Chapter 185: Tartarus Essence

They descended into the hollow together.

Gray went first, carrying Cindy’s container carefully against his chest. The passage was narrow, barely wide enough for his shoulders, but he moved slowly, tilting the container so she wouldn’t spill. Cindy pressed her small hands against the transparent walls, her silver eyes scanning the darkness ahead.

Lily followed close behind, her five points folded inward to make herself smaller as she squeezed through the gap. She pulsed with quiet determination, her dark core casting faint shadows on the root walls.

The passage twisted downward, spiraling through the shell like a natural staircase. The roots grew thicker as they descended, weaving together into walls, floors, and ceilings. The iridescent light pulsed steadily, casting the tunnel in a soft, shimmering glow.

After several minutes, the passage opened into a wide chamber.

Gray stepped out of the tunnel and stopped, Cindy’s container held steady against his chest. Lily drifted out behind him, her five points unfolding as she hovered near his shoulder.

The chamber was enormous, easily a hundred feet across, its walls formed entirely from interwoven roots that pulsed with that same iridescent light. The floor was covered in a thick carpet of glowing moss, and in the center of the chamber, rising from the moss like a monument, was a massive root formation that spiraled upward into the ceiling.

At its base, nestled in a hollow carved into the root’s surface, was a pool of liquid that shimmered with every color Gray had ever seen.

Cindy pressed her hands against the container, her frills splaying wide with awe.

"Oh my..."

Gray set the container down gently on the moss and knelt beside the pool. Lily darted past him, her five points spinning with excitement, and immediately began circling the pool, her dark core pulsing with curiosity.

Gray activated his analysis.

[LOCATION DISCOVERED: HEART OF THE TARTARUS]

« Analysis »

A natural mana well located at the core of the Great Tartarus’s shell. The pool is formed from condensed mana that has been purified through the creature’s body over centuries. The liquid is known as Tartarus Essence, and it is one of the rarest substances in the known world.

[WARNING: Tartarus Essence in its raw form is highly toxic. Direct consumption will result in severe mana poisoning, organ failure, and death. The essence must be refined into a potion before it can be safely ingested.]

Gray stared at the shimmering pool, his golden eyes reflecting the countless colors swirling within.

"This is... the essence of the Tartarus."

Cindy pressed her hands against the transparent walls of her container, her silver eyes wide with recognition.

"This is the reward Noir mentioned," she breathed. "This is what she wanted us to find."

She paused, her frills lowering as she studied the pool more carefully.

"But it seems we can’t just drink it. The essence is too concentrated, too raw. If we consume it directly, it’ll tear us apart from the inside."

Gray knelt beside the pool, dipping one finger into the liquid. The moment it touched his skin, he felt a sharp, burning sensation, like acid searing through his flesh. He pulled his hand back quickly, watching the faint red mark on his fingertip fade.

"You’re right," he said. "We need to refine it first. Process it into something safe."

He turned toward Lily, who was still circling the pool with wide, curious pulses, her dark core flickering with barely contained temptation.

"And you," Gray said, his voice firm. "Don’t drink it. Understand?"

Lily stopped mid-orbit. Her five points tilted innocently, her dark core pulsing with what might have been disappointment. Then she nodded rapidly, bobbing up and down like a child caught reaching for the cookie jar.

Gray stared at her for a long moment.

"Good."

He turned back toward the pool, his golden eyes tracing the shimmering surface.

"We need to figure out how to refine this. If we can turn it into a potion, it might be enough to push Cindy to Fifth Circle."

Cindy’s frills lifted with cautious hope.

"And maybe more than that," she said quietly. "If there’s enough essence here, we could all grow stronger."

They began to notice something else, the roots that coiled through the chamber were drawing from the pool, siphoning the Tartarus Essence like a nutrient, feeding it upward into the shell, into the forest, into everything above.

Cindy’s frills lowered as she studied the flow.

"That Carnivorous Bloom we fought," she said quietly. "It was probably just an ordinary plant before. Maybe a simple predator that lived in the moss. But this essence... it mutated it. Turned it into something far more dangerous." She paused, her silver eyes tracing the roots. "If the Bloom changed that much, what else has been drinking from this pool?"

Gray didn’t answer. He was already thinking the same thing.

Then the roar came.

GROOOOAAMMMM!!!

The sound tore through the chamber like a physical force, deep and resonant, vibrating through the roots and the moss and the very shell itself.

Gray’s eyes snapped wide.

"That wasn’t the Tartarus. Something else is down here."

Cindy pressed her hands against her container, her frills rigid.

"That sounded like a predator."

Gray extended his senses, his electroreception sweeping through the roots and the moss and the stone beneath. He could feel them now, faint electrical signatures moving through the tunnels below, converging on something. Dozens of them. Maybe more.

"There are creatures approaching," he said. "A lot of them. They’re not coming toward us, but they’re gathering somewhere."

Lily pulsed nervously beside him, her five points tightening their orbit.

Gray turned toward the chamber’s far wall, where another passage opened into darkness. The roar had come from that direction.

"We need to move," he said. "I want to see what’s down there."

Cindy’s frills stiffened.

"Are you insane? Something down there just declared itself the ruler of this place, and you want to go say hello?"

"I want to know what we’re dealing with," Gray said. "Before it finds us."

They moved through the passage together, Gray leading the way, Cindy’s container held against his chest, Lily drifting close behind. The tunnel twisted downward, the roots growing thicker, the light dimming with every step.

Then the passage opened into another chamber.

It was larger than the first. Larger than any chamber Gray had seen on the shell. Its walls were formed from ancient roots and fossilized bone, twisted together into something that looked almost architectural. And the floor was littered with remains.

Bones. Dozens of them. Some were animal, the ribs of large beasts, the skulls of fish, the shells of ancient crabs. Others were humanoid, shattered femurs, cracked skulls, fingers still clutching rusted weapons. And scattered among the bones were artifacts, rusted swords, dented shields, the tattered remains of robes and armor.

Cindy’s voice was barely a whisper.

"They must have been explorers."

Gray knelt beside one of the remains. A sword lay beside a shattered rib cage, its blade pitted and corroded, but still intact. The wound on the rib cage was clean, precise, like a bite from something with very sharp teeth.

"These aren’t old," he said quietly. "These wounds are recent. Something killed these people, and it wasn’t long ago."

Cindy’s frills lowered.

"So there have been other people who found the Tartarus before us."

"And none of them made it out," Gray finished.

Then he saw it.

A flicker of movement in the darkness. Something had darted between two root formations at the far edge of the chamber, its shape indistinct, its speed terrifying.

Gray’s hand shot up.

"Stay Alert."

Cindy stopped instantly, her silver eyes darting across the chamber.

"What did you see?"
