Chapter 230: Chapter 230: Won Over by Character, and Wanting to Acknowledge a Godmother

Upon hearing Granny Cai’s words, Chen Wenxuan’s anxiety melted away.

Sister Cai had taught him since he was a child to be a person of integrity, to be self-reliant and strong.

It was wonderful to have parents, but one couldn’t rely on them for everything.

Han Xiaorui observed Chen Wenxuan closely. Seeing the immediate change in him, she formed an excellent first impression.

Granny Cai’s open-minded nature and upright heart had clearly had a great influence on Chen Wenxuan.

’I’ll have to observe him carefully,’ she thought. ’If Chen Wenxuan is really as good as he seems, I wouldn’t mind having a brother-in-law like him.’

’Chen Wenxuan is so handsome. To be honest, he’s fairer-skinned than Ye Feng, and has such a gentle, scholarly air about him.’

’Xiao Jing is gorgeous. If they became a couple, can you imagine how beautiful their children would be?’

Han Xiaorui smiled to herself, ’I’m getting a little ahead of myself.’

From Chen Wenxuan’s features, Mr. Xu and Old Madam Xu could tell that he did indeed resemble Mrs. Chen and her husband.

Besides, they had Granny Cai as a witness, and the story of Chen Wenxuan’s upbringing provided a complete, unbroken timeline.

"Wenxuan, don’t you worry," said Old Madam Xu. "Your mother has never stopped thinking about you. If she knew you were still alive, she would have no more regrets in this life. Ye Feng, hurry and take some pictures of Wenxuan."

"It was only because I happened to run into Little Sister Cai today that any of this was possible. I didn’t bring any photos of your mother, but when I get back, I’ll have Ye Feng deliver pictures of your parents and siblings to you."

Chen Wenxuan smiled warmly. "Thank you."

Ye Feng borrowed Han Xiaorui’s camera and took a lot of pictures.

Ye Feng had the photos rush-developed and got them back that very evening. He also delivered a set of pictures to Chen Wenxuan.

Chen Wenxuan was still in a daze. When his roommates pressed him for details, he finally told them that he might have found his family and wasn’t an orphan after all.

Hearing this, his roommates were all happy for him.

Wang Hao smiled. "Wenxuan, Principal Wang personally met with the people who came looking for you. It’s obvious your family isn’t ordinary."

"Don’t forget us when you hit the big time. Once you’ve really found your family, we have to celebrate."

Chen Wenxuan thought for a moment and nodded. "Alright, but not right now."

Although Old Madam Xu had left him one thousand yuan, Chen Wenxuan had no intention of spending it.

He would wait until the dust settled.

"Chen Wenxuan, someone’s downstairs looking for you," a classmate called out.

"Thanks," Chen Wenxuan said, hurrying downstairs.

Ye Feng smiled. "Wenxuan, here are some photos of your family. My grandmother asked me to deliver them to you."

Chen Wenxuan accepted them gratefully. "Brother Ye, please thank Aunt Xu for me."

"Will do!" Ye Feng didn’t bother pointing out that, based on their family hierarchy, he should actually be calling Chen Wenxuan ’Uncle.’

’He’d just let things be and allow Wenxuan to keep calling him ’Brother Ye’.’

Chen Wenxuan held a small photo album filled with pictures Old Madam Xu had organized.

"If you run into any trouble at school, give me a call." Ye Feng handed him a business card.

Chen Wenxuan took it. "Thank you, Brother Ye. It’s actually fine at school. Everyone’s busy with their studies, and we all get along pretty well."

After the excitement of the afternoon, Chen Wenxuan was now able to face the situation calmly.

The next day, Ye Feng got the photos and mailed them to Germany, along with a letter from Old Madam Xu.

Ye Feng reported the matter to his superiors.

The subsequent investigation into Chen Wenxuan’s family in Germany yielded a major discovery.

They were not only important members of the local Chinese Business Association but also one of the region’s major manufacturers of precision instruments.

The Chen family had originally been reluctant to invest in the Mainland, their biggest reservation being the heartache and resentment they harbored over the death of their infant son.

