The Solar Heretic
Chapter 6- Progress
Chapter 6: 6- Progress
They couldn’t stay in the open alley. Valera guided his blind, burning steps through the labyrinth of the slums until they reached an abandoned cistern deep underground.
It was isolated, damp, and perfectly hidden from the endless twilight above.
They sat on the cracked stone floor, forced into an intimate, desperate proximity. Sol pressed his back against hers, just like they had in the Colosseum.
The equilibrium was instantaneous. Her freezing aura kept his blood from boiling over, and his radiant heat kept her from freezing solid.
"Thanks for the help, you can have this as a reward" Sol rasped, pulling the jagged, glowing silver crystal from his pocket. It was the only thing left of Rix.
Valera looked over her shoulder, her blue-tinted eyes widening slightly " I don’t need this low-quality shard, you keep it"
"Fine then," Sol said. He didn’t hesitate. He closed his fist around the crystal and pushed his violent, defective energy into his palm. "I’ll absorb it now then."
The shard dissolved into a stream of pure, violent lunar energy, rushing up Sol’s arm. The moment it hit his Sun’s Believer core, the furnace roared to life.
The core acted like a physical grinder, mercilessly incinerating the moon’s taint and converting the remaining energy into raw, blistering power.
The heat inside Sol spiked dangerously. His skin glowed a fierce, molten orange in the pitch-black cistern.
But before the excess energy could melt his ribs, Valera absorbed the backlash. The agonizing heat bled directly into her freezing flesh, thawing the ice in her veins while simultaneously fueling her own broken lunar core.
It was a perfect, symbiotic loop.
They sat like that for an entire day, locked in a cycle of fire and ice. They breathed in unison, sharing the violent burden of their defective bodies as the dark hours blurred together.
Finally, the glowing shard in Sol’s hand completely dissolved into mundane, gray ash. Sol opened his eyes, pushing a controlled pulse of heat to his retinas.
The Strobe flashed, illuminating Valera’s steady, warming thermal signature behind him.
The frosted panel materialized in his vision.
[LUNAR SHARD ABSORBED.]
[TAINT PURGED. PURE VITALITY EXTRACTED.]
[SYMBIOTIC CULTIVATION DETECTED: Heat-Sink Efficiency Maximum.]
STATUS: Level 1 (Flesh and Bone) Low-Stage - 11% Progression to Mid-Stage.
Eleven percent. In a single day. A normal slum Cultivator might spend half a year licking the scraps of the slaughter-line to achieve that much growth, and they would risk mutation with every bite.
Sol had found a cheat code, and Valera was the key.
But out in the waking world, the consequences of his power were already hunting them.
Back in the Harvest House of Vane, the slaughter-line had completely stopped. The deafening shrieks of the beasts were silenced.
A squad of elite inner-city Enforcers, clad in polished silver-wood armor, surrounded a massive iron table.
A pale, elegantly dressed noble Cultivator pinched the cauterized flesh left from Anvil’s body, his eyes narrowing in disgust.
"No blood," the noble murmured, wiping the black ash from his pristine white gloves. "A Level 1 High, butchered by a heat signature so intense it sealed the wound instantly. And the guards say he used a rusted meat cleaver."
He turned his cold, silver eyes to the terrified slum guards kneeling on the blood-stained floor.
"Lock down the sector," the noble ordered, his voice echoing over the silent slaughter-line.
"Shut the gates. No one leaves the slums. I don’t care how many rats you have to bleed. Find the butcher who did this, and bring me his core."
Deep underground, in the pitch-black abandoned cistern, Sol and Valera finally broke their physical connection.
The moment their backs separated, a thick cloud of steam rolled off their bodies as the freezing air of the cellar clashed with the residual heat of Sol’s skin.
Sol exhaled a long, steady breath. He pushed a pulse of heat to his eyes.
Flash.
In his Strobe vision, the world lit up in fiery orange. Things looked sharper now.
The agonizing malnutrition that had plagued him for weeks was gone. His muscles felt dense, packed with the raw, violent energy..
He looked at Valera. Her thermal signature had changed, too.
When she first found him in the alley, she had been a terrifying, solid mass of deep blue, a girl seconds away from freezing to death.
Now, her core pulsed with a terrifyingly pure, brilliant white-blue, bordered by a faint, warm yellow from where she had absorbed his excess heat.
"You’re not shaking anymore," Sol rasped, letting his vision fade to save energy.
"Neither are you," Valera’s voice echoed in the dark. It was calm, aristocratic, and completely out of place in a damp slum sewer.
"You really are blind, aren’t you? Your eyes sometimes glow like hot coals, but now they don’t focus on anything."
"I see heat," Sol said bluntly. "If it doesn’t bleed or burn, it doesn’t exist to me."
He heard the rustle of her ragged clothes as she shifted on the stone floor.
"A Fyrn," Sol continued, piecing together the name. "I have heard of the House of Fyrn, weren’t they eradicated ten years ago?"
Valera let out a short, bitter laugh. "They were. My family was slaughtered for having a legacy core. That’s what they call the cores that one can inherit."
Flash.
Sol strobed his vision. He saw her looking down at her hands, where a thin layer of frost was already beginning to form over her knuckles again.
"It’s a Pure Moon Core," Valera whispered into the dark.
"Godblessed. It grants absolute, perfect control over lunar frost. But the system demands a price for perfection. My curse is the Permafrost. The core is too pure for a mortal body. If I don’t constantly vent the cold, or find a heat source violent enough to counter it... my own perfect core freezes my blood solid.."
Darkness.
"So we’re both cursed," Sol said, picking up his rusted cleaver. He ran his thumb over the edge. The blade had warped from the sheer heat he had channeled into it to kill Anvil.
It was dangerously close to shattering. "We need each other to cultivate. I give you a furnace, you give me a heat-sink."
"It’s mutual help then," Valera agreed. "But it won’t matter if we don’t move. The House of Vane won’t let an Overseer’s death go unpunished. They will purge this entire sector to find you. Have you ever fought an Enforcer, Sol?"
"I’ve cut up meat for them," he replied.
"Enforcers aren’t beasts," Valera said, her voice turning sharp and tactical. "They have unbroken lunar cores. They wear silver-wood armor that absorbs kinetic impact, and their weapons are forged to channel frost. Your cleaver won’t survive another clash with a Cultivator’s weapon."
Sol frowned in the dark. She was right. Anvil had nearly killed him, and Anvil was just a Harvest House boss. Elite Enforcers would tear him apart.
"Then I need a new weapon," Sol said.
Before Valera could answer, a heavy, rhythmic vibration shook the ceiling of the cistern. Dust fell onto Sol’s shoulders.
Above them, on the surface streets, the heavy marching boots of the Vane Enforcers were already spreading through the slums.
They were kicking in doors. The faint, muffled screams of scavengers echoed down through the cracked stone.
The purge had already begun.
Sol pushed a steady stream of heat into his eyes, keeping his Strobe active. He looked at Valera.
Her brilliant, white-blue aura flared with combat readiness as she gripped her rusted iron pipe, the metal instantly freezing solid under her touch.
"They’re burning out the sector," Sol said, his grip tightening on his damaged cleaver.
"Then we go hunting," Valera said, her eyes turning a dangerous, icy white. "If we need Cultivator weapons, we’re going to have to take them off their corpses."
