Rhaevia opened her eyes, gasping as her mind detached from the blinding haze of the ancient vision. The command bridge of the flagship materialized back around her in agonizing fragments.

Red emergency lights bathed the steel deck in continuous crimson pulses, casting long, jagged shadows against the bulkheads.

Shattered holographic displays hissed with dying sparks, flickering uselessly overhead. Beyond the thick viewport, the distant, silent roar of the Black Armada loomed like an eternal shadow. And standing directly in front of her, anchoring her to the present, was Raevor.

His heavy hands gripped her shoulders with unyielding firmness, holding her steady as her knees buckled. Dark, intense eyes remained fixed on her pale face, searching for any sign of mental collapse.

"Rhaevia," he called, his voice low and raspy against the ambient hum of dying monitors.

She stared back at him, her chest heaving as air dragged painfully into her lungs. For several seconds, speech utterly failed her. His face in the physical world was identical to the one she had just seen across thousands of forgotten years.

It was the same dark, piercing gaze. The same sharp, uncompromising cut of his jawline. The same controlled, impenetrable expression that hid a violent storm of instinct.

It was the presence she had felt standing beside her on that ancient, blood-soaked battlefield. It was him. The realization struck her with the force of a kinetic strike, terrifying her to her core.

"No..." she whispered, pulling her breath inward as a cold shiver ran down her spine.

Raevor’s dark brows tightened instantly, feeling the wild, erratic spike in her mental resonance. "What did you see?"

Rhaevia swallowed hard, the taste of ozone dry on her tongue. "You."

His sharp expression shifted subtly, his eyes narrowing as he read her terror. "Me?"

"In the memory," she managed to say, her voice trembling despite her general’s pride. "The Sentinel standing beside the ancient Guide..."

Raevor remained silent, absorbing the raw emotion bleeding through their shared tether. Rhaevia attempted to step backward to create distance, but he did not release his grip on her shoulders until he was entirely certain her legs would hold her weight.

"He looked exactly like you," she said, her hands hovering near her chest.

A suffocating silence settled across the shattered command bridge. Around them, officers and navigation crew members deliberately stared at their offline consoles, pretending not to hear the conversation unfolding between their major general and the awakened guide.

Rhaevia lowered her eyes, staring at the dust-streaked fabric of his military uniform. "He spoke like you. He moved like you. Even the terrifying way he looked at me..."

She pressed a trembling palm flat against her sternum, trying to soothe the frantic pounding of her heart. "It was you."

Raevor’s gaze never wavered from her face. "Or someone who happened to look like me."

Rhaevia snapped her head up, her eyes flashing with sudden heat. "You don’t believe me?"

"I believe that you saw it," he replied, his tone remaining infuriatingly measured.

"That isn’t what I asked," she countered, her knuckles turning white.

Raevor stood motionless for a moment, reading the desperate search for truth in her eyes. Then, he bridged the small gap between them, stepping closer until his shadow enveloped her.

"I believe your memory." His voice was calm, serving as a solid anchor against her chaos. "But I don’t believe it has the right to decide who I am."

Rhaevia froze, the protest dying on her lips. The sheer conviction in his declaration stunned her into absolute stillness.

Raevor shifted his head slightly, glancing past her toward the viewport where space stretched out infinitely. The Black Armada remained motionless in the void, thousands of massive warships watching their flagship like patient predators.

"They told you we’ve met across countless lives," he stated, his voice carrying the authority of a fleet commander.

"Yes," she whispered.

"They showed you an ancient version of me fighting in a dead war," he continued.

"Yes."

"And now you’re wondering whether I am simply that same person reborn," he said, looking back down at her.

Rhaevia’s fingers tightened against her own sleeves. "Am I wrong to wonder?"

"No." His answer came without a second of hesitation. "You have every reason to wonder."

He reached down and gently took her hand, his thick gloved fingers closing securely around hers. The subtle heat of his skin bled through the material, grounding her surging Guide energy.

"The memories may tell us what happened in a forgotten era," he said, pausing as his dark eyes softened just enough for her to see. "They may even tell us who we were before the stars burned out."

He squeezed her hand gently. "But they don’t get to tell us who we have to become today."

