The information he received was more or less what Han Xiaoqing had said: the authorities back there had already dispatched people to find Liu Yunyun.

As a result, Officer Liu immediately detained the entire Han Family.

Han Dayong was shocked. "You can’t do this! We just came to file a report, not to turn ourselves in. Why are you arresting us? Besides, we haven’t broken any laws. In this day and age, are you really going to frame innocent people?"

Seeing this, Officer Liu knew that if Han Dayong actually killed himself here, it would indeed be a huge problem. He patiently explained, "Liu Yunyun’s parents filed a police report, saying you abducted her."

Officer Liu was taken aback. "Are you certain you didn’t abduct Liu Yunyun?"

"If you don’t believe us, go ask Liu Yunyun. That’s right, she has the marriage certificate on her." Han Dayong was smug. ’It was a brilliant move to have my son marry Liu Yunyun back then.’

Dubious, Officer Liu went to the next room to question Liu Yunyun and, sure enough, saw the marriage certificate. "Liu Yunyun, are you sure you weren’t abducted? Don’t worry, you’re at a police station. The Han Family can’t harm you here. By the way, officers from your hometown are already on their way to take you back."

Liu Yunyun’s face fell when she heard this. She quickly handed the marriage certificate to Officer Liu. "Officer Liu, hello. I wasn’t forced. I married Han Xiaoyuan of my own free will, and I came with them to Shencheng to find a job voluntarily."

"As for my parents, they favor boys over girls. I’m almost twenty-two, but my parents haven’t even tried to arrange a marriage for me. They don’t want me to get married; they just want me to be a live-in nanny and help them raise my five brothers. I didn’t want that life, so I married Han Xiaoyuan out of my own choice. Nobody forced me."

Officer Liu examined the marriage certificate closely, then called the Civil Affairs Bureau in their hometown where the certificate had been issued.

After a quick investigation, the bureau confirmed that Liu Yunyun and Han Xiaoyuan had indeed gotten married there voluntarily half a month prior.

Combined with Liu Yunyun’s testimony, Officer Liu was almost certain that Han Dayong was telling the truth and no crime had been committed.

However, to avoid having his colleagues travel all this way for nothing, Officer Liu didn’t release them just yet.

After hearing Officer Liu’s explanation, Han Dayong stopped causing a fuss. They had nowhere else to go, anyway. Staying in the station’s holding cell was better than sleeping on the streets.

So the family spent the night in the holding cell.

The officers from their hometown arrived at noon the next day. They confirmed the situation with Liu Yunyun in person, and she had the marriage certificate to prove it.

This proved it wasn’t an abduction; Liu Yunyun had come of her own free will.

They had come to visit relatives, as their two daughters were in Shencheng.

One was attending university, and the other had married a local man. With that, Officer Liu had no choice but to release them.

As for Han Dayong’s missing person report to find Han Xiaorui, Officer Liu took down the details and told them to wait for updates.

After learning about the Han Family’s behavior, Officer Liu understood why Han Xiaorui and Han Xiaoqing wanted nothing to do with their birth parents.

He couldn’t make an executive decision on the matter; at the very least, he had to report it to his superiors.

The two officers who had traveled all that way confirmed multiple times that Liu Yunyun was not abducted and had come willingly. In the end, they could only ask her to write a letter for them to take back to her parents, which would officially close the case.

Just as Han Dayong’s family walked out of the police station, Ye Feng arrived with some men to meet them.

Han Dayong recognized Ye Feng. "You’re our Xiao Rui’s boyfriend, aren’t you?"

Ye Feng nodded. "That’s right. We’re married now, and very happy."

"Married?" Han Dayong’s voice shot up. "Who gave you permission to get married? Did you pay a bride price? I don’t acknowledge this marriage!"

Ye Feng pointed at Liu Yunyun. "We live in a modern society with freedom of love and freedom of marriage. That rule applies to your son, so why wouldn’t it apply to us?"

"Don’t give me that nonsense. Our marriage has nothing to do with you! And given your past actions, you have no right to boss me, Xiao Rui, or Xiao Jing around."

Han Xiaoyuan pointed at Ye Feng. "You married my sister, so you’re my brother-in-law. Our family is in trouble now, so you should be the one to handle it. You should support and respect my parents."

Ye Feng gestured toward Liu Yunyun again. "If that’s your logic, then I’ll send someone to bring Liu Yunyun’s parents and her five little brothers over. You can all be one big, happy family. Imagine how lively that would be."

Those words hit Han Xiaoyuan right where it hurt, leaving him speechless.

Wang Cuilan started crying and wiping her eyes. "What did I ever do to deserve this? Both of my daughters are so unfilial!"

Ye Feng couldn’t help but roll his eyes at that. "What have you done? Do you need me to refresh your memory? You’re lucky Xiao Rui and Xiao Jing are good-hearted. Anyone more ruthless would have tied you up and thrown you into the ocean to feed the fish."

Hearing this, the whole family took two frightened steps back.

Han Dayong forced himself to remain calm. "Who are you trying to scare? There are still laws in this country! Murder is a capital crime!"

Wang Cuilan nodded frantically. "We’ve already made a huge scene. If we end up dead, you won’t get off easy!"

Han Dayong nodded. "That’s right! Just give us money and get us settled, and we won’t bother you."

"We can’t go back home now. If you don’t give us money or help out, we’ll just keep filing police reports here every single day. There are plenty of stations in this city. We’ll go to them one by one. Someone is bound to do something eventually."

Wang Cuilan chimed in, nodding, "Exactly! And Xiao Jing is a student at the teachers’ college. The monk can run, but the temple can’t hide.
