The Solar Heretic
Chapter 29- The Lord
Chapter 29: 29- The Lord
Six hours later, the main gates of the Sector Four Harvest House did not open for beast caravans.
They were blown off their hinges from the inside by a single wave of frost so cold the iron shattered like porcelain on the cobblestones.
The slums of Sector Four went dead silent.
Scavengers and merchants who had been peeking out of their boarded-up windows immediately dropped to the floorboards, pulling rags over their heads to hide their body heat.
Out of the ruined archway of the Harvest House walked sixty men in full, interlocking silver plates.
These weren’t the local garrison patrols who collected protection money with rusty halberds.
They carried long, heavy pikes tipped with rune-etched silver, and every single one of them moved with the silent, synchronized precision of Level 1 Mid- and Late-Stage retainers from the Second and Third Ring.
Behind them rolled a single black carriage drawn by four massive, six-legged horses whose hides were covered in natural silver scales.
The carriage stopped at the top of the wide stone ramp leading down into the main sewer grates of Purgatory.
The door opened, and Lord Cassian Vane stepped out onto the muddy cobblestones of the Outer Ring.
As his boots touched the mud, the filth within twenty feet of him froze into solid, gray stone.
The smog hanging in the air above the street crystallized and fell like dirty black snow.
Waiters and lieutenants from the local garrison were lined up along the ramp.
Next to them, hanging upside down by his ankles from a rusted streetlamp, was Voss.
The Slum King wasn’t dead yet, though he looked like he wished he was.
Both of his eyes were gone now, his massive warhammer was lying broken in the gutter, and his patchwork furs were soaked in half-frozen blood from a dozen thin, surgical wire-cuts that Lyra had left on him hours ago before she descended into the lower drains.
In front of the ramp, kneeling beside a stretcher covered in a white silk sheet, was the Hound-Master who had gone down into sub-level six an hour after Lyra’s life-lantern had snuffed out in the family ancestral hall.
Cassian walked past the hanging Slum King without glancing up. He stopped beside the stretcher.
There was nothing under the silk sheet except two broken rapier hilts and a scorched scrap of high-collared leather coat.
The Silver Eye had eaten the rest of his niece five hours ago.
"Speak," Cassian said. His voice was quiet, almost gentle, yet the Hound-Master’s teeth chattered so violently he bit his own tongue.
"Sub-level six, My Lord," the Hound-Master stammered, holding up one of the broken rapier hilts with both hands.
"Outside an old boiler room. All four Pale Hounds were killed. Two by the forbidden Fyrn frost, two by extreme heat trauma. And Lady Lyra’s blades..."
Cassian looked down at the broken hilt.
The break in the three-times-folded silver steel wasn’t jagged, like it had been snapped by a hammer.
The edges of the break were rounded, smooth, and blackened, as if the metal had been dipped into the heart of a blast furnace right before it parted.
"A Low-Stage defect cannot melt Second-Ring steel," Cassian murmured, picking up the hilt.
The metal was cold now, but when he pressed his Level 2 sense into the grain of the steel, he felt the lingering scar of an energy so violent, so completely alien to the Moon’s cold mist, that it made the silver ichor in his own veins recoil.
"Nor can a Mid-Stage. Lyra was almost a second level. Soon she would have drunk the Silver Blood."
"The brickwork in the tunnel was vitrified, My Lord," the Hound-Master whispered, his forehead touching the frozen mud.
"Turned to glass for thirty feet in both directions. And the water in the drain had boiled completely dry. Whatever that boy has in his chest..it is dangerous. And they took her core."
Up on the streetlamp, Voss let out a wet, bubbling cough that turned into a wheezing laugh, blood dripping from his chin onto the frozen cobbles.
"Told her..." Voss rasped, swinging slightly on his chain. "Told the little bitch before she took my other eye... don’t go down the pipe. That boy ain’t right in the head. He eats the rocks raw, Vane. Chews ’em up like pig gristle. And now he’s chewing on your niece."
Cassian didn’t turn his head. He raised his left hand two inches and flicked his wrist.
A single shard of frozen mana, no larger than a sewing needle, flashed from his fingertips and passed cleanly through the center of Voss’s forehead.
