Chapter 131: Chapter 131: The Unexpected Truth

Seeing his son’s dumbfounded expression, Ye Zheng smiled. "What? You don’t believe me?"

’Could this be the reason for the resentful, disappointed look in his eyes when he left home back then?’

"I don’t believe you." Ye Feng shook his head, his eyes full of doubt.

Ye Zheng asked, "When you ran away from home, was it because you suspected that your Aunt Wang and I were already together?"

"Yeah!" Ye Feng nodded. "You wouldn’t admit it at the time, but I clearly saw that she was pregnant."

Ye Zheng didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. "Why didn’t you ask me?"

"Well, you never told me!" Ye Feng retorted, feeling completely justified. He couldn’t help but talk back, since this was his own father, after all.

Ye Zheng finally understood. "Your Aunt Wang was indeed pregnant, but the child wasn’t mine. It was her boyfriend’s. He was a social climber who abandoned her and married someone else."

"She didn’t know she was pregnant at first. Her uncle was the one who carried me off the battlefield. When she came to me for help, I agreed."

"After your mother passed away, we got married quickly so the child wouldn’t be subjected to gossip. I just never expected you to get so angry over it. Ye Ling isn’t your biological brother, but Ye Chen is. He’s your half-brother, at least."

Ye Feng had photos of Ye Ling and Ye Chen. Ye Chen looked like him when he was young, but Ye Ling really didn’t.

"You’re not lying to me?" Ye Feng was still half-convinced.

Ye Zheng gave a bitter smile. "I’m not so despicable as to disown my own child. I have type A blood, and so does your Aunt Wang. Our biological son, Ye Chen, also has type A blood. Ye Ling has type AB."

"You can’t fake something like that. You have to believe me now, right?"

Ye Feng understood blood types. He blinked, his lips moved a few times. "I... I’m sorry! Dad!"

Ye Feng let out a sigh of relief. He hadn’t expected it to be such a small misunderstanding, and he was glad it was finally cleared up. "I was in the wrong, too!"

Ye Feng looked embarrassed, his gaze drifting about, clearly at a loss.

Just then, Han Xiaorui arrived. She had brought crucian carp soup for Ye Feng, along with soft, well-cooked rice, a small portion of sweet and sour pork ribs, shredded pork with celery, and a side of stir-fried green vegetables.

"Ye Feng, you should eat first." Han Xiaorui said as she entered. Seeing that Ye Feng and Ye Zheng were no longer at each other’s throats, she breathed a sigh of relief.

She placed the food on the table, and Ye Feng sat up properly. "Thank you for your trouble."

Han Xiaorui chuckled and poured the soup from a thermos. "What trouble? I just bought it from a restaurant. I saw you liked the sweet and sour pork ribs last time, so I got you a little extra today."

Ye Zheng just sat in his chair, watching Han Xiaorui take care of Ye Feng as he ate.

He observed them closely. ’Han Xiaorui is a very considerate person.’

’She knows Ye Feng’s favorite food is sweet and sour pork ribs.’

"Eat more vegetables!" Han Xiaorui reminded him when she saw him only eating the meat. ’Such a grown man, and still a picky eater.’

When you’re recovering from an illness, you spend most of your time lying down. If you don’t eat vegetables, it’s easy to get constipated.

Ye Feng gave an awkward laugh, picked up some vegetables and took two bites, then went right back to the pork ribs.

"Have some soup!" Han Xiaorui prompted. Ye Feng liked to drink his soup after finishing his meal.

Normally, that would be fine, but now that he was in the hospital, it was better to have the soup while eating his food.

Ye Zheng felt a complicated mix of emotions.

’My stubborn brat of a son... When he talks to me, his mouth is full of thorns, not teeth.’

’But when he talks to his girlfriend, he’s like an obedient puppy.’

’If Ye Feng weren’t injured and in the hospital, I’d be taking off my belt right about now.’

After Ye Feng finished eating and rinsed his mouth, Han Xiaorui cleaned up. "Ye Feng, you get some rest. I’m going to take Uncle Ye to get something to eat."

"Thank you for your trouble." Ye Feng said gratefully. He wanted to offer to pay her back later, but felt that would make them seem like strangers.

