Chapter 140: The Venom Ring

  • Next Chapter

The first wave came within the hour.

Three Spine-Fin Darters, drawn by the pulsing mana. They darted through the dark water in loose formation, their spined fins catching the violet light as they approached the fissure where Cindy sat in her trance.

Gray had already moved forward without caring about Phantom Cloak because this wasn’t an ambush, this was a warning.

He positioned himself between the Darters and Cindy, his blade-tentacles spreading wide.

’Wrong place,’ he said. ’Wrong time.’

The Darters didn’t slow. They were hungry, driven by the mana pulsing from the cavern, blind to everything else.

Gray deployed Neurotoxic Drift.

The venom cloud spread through the water in a wide, dense curtain, settling between Cindy and the approaching creatures. The Darters swam straight into it before they realized what was happening.

[SPINE-FIN DARTER — HP: 98 / 160]

[SPINE-FIN DARTER — HP: 86 / 160]

The Darters convulsed, their movements slowing. Gray didn’t wait for the venom to finish them. He fired Needle Storm into the cluster, the paralytic needles exploding into crescent blades that carved through all three at once.

The corpses drifted toward the seafloor. Gray absorbed them quickly, the biomass settling into his cracked carapace.

He returned to his position, his senses sweeping the surrounding water.

’Wonderful. They’re lining up to die.’

He deployed another Neurotoxic Drift, layering it around the fissure in a wide ring. The venom cloud hung in the water, invisible and silent, a deadly moat between Cindy and anything that wanted to reach her.

The second wave came an hour later.

A Glimmerworm, larger than the ones he’d fought before, its segmented body half-buried in the seafloor as it burrowed toward the mana signature. It didn’t see the venom cloud until it was already inside.

[NEUROTOXIC DRIFT — 22 DAMAGE PER SECOND]

[GLIMMERWORM — HP: 520 / 650]

The worm thrashed, its burrowing disrupted by the venom burning through its segments. Gray fired Void Reaper’s Lance into its exposed flank.

[VOID REAPER’S LANCE — 218 DAMAGE]

[GLIMMERWORM — HP: 302 / 650]

[BLEED — 10 DAMAGE PER SECOND]

The worm tried to retreat, to burrow back into the sand, but Gray didn’t give it the chance. He activated Current Dash, reforming directly above it, and drove all eight blade-tentacles into its head.

[NEEDLE STORM — 156 DAMAGE]

[GLIMMERWORM — HP: 146 / 650]

[PARALYZE — 2 SECONDS]

Grip Jaw locked on.

Four blade-tentacles wrapped around the stunned worm’s body, the crystalline scythes digging into the gaps between its plates. He squeezed. The segments compressed with a wet crunch, violet fluid spurting from the cracks.

[GRIP JAW — 64 DAMAGE]

[GLIMMERWORM — HP: 82 / 650]

He squeezed again, driving the barbs deeper.

[GRIP JAW — 58 DAMAGE]

[GLIMMERWORM — HP: 24 / 650]

The worm twitched weakly, its mouth gaping. Gray pressed his bell against its flank.

’Goodnight.’

Overcharge detonated.

Lightning surged through his tentacles and into the worm’s body, lighting it from within. The violet veins flared once, then went dark.

[OVERCHARGE — 204 DAMAGE]

[GLIMMERWORM — HP: 0 / 650]

[GLIMMERWORM DEFEATED — 520 EXP]

The worm went limp. Gray released it and let the corpse drift toward the seafloor, absorbing it quickly.

He redeployed the venom ring where the worm had thrashed through, reinforcing the barrier.

’That’s two.’

The third wave was worse.

A pair of Mirage Squids, their chromatophores flickering as they approached. They were smarter than the others. They saw the venom cloud, their colors shifting as they analyzed the threat.

The first one circled wide, trying to find a gap in the barrier. The second one drifted higher, preparing to attack from above.

’Smarter than the last ones. Which is a low bar, apparently.’

He activated Phantom Cloak and vanished. The squids paused, their golden eyes scanning the water, their chromatophores flickering in confusion.

Gray reformed behind the first squid and fired Void Reaper’s Lance.

