Chapter 380: Chapter 380: Douyu’s New Breed

Zhao Jing hurried over during her meal break.

"Boss Xiao Han, we did it! We succeeded!" Zhao Jing was all smiles, rushing to share the good news with Han Xiaorui.

Han Xiaorui paused, then asked with a smile, "Which ornamental fish did we successfully breed?"

Zhao Jing said, full of excitement, "The Douyu from Thailand! Their body shape wasn’t that great originally, but after our modifications, the Douyu’s colors are much more beautiful and varied. We have bright red, green, blue, black, magenta, cream, and multicolored varieties."

(Thai Douyu, Lion King, pictured above)

(Halfmoon Douyu)

"The Halfmoon Douyu are especially stunning. Their rear fins and tails are large and beautiful, just like satin. When they swim, they look like fairies dancing gracefully."

Hearing this, Han Xiaorui’s interest was piqued. The bad mood brought on by her birth parents vanished.

"Let’s go, I’ll take a look," Han Xiaorui said with a smile. With the kids at school and Ye Feng at work, she was home alone and quite bored, with nothing to do but read.

She followed Zhao Jing to the ornamental fish farm, where the Douyu cross-breeding and enhancement project had been a remarkable success.

In the water, the Douyu’s large tails flowed like the finest silk, vibrant and elegant.

Han Xiaorui was very pleased. "These fish aren’t naturally large, but if we could get them a bit bigger, say ten to fifteen centimeters, their tails would be even more flowing and beautiful. We could develop them into a line of medium-sized ornamental fish."

Zhao Jing nodded repeatedly and smiled. "Boss Xiao Han, we just discussed that in a meeting. Small fish are nice, but they don’t sell for much. Medium-sized ornamental fish are more impressive and can command a higher price."

Han Xiaorui smiled. "Exactly. I’ll discuss it with Brother Jianguo. Based on the varieties and aesthetic quality your team has developed, we’ll give you a generous bonus."

"As long as you’re willing to dig deep and do the research, it’s all permitted—provided there’s no malicious waste. When you get results, they’ll be recorded. You’ll get bonuses and commissions."

Zhao Jing was thrilled. "Boss Xiao Han, don’t worry, we’ll keep working hard."

The bonus was a one-time payment, but the commission was continuous.

For every one of these Douyus sold, they would earn a commission. That’s why the three research teams at the farm were all fired up and diving into their work.

The success in breeding the Douyu gave Zhao Jing and her colleagues even more hope.

While some of the older, established varieties were always popular, a breeding facility couldn’t just rely on them. They needed new varieties to increase their competitiveness.

These Douyus were set to become the next major branch of ornamental fish for the company, following the Butterfly Tail Goldfish.

For ornamental fish, what mattered was being beautiful and easy to raise.

That same day, the First Research Team, led by Zhao Jing, received their research and development bonus: three hundred yuan per person.

From that point on, the sales commission from the Douyus would also be credited to the First Research Team.

At the end of the year, the commissions would be paid out based on individual performance.

Although Zhao Jing had only graduated from high school and never attended college, she had been teaching herself ever since she started working there last year.

She was exceptionally capable, full of ideas, and had the courage to both dream big and act on it, which led to her current achievements.

Yang Jianguo was ecstatic. At a general staff meeting, he praised Zhao Jing’s team and even awarded them large red flowers as a commendation.

He did this to encourage everyone who was willing to delve into their work and be diligent.

Originally, many had thought that a private enterprise wouldn’t treat its workers well, but it was now clear that wasn’t the case.

Working here was almost like being at a state-owned enterprise; they had all the benefits one would expect.

But here, no one slacked off.

Because the compensation for hard work and diligence was completely different from what you’d get for just coasting by.

Take Zhao Jing’s team, for example. Their future salaries would be higher than others’. They had earned it through their hard work in research and development; they had proven their ability.

As for the staff in the breeding areas, those who raised more fish, raised them well, and kept them from getting sick also earned very good wages. Everything was determined by the results of one’s labor.

As a result, internal competition was fierce. After all, who didn’t want to earn a high salary? It stood to reason: if you worked the same shift, and someone else could make two or three hundred while you only made one hundred, wouldn’t you feel discontent?

But the evaluation system was fair. If you were unhappy with your pay, you just had to work harder, and your salary would go up.

It was precisely this performance-driven environment that kept the fish farm workers’ attitudes and morale so high.

Han Xiaorui gave instructions, "Brother Jianguo, when we ship to new clients this time, include a sample and a price list."

Yang Jianguo chuckled. "Xiao Rui, the price lists, complete with color pages, are already printed. We’ve also prepared some of the beautiful Douyus to be sent out along with the next shipment."

"In fact, a batch of Butterfly Tails is heading to Japan today. It’s going by air freight, so Kuno Hiroo’s side should receive it soon. The ornamental fish market over there is huge; we might get an order very quickly."

Han Xiaorui was delighted. "Great! Our company’s R&D team is really something. Thanks for all your hard work, Brother Jianguo."

Yang Jianguo gave a hearty laugh. "Hey, this is my factory, too. It’s my career, so of course I have to give it my all. Now that Cuicui is at home with two nannies to help with the kids, she can finally relax a little."

"All of this takes money to give Cuicui a better life. Otherwise, I’d feel guilty, like I was letting her down."

They only had one child of their own, but now they had to raise his younger cousin’s two children as well.

Being able to afford nannies meant she didn’t have to do so much of the work herself, which put Yang Jianguo’s mind at ease.

Han Xiaorui nodded. "Yes, Sister Cuicui has had it tough. Thankfully, you two are a loving couple and can overcome any difficulty. And Uncle Yang has come to terms with things, too. He’s doing pretty well now."

Yang Jianguo sighed wistfully. "Sigh, my uncle... he lives for those kids now. His four granddaughters are the apple of his eye. He’s channeling all the disappointment he feels toward my cousin into the children."

Han Xiaorui smiled. "It’s good that he has something to focus on. My Pingping and An’an get anxious if they go a single day without seeing their grandpa. Last night, they didn’t get to see him, so they insisted on calling him before bed. They only went to sleep after hearing his voice and saying good night."

Yang Jianguo’s face lit up. "That’s right. Nowadays, my uncle just has to think of his four granddaughters and he’s full of energy. And speaking of that, I have to thank you. If it weren’t for you, my uncle might not have been able to hold on."

Han Xiaorui replied humbly, "Uncle Yang is good to me, and I see him as an elder. It’s what I should do. Xiao Jing and I don’t have many relatives, so you all are like our family."

Yang Jianguo was touched. "That’s right. My uncle, Cuicui, and I—we are your family. If anyone bullies you, you tell me."

"Okay. Thank you, Brother Jianguo." After saying her goodbyes, Han Xiaorui headed home, carrying a few of the beautiful, modified Douyus with her.

She took out a small, oval-shaped fish tank specifically to keep the Douyus in.

When Pingping and An’an got home from school, they saw the new fish and loved them. They were so brightly colored that the children immediately named them: Little White, Little Red, Little Blue, Little Black, Little Purple...

Free from her worries, Han Xiaorui felt a sense of relief and threw herself back into her work.

One good thing was happening after another. Han Xiaorui could barely keep up, and she was already eager to visit the site tomorrow to see what was next.
