The Trash Guide Awakens: The Youngest General's Hidden Wife
Chapter 57: A Different Kind of Protection
The dining hall gradually returned to normal after Major General Raevor Veyr delivered his final answer. Or, to be entirely accurate, everyone around the table simply pretended it had.
Rhaevia sat silently, staring down at her plate while the soft ambient hum of the flagship’s environmental systems filled the room. She could not stop thinking about those three words he had spoken with such quiet conviction.
"Whatever she chooses."
The formal dinner eventually concluded without further interrogation. Her three overprotective brothers dispersed into the adjacent tactical room, immediately launching into another round of hushed, intense discussions regarding the flagship’s security arrangements.
Her parents, recognizing the exhaustion lingering in their daughter’s eyes, retired early to their private quarters on the upper deck. Rhaevia lingered near the entrance of the grand hall. She waited patiently until the long corridor outside had emptied of staff and guards.
When the last footsteps faded into the hallway, she turned her head toward the officer standing near the doorway.
"General," Rhaevia called out softly, her tone laced with a serious edge.
Raevor stopped in his tracks and turned around to face her. His dark blue uniform remained impeccably sharp, his dark eyes looking at her with absolute calm.
"Yes?" he inquired, his deep voice carrying through the vacant corridor.
"We need to talk," she stated plainly, taking a small step toward him.
His stoic expression remained composed, though his eyes sharpened slightly. "About what?"
"About your idea of protection," Rhaevia answered, her eyes searching his face.
A faint, subtle crease appeared between his brows, the only outward sign of his surprise.
Rhaevia crossed her arms over her chest, stepping closer until only a few feet separated them. She held his gaze firmly, determined not to let him deflect.
"You cannot continue placing yourself directly between me and every high-level threat in this galaxy," she told him firmly.
"I can," Raevor replied immediately, without a single moment of hesitation.
"That is exactly the problem," she countered, shaking her head.
Raevor remained silent, studying her intently as she stepped even closer to him.
"You openly defied the Imperial High Command because of me," Rhaevia reminded him, her voice dropping to a low, intense whisper. "You sat at that table and told my family you would willingly accept losing your rank, your fleet authority, and even your personal freedom."
"I did," he admitted, his posture unwavering.
"Why?" she demanded, searching his stoic expression for the truth.
His answer came instantly, spoken with a level of matter-of-fact certainty that almost unnerved her. "Because I believe protecting you is necessary."
Rhaevia let out a soft, frustrated sigh, running a hand over her face.
"That is not what I am asking," she said, looking straight back into his dark eyes. "I do not want to become dependent on you, Raevor."
For the very first time since she had met him, something noticeable shifted in Raevor’s expression. A momentary flicker of emotion crossed his features before he reined it back in.
Rhaevia did not back down. She stood tall, drawing upon the instincts that had been forged long before she had ever stepped into this interstellar era.
"I survived an apocalypse long before I ever met you," Rhaevia said, her voice rising with a firm, unyielding strength. "I commanded entire armies across ruined lands. I made cold, calculated decisions that determined whether thousands of people lived or died."
She took one final step forward, her eyes flashing with a fierce, independent fire.
"I will not suddenly become someone who cowers behind a major general simply because my Guide rank has changed," she stated adamantly.
Raevor stood perfectly still, letting her words settle in the quiet hall. He absorbed her intensity without a hint of anger or offense. Then, he took a step toward her, closing the remaining distance between them.
"Protection does not make you weak, Rhaevia," Raevor said softly, his deep voice carrying a strange, reassuring warmth.
Rhaevia frowned slightly, tilting her head. "Then what does it make me?"
"Protected," he answered plainly.
His response was so utterly straightforward, so lacking in arrogance or hidden motives, that she was temporarily left speechless.
Raevor continued, his dark eyes never leaving hers. "There is a massive difference between depending on someone merely to survive and allowing someone to stand beside you on the battlefield."
Rhaevia’s eyes narrowed slightly, processing his words.
He extended his hand, gesturing toward her with a respectful gesture. "You do not need me to fight your battles for you."
Then, he brought his hand back, pressing his palm flat against his own chest, directly over his heart.
"But I can fight beside you," he added.
Something deep within Rhaevia’s chest stirred at his words. A strange warmth flared in her heart, catching her off guard.
"Beside me?" she repeated quietly.
"Yes," Raevor affirmed, his gaze remaining steady and unshakeable.
He paused for a brief moment, letting the weight of his next words sink in. "If you want to become stronger, I will not command you like a superior officer."
"Then what will you do?" she asked.
"I will train with you," he offered calmly.
Rhaevia blinked in surprise, looking at the legendary 3S Sentinel standing in front of her.
"You?" she asked, a hint of disbelief in her voice.
"Unless you would prefer someone else," Raevor replied, his tone remaining neutral.
A faint spark of challenge suddenly ignited in Rhaevia’s eyes. She looked him up and down, taking in his powerful build and disciplined posture.
"Are you sure about that, General?" she challenged, a subtle smirk playing on her lips.
"I would not have offered otherwise," Raevor responded evenly.
A small, genuine smile finally tugged at the corner of her lips. The tension that had been building inside her since dinner evaporated.
"Fine," she agreed.
Raevor gave a sharp, decisive nod. "Training room."
