Chapter 523: Chapter 453: Miracle

"Enemy attack! Enemy attack!"

A sonorous bell toll shattered the silence of the night.

The Zhenxi Army’s main camp plunged into chaos. A hundred meters ahead, a dark, overwhelming army tens of thousands strong was closing in.

The aura of battle was so thick it was suffocating.

The veterans were fine. Having seen this all before, they could even crack a joke or two, but the recruits’ legs were already shaking uncontrollably.

Fortunately, the Zhenxi Army was already fully armed and prepared for the slaughter.

Despite having gone days without sleep, the ironclad discipline of the Zhenxi Army’s soldiers ensured their strength had not waned much.

Several Generals had already appeared at the very front of the camp.

The white hair of Grand General Zhenxi danced in the fierce wind as he silently gazed at the army close at hand.

The great battle was finally about to begin.

Gao Xiong’s heart was as still as an ancient well, utterly undisturbed.

He was the Empire’s longest-serving Grand General. He had spent a full century on the battlefields of the Ximo and had long since grown accustomed to war and death.

’Tonight will be no different, except that more people will die.’

This was not the most desperate situation Gao Xiong had ever faced.

’As long as Xu Dingchun is still here, the Zhenxi Army will endure. The only thing that might change are the faces in it.’

"Archers, ready... Loose!"

A heart-shaking command rang out.

A Commander directed the archers, launching the first volley.

Instantly, a dark cloud of arrows flew toward the Ximo forces.

Arrows, so devastating against ordinary men, were not nearly as effective in a war between Martial Artists. A few of the Ximo powerhouses fell, but most simply deflected the shafts with their weapons.

In just a few breaths, the Ximo powerhouses had charged to within striking distance of the main camp.

They clashed with the Zhenxi Army soldiers who charged out to meet them.

The Generals of the Zhenxi Army also found their opponents.

At that moment, the formidable power of Grand General Zhenxi, Gao Xiong, was on full display as he single-handedly fought two Mingxin Grandmasters.

Wumu and Kongshan joined forces to keep Gao Xiong occupied.

Besides Gao Xiong, the Zhenxi Army had one other Mingxin Grandmaster: General Huwei, Wu Peng.

Compared to Grand General Gao Xiong, Wu Peng’s combat strength was considerably lower.

He was locked in a fierce struggle with Mo Na.

But this was far from enough. With no expert of corresponding rank to hold him back, one of the Ximo Mingxin Powerhouses was like a tiger descending from the mountains, free to begin a slaughter.

Gao Xiong’s heart sank as he surveyed the battlefield.

The Ximo Alliance Army’s lineup was far stronger than the Zhenxi Army had anticipated.

Allowing a Mingxin Grandmaster to rampage unchecked on the battlefield was a fatal mistake.

"Brothers, it’s our time to act!"

Qian the Sixth grinned.

This time, the Ximo had deployed a full four Mingxin Grandmasters.

In fact, counting the missing Ah Du Mu, it should have been five.

"A Mingxin Grandmaster! This is going to be fun!"

Zhao the Sixth laughed heartily as well.

Six Generals from the Zhenxi Army formed an array, surrounding the Mingxin Grandmaster. Their coordination was seamless, and they actually managed to stop him.

But they could only stop him, nothing more.

"A few ants. Do you really think you can stop me with one shabby array?"

The Ximo Mingxin Grandmaster sneered relentlessly.

Qian the Sixth cursed, "If you’ve got the balls, then cut us down, you Ximo scumbag!"

The taunts felt good, but a palm strike from a Mingxin Grandmaster was truly agonizing to receive.

If Grand General Xu hadn’t taught them this joint attack technique, they would have been no match for a Mingxin Grandmaster, no matter what.

After all, not everyone was a Bai Yuan.

He was someone who could fight a Mingxin Grandmaster to a standstill while only at the Sensing Martial Artist level.

Even if they could stop this Ximo powerhouse before them, they couldn’t hold out for long.

No array, no matter how ingenious, could bridge such a chasm in power.

Qian the Sixth’s heart sank as he watched the Zhenxi Army soldiers falling one by one around him. Forcing a breath, he raised his saber and charged forward once more.

’Even if I die tonight, I can’t let him continue this massacre!’

...

The horizon began to glow with the pale white of dawn.

"WOOOO..."

A long, drawn-out horn blast sounded, and the Ximo army retreated like a receding tide.

The Ximo army had retreated.

"Haaa..."

Qian the Sixth collapsed onto the ground.

’I actually survived.’

He felt as if every bone in his body was about to snap; he didn’t have an ounce of strength left.

Five Sensing Martial Artists had held off a Mingxin Grandmaster for two hours. They had every right to be proud.

"We finally held them off."

Qian the Sixth looked around.

Mangled corpses littered the ground. It was a scene of utter chaos, filled with cries, wails, and urgent shouts...

Soldiers with minor injuries carried the heavily wounded into the camp tents.

As for the dead... there were too many to tend to.

A fierce wind swept across the land, a prelude to the countless corpses that would be buried beneath the endless yellow sand.

This was the fate of many soldiers in the Zhenxi Army.

Even the dream of returning home for burial had become a luxury.

The vast yellow sand would have to serve as their burial shroud.

Qian the Sixth struggled to his feet.

He quickly realized something was wrong.

"Zhao the Third, what’s wrong?!"

The other three who had joined forces to fight the Ximo Mingxin Grandmaster had already stood up. Only Zhao the Third remained on the ground, completely still.

Qian the Sixth began to panic.

Hearing the commotion, several other Zhenxi Army Generals gathered around.

One of them walked over to Zhao the Third’s side. His face turned white, and he hung his head.

"General... General Zhao is dead."

"Bullshit! How could a scoundrel like him die so young?"

Qian the Sixth staggered over to Zhao the Third’s body.

For once, Zhao the Third was quiet. His chest was no longer rising and falling; he was utterly still.

Just then, a voice spoke up. "His internal organs were completely shattered. He is a hero of the Zhenxi Army."

Qian the Sixth whipped his head around.

"Shut your mouth, Liu! Save the commentary."