Rhaevia stared at him, the weight of his words striking somewhere far deeper than her ancient fears. The logic was crisp, cold, and undeniably real.

"But what if you really were him?" She pressed softly.

"Then I was," he replied instantly.

"And what if you still carry that core inside you right now?"

Raevor’s expression remained entirely unbothered by the cosmic weight of the question. "Then I’ll deal with that when we have actual proof."

Rhaevia let out a breathless sound, almost laughing despite the dark tension surrounding them. "You’re remarkably calm about an ancient soul crisis."

"I’ve faced Zerg Sovereigns, rogue Imperial fleets, and armies capable of glassing entire planets," he replied smoothly. He cast a fleeting glance toward the endless swarm of enemy vessels waiting in the dark void. "This is merely another tactical problem."

She shook her head, a faint trace of her usual spirit returning. "That’s not what I meant, Major General."

"I know," he said. For the first time since the terminal exploded, a faint, almost imperceptible smile touched the corner of his lips.

Then, as quickly as it appeared, his expression shifted back into intense seriousness. He stepped closer, placing his second hand over hers so her palm was fully encased in his warmth.

"Listen to me, Rhaevia," he commanded softly.

She looked up, meeting his unyielding gaze.

"Whatever I was then, I am Raevor now," he stated. The words echoed through the silent command bridge like an oath written in steel.

Her heart tightened in her chest, pulsing with a sudden, overwhelming warmth.

He kept his eyes locked onto hers. "I don’t remember that ancient battlefield. I don’t remember that throne. I don’t remember fighting beside you across thousands of dead years."

His gloved thumb moved slowly, brushing lightly over her knuckles to soothe her remaining tremor.

"But I remember finding you on V-17," he continued, his voice dropping into a deeper, more intimate register. "I remember watching you stand taller when everyone else in the academy expected you to fall."

Rhaevia’s breath caught in her throat.

"I remember choosing to protect you," he said, his 3S Sentinel aura wrapping around her mental frame like a protective shield. "And I remember waiting for you when you told me you would choose me yourself."

The memory of the training deck flooded her mind. The crackle of high-frequency energy, the faint scent of rain, and their breath mingling in the narrow space between them. She remembered his promise floating in the dark: I’ll wait.

Those memories were clear. They were not ancient ghosts lingering in broken stone or sealed records. They were not dictated by an ancient Church prophecy or a Zerg Sovereign’s proclamation. They belonged to them.

Rhaevia slowly lowered her head, letting out a long, shuddering breath. "What if the ancient Sentinel really was you, buried under years of classified war?"

Raevor’s answer came without a fraction of a delay. "Then perhaps he was another version of me who lived his own life."

He took one final step forward, closing every millimeter of space between them.

"But I am not him," he whispered, his head bending slightly so only she could hear his words above the low thrum of the ship’s engines. "I am Raevor Veyr. And whatever happened before this life, I choose what happens now."

Something tight and painful inside Rhaevia’s chest finally unspooled.

For days, ever since the ancient energy formation had awakened beneath her feet, she had been terrified that every answer would strip away a piece of her identity.

She was terrified that her choices, her military career on Earth, and her present life were merely puppets dancing to an ancient script.

But Raevor was not asking her to surrender to fate. He was standing on the ruined bridge of a starship, surrounded by an enemy armada, choosing the present moment beside her. Just as she had always wanted.

A subtle chime sounded directly inside her neural field. Translucent blue text flickered across her vision, generated by the dormant ancient interface buried within her soul: 𝒻𝘳ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝒷𝘯ℴ𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝑐ℴ𝑚

[ANCIENT MEMORY: UNRESOLVED.]

[IDENTITY CORRELATION: 17%.]

[CURRENT SOUL SIGNATURE: RAEVOR VEYR.]

Rhaevia stared at the final line glowing brightly against the backdrop of space.

Then, slowly, the tension left her shoulders. Her lips curved upward, and she smiled.

It was not because she had finally unraveled the dark history of who Raevor had been thousands of years ago. It was because she had finally understood something infinitely more important.

She didn’t need to unravel the entire past today. She only needed to know the man standing in front of her right now, holding her hand against the void. And she knew exactly who he chose to be beside her.
