze of every freed warden, scribe, and captive who had filled the throne chamber to watch this moment unfold.

"This is going to hurt," he said. "Things are going to break before we can fix them. If that’s not a sacrifice you’re willing to make, then leave." He paused, letting the weight of his next words sink in for every offender hidden in the throne room’s shadows. "If you’re willing to help us, step forward."

The response shook the room around them. Not as a chant, but as thousands of tiny whispers overlapping and amplifying each other.

"We choose to help."

The temporary common ledger opened between them.

White lines of severance magic flooded into the throne room, connecting every volunteer to the severance routes they pledged to stabilize. One team of scribes volunteered to manage archive cell permissions. Another collection of former wardens volunteered to police evacuation routes. Maelis and Sarielle volunteered to police the inner-court firewalls. Nahlia set about issuing legal renouncements. Far away, throughout the Freehold Throne itself, Grand Meridian allocated voluntary signatures to help moderate the effort.

The red-gold network supporting Vharra’s body started to ripple and warp.

The Queen screamed. Every responsibility she’d ever cast off crashed back into her hands all at once.

Austin Veyron didn’t consume her. Didn’t take her authority for himself.

Instead he opened the controlled severance line leading back to the oath well.

"Walk," he commanded. "Meet what you swore to protect."

For the first time since she’d claimed her seat upon the throne, Vharra had no orders left to issue.

But the court refused to carry her any longer, so she simply stepped forward onto the white path anyways.