Now that their youngest son was alive, that major obstacle could be overcome.

When Han Xiaorui got home, she told her sister about the meeting that afternoon, marveling at how small the world was.

Han Xiaoqing smiled. "Sister Cai is a good person."

"She is!" Han Xiaorui said with a laugh. "To this day, Sister Cai has kept the money Mrs. Chen gave her all those years ago to bury her premature son and pay for annual respects. It’s a full two ’Big Yellow Fish’."

Han Xiaoqing was shocked. "Two ’Big Yellow Fish’ gold bars? How much do they weigh?"

"A total of 625 grams," Han Xiaorui answered. "And from what I heard from Chen Wenxuan this afternoon, Sister Cai talking about buying a house for him wasn’t just a sudden idea; she’s mentioned it before. It’s obvious Sister Cai never had any intention of pocketing that money."

Han Xiaoqing also sighed in admiration. "Sister Cai’s integrity is truly admirable."

Han Xiaorui thought for a moment, then blinked. "What would you think if I asked Sister Cai to be my godmother?"

"A godmother?" Han Xiaoqing blinked, startled for a second. "Sis, are you serious?"

Han Xiaorui nodded. "Of course I am. We’ve never been fortunate with parents, and we’ll never forgive our biological parents back home in this lifetime."

"But we’re still young, and it would be good to have an elder figure in our lives for certain things. Like when we get married, it would be nice to have someone looking out for us."

"Most importantly, during the time we’ve spent with Sister Cai, haven’t we been happy? Haven’t we gotten along well?"

Han Xiaoqing thought it over carefully and then nodded. "We have been happy, and we do get along. Sister Cai cares about us a lot, and she even stands up for us in the village."

"She’s also wonderful to Pingping and An’an. The last time someone in the village was spreading gossip, Sister Cai confronted them and didn’t let up until the person apologized and promised never to do it again."

Han Xiaorui smiled. "There’s no rush to decide. Let’s get some sleep. I’m taking you to the university tomorrow. You have everything packed, right?"

Han Xiaoqing nodded with a smile. "Everything’s ready. Expert Wang has already arranged everything for me at the university."

The next day, Han Xiaorui and Han Xiaoqing took Pingping and An’an to the kindergarten next door to Granny Cai’s house.

Although the kindergarten hadn’t officially started its term, it was registration day for the village children.

There were two teachers and one teaching assistant for daily activities.

Granny Cai worked part-time as the cook, preparing meals and snacks for the children.

"Sister-in-law Xiao Yu, it’s crowded and a bit chaotic at the kindergarten today. Could you help keep an eye on the children?"

Liang Xiaoyu agreed. "Go take Xiao Jing to the university, don’t worry. Leave the kids with me. I promise I’ll take good care of them."

Han Xiaorui trusted Liang Xiaoyu and Sister Cai to help look after her two children.

Han Xiaoqing watched with a hint of longing as Pingping and An’an played happily on the slide.

Having looked after the children for the past few months, Han Xiaoqing had grown deeply attached to them.

The two little rascals, however, were too busy having fun with all their new friends to even notice their aunt leaving.

They had a lot of luggage—three large bags and a suitcase—so they rented Song Sixth’s van to take them to Shencheng’s famous normal university.

At the entrance, there were welcome booths set up for each academic department to greet new students.

Song Sixth parked the van and offered to help Han Xiaorui and Han Xiaoqing carry the luggage, but Han Xiaorui declined.

They had brought a small luggage cart from home, so they loaded the three bags and the suitcase onto it and simply pushed it along.

Han Xiaorui was wearing a knee-length, white embroidered dress with her favorite pair of white sneakers.

Han Xiaoqing had refused the dress her sister had picked out for her, opting instead for a white T-shirt and loose, straight-leg blue jeans.

She also wore white sneakers, completing her fresh, clean look.

Han Xiaoqing’s long, un-permed hair was tied back in a high ponytail, radiating youthful energy.

The moment they stepped onto campus, they became the center of attention.
