The ruined battlefield remained frozen in dead, terrifying silence. Millions of mutated Zerg lay completely motionless across the burning landscape, their heavy, obsidian-armored bodies pressed flat against the ash as they bowed toward the elevated command platform.

Not a single human soldier dared to move a muscle, their fingers frozen on their weapons. No academy instructor spoke a word, and even the high-decibel wailing of the emergency sirens seemed utterly insignificant beneath the suffocating pressure.

Rhaevia stared down at the kneeling Zerg Sovereign, her pale face a completely unreadable mask. Deep within her mind, however, her thoughts were racing at dangerous speeds.

My Queen?

The two raspy words continued to echo through the planetary mental network, vibrating through every living mind. Every Sentinel on the surface had heard the declaration, and every Guide had felt its staggering psychic weight. Every surviving cadet now knew that the most terrifying alien entity on Planet V-17 had just lowered its horned head before an allegedly useless academy student.

Major General Raevor Veyr slowly lowered his sharp rapier, his boots shifting slightly on the metal deck plates. His strict expression remained rigidly controlled, but the sharp tension in his dark eyes was unmistakable.

"Queen...?" a cadet whispered from behind the barricades, her voice trembling violently.

"She can’t possibly be a Zerg Queen," another student choked out, shaking his head in absolute denial. "She is a human noble daughter."

"She is an awakened 3S Guide!" an instructor added, clutching his throbbing temples.

"Then why on earth are millions of them bowing to her?" a noble boy cried out into the quiet air.

No one had an answer to give.

Rhaevia finally took a deliberate step toward the very edge of the command platform, looking down at the titan. "I am not your Queen," she declared, her clear voice carrying smoothly across the plain.

The giant Sovereign did not rise or shift its stance. "You are," its mental voice echoed back, heavy with absolute certainty.

"No," Rhaevia countered, her dark pupils flashing with a cold blue radiance. "I am Rhaevia Rythundeir. Human. Guide. Cadet of the Imperial Military Academy."

The Zerg Sovereign slowly raised its enormous, crowned head, its obsidian plates sliding with a metallic rasp. Its intelligent crimson eyes remained locked directly onto her soul.

"You speak merely of the physical identity you inhabit now," the creature rasped into their minds.

Rhaevia’s unbothered expression changed slightly, her brows drawing together. "Now?" she repeated softly.

A strange, incomprehensible pressure brushed gently against her Guide pathways. It was completely devoid of hostile intent, carrying a tone that was almost reverent.

The Sovereign continued its telepathic link, its voice echoing across the military district. "Your current physical vessel carries the biological blood of humanity."

Its enormous, blade-like claws pressed heavily against the fractured earth, cracking the stone. "But your underlying mental signature..."

The intricate crimson patterns unspooling across its obsidian armor began glowing with a blinding, pulsating light. "...is not human."

The entire command platform fell into a dead, breathlessness silence.

Raevor immediately turned his dark eyes to look down at Rhaevia. "What does it mean?" he demanded quietly.

The Sovereign answered the Major General without ever shifting its gaze toward him. "The neural signature of an ancient Sovereign exists deep within her mental core."

Rhaevia’s heart stopped for a full beat.

Ancient Sovereign.

The heavy words struck something buried deep inside her newly awakened 3S pathways. In a fraction of a second, vivid, terrifying images flashed rapidly across her vision.

She saw the smooth black crystal she had touched in the dirt. She saw the subterranean black metal of the ancient facility. She saw the pale creature suspended inside the freezing stasis pod. She heard the raspy voice that had whispered My Lord, and remembered the strange sensation she had experienced every time the Zerg swarms approached her.

It had never been fear. It was absolute, undeniable recognition.

But how is that possible? she questioned internally, her mind spinning. She had been human. She had lived her first life on Earth, fought through a gruesome apocalypse, become humanity’s final general, and killed the Zombie King with her own steel blade.

At least, that was what she had always believed.

Rhaevia slowly lifted her hand, pressing her fingers against her sternum. "Explain," she commanded the entity flatly.

The Sovereign lowered its horned head once more into the dirt. "Long before your young human civilization ever reached the stars, the Sovereign bloodline ruled the absolute hierarchy of the Zerg."

A collective, horrified gasp spread across the assembled cadet ranks.

"The Sovereigns possessed absolute mental authority over every swarm in the galaxy," the entity continued telepathically. "Their neural signatures were entirely unique. No ordinary human Guide could ever command or suppress us."

Rhaevia’s pale fingers curled into tight fists. "Then why can you recognize me?" she pressed.

"Because you carry one," the Sovereign rasped back.

Her breathing became shallow. "A Sovereign mental signature."

The smooth black crystal buried within her mental sea suddenly pulsed with blinding light. Once. Twice.

A sudden wave of completely unfamiliar, ancient memories briefly unspooled across her consciousness. She saw a vast black palace constructed of biological metal, millions of bowing alien creatures, and a blood-red moon floating above an alien sky. She saw a massive throne surrounded by towering organic structures, and someone standing atop the dais whose face she could not discern.

Rhaevia staggered backward half a step, her balance slipping.

Raevor’s long fingers immediately shot out, catching her upper arm to steady her frame. "Rhaevia," he called out sharply, his voice laced with concern.

She looked up into his dark eyes. For the very first time since the siege had begun, a rare flicker of genuine uncertainty appeared in her gaze. "I don’t understand," she whispered.

The Sovereign’s heavy voice entered her mind once more. "You clearly remember the ruined world where you fought the walking dead."

Rhaevia froze completely, her posture locking up. "You remember the King you slew," the entity added.

Her dark pupils contracted sharply. "How do you know about that?" she demanded, her tone dropping into a dangerous register.

The Zerg Sovereign slowly lifted its crowned head, its glowing crimson eyes burning brighter against the dark sky.

"Because the one you killed on that burning world..." the entity rasped, its mental voice shaking the atmosphere "...was not the true King."

Rhaevia’s blood ran completely cold.

Raevor’s grip tightened around her arm, his Sentinel instincts flaring as he felt her pulse spike. The entire military academy held its collective breath in the suffocating quiet.

And deep beneath the subterranean bedrock of Planet V-17, something unimaginably ancient slowly began to awaken in the absolute dark.