The Slum King stopped swinging. A second later, the massive, mutated body of Purgatory’s ruler began to break apart into rising silver dust, leaving only his rusted chains clinking empty against the lamppost and a dull, tainted Peak-Stage crystal dropping into the dirt.
Cassian didn’t even bother having a guard pick Voss’s crystal up.
He stepped over it and looked out across the sprawling, soot-stained roofs of Sector Four and the three neighboring slum sectors that bordered the river.
"My Lord," his First Captain stepped forward from the ranks of the sixty retainers, his hand resting on the pommel of his pike.
"The sinkhole at the bottom of sub-level six connects to the main industrial runoff beneath Sectors Three, Four, and Five. If they survived taking Lady Lyra’s core, they could be anywhere in the lower rings by now. Shall I request a lockdown warrant from the Inquisition?"
"If you mention the Inquisition to me again, Ren, I will hang you from that lamp in his place," Cassian said softly.
Ren swallowed hard, bowing his head. "Forgive me, My Lord."
"Think," Cassian said, turning to face his captain, the pale light of the Silver Eye reflecting off his aluminum-colored hair.
"The boy has a defect that burns hot enough to melt Third-Ring steel and vaporize Peak-Stage mist. The girl carries the Pure Moon of House Fyr, the only cryo-bloodline in existence that does not suffer from lunar rot. Alone, the boy burns himself to ash in a week. Alone, the girl freezes to death before she hits twenty-one. Together, they digested eighteen of our purest crystals and killed a Peak cultivator in four days."
Cassian’s eyes narrowed as he looked down into the black mouth of the sewer grate.
"If the High Council or the Hearth family finds out what those two are doing, that you can pair a solar defect with a Fyrn to bypass lunar taint entirely they won’t execute them, Ren. They will take them from us, lock them in the Crown’s breeding kennels, and use them to build a bloodline that makes House Vane obsolete."
Ren’s eyes widened slightly behind his visor. "You want them alive?"
"I want the girl’s head in a box, and I want the boy’s chest cut open on my table while his heart is still beating so our scholars can see how he filters the mist," Cassian corrected coldly. "And we are not going to chase them through pipes two at a time like idiots anymore."
Cassian walked back to the steps of his black carriage and turned to address the sixty Second-Ring retainers waiting in the street.
"Open the floodgates on the northern chemical reservoir," Cassian ordered, his voice carrying clearly across the silent square.
"Flood every storm drain, blood-pipe, and sub-basement in Sectors Three, Four, and Five with boiling lye-sludge. Drown Purgatory from the bottom up. Flush every single rat, beggar, and scavenger out of the ground and onto the surface streets."
"My Lord," Ren hesitated. "There are ten thousand slum workers living in the lower levels across those three sectors. If we flood the deep drains with lye, half of them won’t make the ladders in time, and the Harvest Houses will lose a month of labor."
"Then we will buy more laborers from the outer camps next month," Cassian said, stepping up into his carriage. "Set up iron checkpoints at every manhole and stairwell across all three sectors. Put four Mid-Stages and one Late-Stage at every single grate. Check the eyes of every man who crawls out of the mud, and strip the cloak off every woman. If anyone refuses to open their eyes at a checkpoint, kill them and everyone standing within ten feet of them."
He reached for the carriage door, then paused, looking at his First Captain one last time.
"And call my brother back from the Third Ring border," Cassian added quietly. "Tell him to bring his heavy armor. The boy is probably Late stage or Peak. Nobody engages him alone. When you find them, collapse the street on their heads and bury them under fifty spears."
"At once, My Lord!"
The carriage door slammed shut.
Behind the sixty retainers, four Late-Stage engineers broke away from the ranks, running toward the massive iron wheel-house that controlled the industrial waste reservoirs at the top of the canyon wall.
Three hundred feet below the cobblestones, deep in the dry concrete tunnels between Sector Four and Sector Three, Sol, wrapped in a stolen scavenger’s coat with Valera leaning heavily against his good shoulder as they limped through the dark suddenly stopped walking.
His ears twitched.
Miles away, echoing through the stone bones of the earth, the massive iron sluice gates of the northern reservoir groaned open for the first time in thirty years, and the distant, thunderous roar of ten million gallons of poisoned water began rushing down into the dark.