"It’s no trouble at all." Han Xiaorui said with an infectious smile. She was enjoying her current life, genuinely loving this peaceful and warm existence from the bottom of her heart.

’No killing, no mutations, no food that could poison you at any moment.’

’Everything is so wonderful!’

Just as Han Xiaorui was about to turn, she heard Ye Feng say from behind her, "Dad, don’t you bully Xiao Rui!"

Ye Zheng instinctively touched the belt at his waist, his eyes narrowing slightly. "Nonsense. I’m so benevolent. Why would I bully Xiao Rui?"

Han Xiaorui smiled. "Exactly, Ye Feng, don’t worry. I, Han Xiaorui, am no pushover. Not just anyone can bully me!"

Her words made Ye Zheng pause for a moment. ’That’s some backbone!’

At that exact moment, Xu Yingying and Old Madam Xu came to visit Ye Feng, catching Ye Zheng right at the doorway.

"Ma, I was just on my way to visit you! How has your health been lately?" In front of Old Madam Xu, Ye Zheng’s attitude was reverent, a complete change from the stern authority he showed his son.

Old Madam Xu just snorted, giving Ye Zheng a cold glare. "My daughter is gone. I am not worthy of you calling me that."

Ye Zheng lowered his eyes humbly, his heart filled with guilt. "I’m sorry, Ma. I failed to protect Lulu. The one thing I regret in my entire life is not convincing Lulu to go abroad with you all back then. Perhaps if she’d gone overseas, with better medical care, Lulu wouldn’t have died."

At the thought of her daughter, Old Madam Xu’s eyes couldn’t help but redden. The saddest thing in life is for the white-haired to bury the black-haired.

Ye Zheng bowed deeply to Old Madam Xu. "I’m sorry. It was my fault."

Old Madam Xu was sobbing uncontrollably.

Their shared memory of the same person had given rise to mutual resentment.

Han Xiaorui thought that Ye Feng’s mother must have been a very wonderful woman.

’To be missed by her family, longed for by her husband, and remembered by her son!’

Xu Yingying wiped her mother’s tears. "Ye Feng, your grandma is very emotional right now. I’ll take her home first and we’ll come see you again."

Ye Feng sat up. "Auntie, please take good care of Grandma."

"Mm, don’t worry." Xu Yingying agreed. As she helped her mother up, she looked over at Ye Zheng with a complex expression. "My mom doesn’t hate you. She just misses my sister too much."

Ye Zheng nodded, a reminiscent look in his eyes. "I know. It’s all my fault."

"All we can say is that life is unpredictable." Xu Yingying choked up. "Ye Feng said that my sister didn’t hate you before she passed. So we have no right to hate you either. Ye Feng is the most precious thing my sister left in this world. You have to treat him well."

"I will," Ye Zheng promised. Ye Feng resembled him, but he also resembled his late wife.

But Old Madam Xu’s emotions were too turbulent, and she fainted.

"Mom... Mom..." Xu Yingying cried out in panic.

Han Xiaorui stepped forward, swept Old Madam Xu up in a princess carry, and placed her on the other hospital bed next to Ye Feng’s.

Ye Zheng’s tense state was shattered by the sight of Han Xiaorui’s display of strength.

’This girl is a real tigress!’

Ye Feng was also very worried. "Grandma..."

A doctor hurried over and, after an examination, said, "This elderly lady is emotionally distraught. You mustn’t agitate her further."

Ye Zheng was overcome with grief. Thinking of his prematurely deceased wife, he knelt on the floor to atone before the old madam. "Mother-in-law, I am sorry."

After kowtowing, Ye Zheng stood up and walked out of the hospital room.

He was worried that if he stayed in the room, he would continue to agitate his mother-in-law.

Han Xiaorui looked at the Xu mother and daughter, then at Ye Zheng, and finally, her gaze landed on Ye Feng.

’The situation is a bit complicated. I should probably just keep my mouth shut!’

Outside, Ye Zheng beckoned to Han Xiaorui. "Come here!"

Han Xiaorui pointed to herself, and when she saw Ye Zheng nod, she walked out. "Uncle Ye, did you need me for something?"
