The Smiling Death
Chapter 579: Do you actually want to be with him?
Adelia stared at the girl sitting in front of her.
She blinked several times.
She had heard Seraphina clearly. And as someone with considerably more experience in matters of the life, Adelia had already understood what was happening the moment Seraphina began talking about her "friend."
There was no friend. Seraphina was talking about herself.
And the man she had described. The cute, handsome, mischievous, kind, and constantly flirting could only be one person.
And that was Amon.
Adelia’s eyes widened slightly.
’No way she’s in love with Amon.’
She didn’t know how to respond.
The evidence was practically written all over Seraphina’s face. Her cheeks were burning red, her voice became nervous whenever she mentioned him, and she couldn’t even bring herself to say his name directly.
Anyone with even a little experience could tell.
The problem wasn’t that Seraphina had fallen in love.
The problem was that Amon already had a lover.
And judging by Seraphina’s words, things had already progressed considerably between them.
"And..." Seraphina hesitated before continuing.
"There is one problem."
Adelia looked at her attentively.
"That man already has a girlfriend..."
Her voice became quieter.
"I don’t know what to do. I mean... my friend she doesn’t know what to do."
Adelia’s expression twitched.
’There it is again.’
She really wasn’t even trying to hide it anymore.
Seraphina lowered her gaze.
"Today, he took her somewhere behind the academy. And there... he kissed her."
"What?!"
Adelia’s eyes widened in genuine shock. She almost stood up from her seat.
"He... did what?"
She needed to make absolutely certain she hadn’t misunderstood.
Seraphina’s face became even redder.
"He... kissed her."
Adelia stared at her.
Seraphina nervously continued.
"And then he pulled her into his arms and stroked her head while they fell asleep together."
Her fingers tightened into a fist.
"She felt... really warm in his embrace."
Adelia’s mouth remained slightly open.
’So Amon actually kissed Seraphina.’
For a moment, she didn’t know what to think.
She had known Amon for quite some time. He was playful, shamelessly flirtatious, and certainly not shy when it came to teasing women.
But this was different.
He had actually taken Seraphina somewhere private, kissed her, and then stayed beside her until they fell asleep together.
And now Seraphina was sitting here, completely flustered, trying to figure out what her feelings meant.
Adelia slowly lowered her gaze.
"What a troublesome boy..."
She couldn’t help but sigh inwardly.
Amon already had Scarlett.
Yet he was apparently trying to pursue Seraphina as well.
So he’s really planning to become a womanizer. Adelia leaned back against the sofa and rubbed her forehead.
Across from her, Seraphina watched her anxiously.
She had come here because she genuinely didn’t know what to do.
"Professor..."
Adelia looked up.
"What should she do?"
There was genuine hope in Seraphina’s eyes. She was expecting some good advice from her.
Adelia’s heart softened.
’What am I supposed to tell her?’
Should she tell Seraphina to distance herself from Amon?
That would certainly be the safest advice.
But was it really her place to tell a young woman whom she should or shouldn’t love?
And besides, Amon’s relationship with Scarlett wasn’t something Adelia fully understood either.
But what Amon is doing isn’t exactly right.
Adelia sighed again.
She couldn’t simply encourage Seraphina to pursue someone who already had a girlfriend.
Yet she also couldn’t bring herself to crush the girl’s feelings.
Then another memory surfaced. Her conversation with Scarlett.
Scarlett had once spoken to her about Amon and asked her directly whether she had feelings for him.
At the time, Scarlett had made something very clear.
She wasn’t afraid of the possibility that other women might fall in love with Amon, as long as she was someone who would truly love him, and could be useful for him anyway possible.
Amon doesn’t think that way, but for Scarlett if that woman have something worth and she would allow her to be with him.
She had even said that she wouldn’t necessarily reject Seraphina’s feelings.
Adelia’s expression became complicated.
Scarlett already knows what kind of person Amon was, she looked back at Seraphina.
The girl was waiting patiently for her answer.
Adelia finally smiled gently.
"Seraphina."
"Yes?"
"First, stop worrying about what you should do."
Seraphina blinked.
Adelia leaned slightly forward.
"You’ve only just begun to understand your own feelings. You don’t have to make a decision tonight."
"But..."
"Love isn’t something you can solve like an examination question."
Seraphina became silent.
Adelia continued softly.
"If you truly have feelings for him, then you should first ask yourself one thing."
"What?"
"Do you actually want to be with him?"
Seraphina’s eyes widened.
Adelia smiled.
"Not because he’s handsome. Not because he’s kind to you. Not because you’re afraid of losing him."
She paused.
"But because when you imagine your future without him... does that thought hurt?"