"Now?" she asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Now," he confirmed, turning toward the elevator bay.
Several minutes later, the two of them stood inside the flagship’s private, state-of-the-art combat chamber.
The enormous, cavernous room was reinforced with heavy, military-grade alloy plating. Its reinforced walls were specifically engineered to absorb the destructive shockwaves and elemental energy of high-level Sentinels and Guides.
Rhaevia stepped up onto the center of the reinforced training platform, rolling her shoulders to loosen her muscles.
Raevor stepped onto the platform opposite her, taking a balanced, grounded stance. Neither of them carried weapons, intending to rely on hand-to-hand combat and raw speed.
"What are the rules?" she asked, her eyes tracking his posture.
"No restrictions," Raevor answered calmly.
Rhaevia raised an eyebrow at his confidence. "You trust me that much?"
"I have already seen what you are capable of on the field," he replied smoothly.
A confident smile spread across Rhaevia’s face. "Good answer."
Without another word of warning, the training session began.
Rhaevia moved first. Her body accelerated forward with explosive speed, blurring across the metallic floor as she launched a sharp, lightning-fast strike toward his chest.
Raevor shifted his arm, raising his forearm to block her strike just in time.
BOOM!
The force of their physical impact echoed loudly through the chamber, sending a minor shockwave across the reinforced platform.
Without breaking her momentum, Rhaevia immediately twisted her body in mid-air, sweeping a swift heel kick directly toward his exposed ribs.
Raevor sidestepped smoothly, dodging the arc of her leg by a hair’s breadth.
She followed up instantly with a rapid succession of strikes, a palm thrust to his shoulder, a low strike to his core, and an elbow sweep aimed at his chin.
He blocked the first. He deflected the second. He leaned back to avoid the third.
Their movements rapidly escalated into a flurry of motion. Metal echoed under their heavy footsteps as they traded blows across the platform.
As the spar continued, Raevor quickly realized that Rhaevia’s combat style was unlike anything taught in the Imperial military academies. She did not adhere to standard forms or predictable martial patterns. She adapted effortlessly to every angle.
Every single time he subtly changed his rhythm to throw her off, she fluidly altered hers to match. Every time he attempted to read her posture and predict her next move, she shifted her attack vector halfway through her execution.
She is reading my movements in real time, Raevor recognized internally, a deep sense of respect washing over him.
His dark eyes narrowed, sharpening with intense focus as he raised his intensity.
Rhaevia immediately caught the subtle change in his eyes and grinned.
"Having trouble keeping up, General?" she teased mid-strike.
"No," Raevor replied stoically.
"You are thinking far too much," she pointed out, launching herself straight into his guard.
Raevor met her aggressive charge head-on, stepping into her range to counter.
Their internal energies flared simultaneously, colliding with a sudden, violent force. The entire combat chamber trembled beneath the sheer pressure of their combined power.
Rhaevia twisted her torso expertly, aiming to redirect his heavy momentum past her shoulder.
Raevor, anticipating the throw, instinctively adjusted his center of gravity to compensate.
For one brief, miraculous instant, their split-second reactions lined up perfectly. Their movements synchronized as if they were two halves of a single mind.
Her left hand lashed out in a precise strike, while his right hand moved to intercept and parry from the opposite direction.
Their hands crossed paths in the air toward the exact same target space.
Their bare skin touched.
The second her fingers made direct contact with his palm, an explosive, blinding pulse of sheer energy erupted violently between them.
BOOM!
The force of the kinetic shockwave blasted outward, rattling the alloy walls of the chamber. Both of them froze instantly in place, their combat stance locking up as if time itself had stopped.
Rhaevia’s eyes widened in sheer shock.
Raevor’s pupils sharply contracted.
A massive, overwhelming wave of resonance surged violently through their bodies, crashing through their mental pathways like a tidal wave.
Deep within her chest, her newly awakened Sovereign Guide core trembled uncontrollably, humming with immense energy.
Directly opposite her, Raevor’s powerful 3S Sentinel core reacted instantly, locking onto her frequency and echoing back with equal strength.
A semi-translucent, system notification window suddenly materialized in the air between their faces, glowing with bright cyan text:
[SENTINEL-GUIDE RESONANCE DETECTED.]
The numerical counter on the screen began to rapidly climb, ticking upward at a terrifying speed.
[12%...]
[19%...]
[26%...]
[33%...]
Rhaevia stared at the floating holographic system in absolute disbelief, her breath catching in her throat.
Then, with a final soft chime, the rapidly ascending numbers locked into place.
[CURRENT RESONANCE: 37%.]
Neither of them moved a single muscle. The silence inside the massive training chamber was deafening. Their hands remained firmly pressed together, skin touching skin as the residual energy hummed softly around their fingers.
Raevor slowly lowered his dark gaze, looking down at where his hand was intertwined with hers.
Rhaevia lifted her eyes, staring directly up into his face.
For several long, suffocating seconds, neither of them uttered a single word. Then, another faint, warm pulse of mental energy traveled smoothly across the connection between their cores, vibrating through her veins.
Rhaevia’s heart gave a sudden, rapid flutter, her pulse racing against her ribs. And in that quiet, breathless moment, she suddenly realized this sudden, overwhelming connection was only the beginning.