[VOID REAPER’S LANCE — 212 DAMAGE]

[MIRAGE SQUID — HP: 308 / 520]

[BLEED — 10 DAMAGE PER SECOND]

The squid shrieked, spinning to face him. Its arms lashed out, water compressing into a crushing sphere. Gray activated Current Dash and dissolved, reforming above it.

The second squid fired a water lance at his new position. He didn’t dodge. He let it hit.

[-68 HP]

[GRAY ASHFORD — HP: 912 / 1290]

’That tickled.’

He fired Needle Storm into both squids at once, the crescent blades carving through their arms and mantles.

[NEEDLE STORM — 152 DAMAGE]

[NEEDLE STORM — 148 DAMAGE]

[MIRAGE SQUID (1) — HP: 146 / 520]

[MIRAGE SQUID (2) — HP: 372 / 520]

[PARALYZE — 2 SECONDS]

Both squids froze. Gray drove Void Reaper’s Lance into the first one’s core, then the second.

[VOID REAPER’S LANCE — 218 DAMAGE]

[VOID REAPER’S LANCE — 214 DAMAGE]

[MIRAGE SQUID (1) DEFEATED — 800 EXP]

[MIRAGE SQUID (2) — HP: 158 / 520]

The second squid recovered from the paralysis, its arms flailing. Gray wrapped his tentacles around it and activated Grip Jaw.

[GRIP JAW — 62 DAMAGE]

[GRIP JAW — 58 DAMAGE]

[MIRAGE SQUID (2) — HP: 38 / 520]

Overcharge detonated.

[OVERCHARGE — 202 DAMAGE]

[MIRAGE SQUID (2) DEFEATED — 800 EXP]

Gray absorbed both corpses, his carapace slowly mending. The ambient mana from the collapsed cavern helped, seeping into his wounds, accelerating his natural regeneration.

He returned to his position, reinforcing the venom ring once more.

’Three waves. How many more?’

He glanced at Cindy. She was still in her trance, her glow steady, her frills splayed wide as she continued drawing mana from the collapsed cavern.

’Take your time,’ he thought. ’I’ll hold them off as long as it takes.’

He deployed Neurotoxic Drift again, layering it thicker around her.

Then Gray’s senses prickled.

He turned toward the dark, his blade-tentacles spreading wide.

It emerged from the gloom slowly, unhurried, as if it had all the time in the world.

It was a fish with a long, muscular body, easily fifteen feet from snout to tail, built like a living torpedo. Its scales were a deep, iridescent blue-green, etched with intricate patterns that shifted and shimmered as it moved. The motifs were beautiful in a terrible way, spirals and jagged lines that seemed to pulse with their own internal light.

But it was the weapons that made Gray’s carapace tighten.

A row of serrated spines ran along its dorsal ridge, each one tipped with a glistening droplet of something that smoked faintly in the water. Its pectoral fins were bladed, curved like scythes, their edges gleaming with a metallic sheen. And its tail was a living weapon, tipped with a cluster of barbed, harpoon-like spines that could clearly be launched at prey.

Its eyes were cold and pale, set deep in bony sockets. They locked onto Gray instantly.

The system flickered, and the analysis materialized.

[CERULEAN DOOM — Level 43]

HP: 3200 / 3200

MP: 500 / 500

Threat Level: EXTREME

« Analysis »

An apex predator of the mid-abyssal zone, the Cerulean Doom is a highly evolved hunter that relies on a combination of speed, ranged weaponry, and venomous spines. Its body is covered in natural weapons — bladed fins, venom-tipped dorsal spines, and a tail capable of launching barbed harpoons.

Behavior: Aggressive and highly territorial. The Cerulean Doom will not retreat from a fight. It will pursue prey relentlessly, using its speed to close distance and its ranged attacks to weaken targets before moving in for the kill.

Weakness: The venomous spines along its dorsal ridge are sensitive. Damaging them disrupts the Cerulean Doom’s venom production. Its bladed fins are sharp but fragile, direct impacts can crack or shatter them.

Gray stared at the creature, his blade-tentacles curling tight.

’Here comes the boss,’ he said quietly.