Seraphina’s lips parted slightly. She immediately remembered Amon. His stupid jokes. His shameless flirting. The way he smiled.
The way he had protected her. The warmth of his hand. And most importantly the feeling she had experienced when his lips touched hers.
Her heart began beating faster.
Adelia noticed her expression and smiled knowingly.
"That reaction already tells you quite a lot."
Seraphina immediately lowered her head.
Her cheeks burned.
"Professor..."
Adelia chuckled softly.
"Don’t worry. I’m not going to judge you."
She reached over and gently patted Seraphina’s head.
"But there’s another person whose feelings you need to consider."
Seraphina looked up.
"Scarlett."
The moment she heard that name, Seraphina’s expression became complicated.
Adelia’s voice remained gentle.
"Whatever decision you make, don’t forget that she is a person with feelings too."
Seraphina slowly nodded.
"I understand."
"And if you decide that you truly want Amon..."
Adelia paused.
"...then don’t lie to yourself about it."
Seraphina stared at her.
Adelia smiled.
"At the very least, you deserve to be honest about your own heart."
Seraphina remained silent. The confusion in her eyes seemed to lessen.
She still didn’t have an answer. But perhaps she didn’t need one. She simply needed to understand what her heart truly wanted.
Seraphina smile softly and stood up. Then bowed to Adelia. "Thank you professor Adelia. Your words helped me a lot."
---
Seraphina had already left the infirmary.
Now, only Adelia remained, sitting alone in the quiet room.
She let out a long sigh and leaned back against the sofa.
"Sigh... For some reason, I can already tell what decision Seraphina is going to make."
She closed her eyes, looking mentally exhausted.
"Amon... That boy actually did something like that..."
Her expression became complicated.
"He kissed Seraphina."
Adelia leaned forward, resting her elbow on her knee and her chin against her palm.
For some reason, the thought bothered her more than she expected.
Then a memory suddenly surfaced.
’He hugged me before.’
She remembered the moment in the palace. The warmth of Amon’s embrace. The strange flutter in her chest. How peaceful she had felt in his arms.
And then there was Selena, she even caught us and teased me about it.
Adelia’s cheeks gradually became warm.
"I... in his harem?"
She immediately shook her head.
"What am I thinking, Adelia?"
She covered part of her face with one hand.
"That’s wrong. He’s my student!"
She sighed again.
It seemed like she had done nothing but sigh ever since Seraphina entered the infirmary.
Adelia couldn’t deny that Amon was different from the other students she had seen.
He was troublesome, shameless, and far too carefree. Yet somehow, spending time with him was enjoyable.
And then there was that day, her first date.
Adelia had never expected that her first real date would be with one of her own students. Even remembering it now made her heart beat slightly faster.
"But he already has a lover..."
She lowered her hand and stared at the floor.
"And perhaps he’ll have more soon."
Her expression became troubled.
"He’s only a commoner, too..."
She paused.
"But if Seraphina accepts him..."
Adelia slowly rubbed her forehead.
"Then she would probably marry her."
She leaned back again and stared at the ceiling.
"This is getting complicated."
A brief silence followed. Then she muttered quietly.
"Why do I feel like I’m hoping for something too?"
Her own words made her freeze. Adelia’s eyes widened.
"What?"
She quickly shook her head.
"No, no. That’s ridiculous."
But then another thought suddenly appeared in her mind.
A dangerous one, her face slowly turned red.
’What if Amon suddenly confessed to me next?’
Her heart skipped.
’Or what if he showed his feelings the same way he did with Seraphina?’
She imagined Amon approaching her. His usual mischievous smile. That confident yet slightly nervous expression and then kiss.
Adelia’s face became completely flushed.
"H-How would I react to that?"
She covered her cheeks with both hands.
"Would I... allow him?"
For a while, she remained completely silent. Then, despite herself, she whispered,
"...It doesn’t sound that ba–"
Her eyes widened immediately.
"No!"
She shook her head vigorously.
"It’s bad!"
She lowered her hands and stared at the empty room.
"But..."
Her voice became quieter.
"He used to flirt with Seraphina..."
She remembered how Amon had always teased and flirted with her.
"And now he’s made it clear that he wants her."
Adelia swallowed.
"If he was willing to act on those feelings..."
Her cheeks became warm again.
"...and he has flirted with me before..."
She slowly looked away.
"Then there’s a pretty good chance he might do the same with me someday."
Silence filled the infirmary.
Adelia stared blankly ahead. After several seconds, she buried her face in her hands.
"Oh, Goddess..."
She let out another exhausted sigh.
"What am I supposed to do?"
The usually composed Professor Adelia had no idea what to think. And judging by the thoughts running through her mind.
It seemed tonight would be her turn to not sleep well.
