The Trash Guide Awakens: The Youngest General's Hidden Wife
Chapter 98: The King Was Protecting Her
Rhaevia’s lungs locked, refusing to draw in the cold, pressurized air of the command deck. The truth reverberated through every corner of her soul, breaking through the last barriers of her suppressed past.
It died so you could return.
For years, she had carried the weight of that final battlefield on Earth as a heroic triumph. She had believed that thrusting her weapon through the creature’s chest was the desperate act of salvation that saved humanity from extinction.
Now, every foundation of that memory crumbled into dust. The monstrous warlord she had hated was never her destroyer.
Raevor kept his hands anchored firmly around her trembling shoulders, his strong grip keeping her upright as the flagship’s artificial gravity worked beneath them. He searched her face, his dark eyes steady amidst her chaotic aura.
"Rhaevia," he called softly, bringing her back to the present.
She lifted her eyes to meet his, tears gathering at the edges of her vision. "I killed it," she whispered, her voice fracturing under the weight of immense guilt.
"I spent my entire second life believing I had executed my greatest enemy," she rasped, her hands clutching at her chest. "I thought I brought justice to a dead world."
Raevor’s expression remained unyielding, a solitary pillar of stability. "You fought with the truth you were given."
"The Sovereign Consciousness called it an ally," she insisted, her breathing coming in shallow, erratic gasps. "It stood before that celestial gate and took the blow for me."
"Yes," Raevor acknowledged, his posture taut. "It held the line."
Rhaevia closed her eyes, letting the tide of another buried fragment wash over her senses. The smell of the bridge dissolved into the acrid, metallic stench of burning ash and dry blood.
She stood once more in the shattered ruins of Earth’s final stronghold. Before her stood the colossal, terrifying form of the Zombie King, its obsidian armor slick with battle oil and dust.
Yet, looking through the lens of her awakened Sovereign consciousness, details she had once missed surfaced with terrifying clarity. The monster had possessed enough raw energy to tear her body apart in a single strike.
Its pressure had already shattered humanity’s line of defense, leaving every soldier around her dead or depleted. Her physical strength had been exhausted, her body hanging on by willpower.
The Zombie King had never unleashed its catastrophic power against her. Every swing of its massive claws had been defensive, calculated, and deliberate.
It had deliberately parried her strikes rather than crushing her frame. It had forced her back step by step, driving her across the ruined city toward a specific coordinate.
Rhaevia’s eyes snapped open in the present, her breath catching in her throat. "It was guiding me."
Raevor’s posture sharpened, his attention locked onto her every word. "Toward what?"
"Toward the heart of the battlefield where I struck the final blow," she said, horror creeping into her tone. "I believed it was trapping me in a corner."
Another fragment of the memory flashed behind her eyelids, sharp as broken glass. She saw the creature’s massive claw slam into the concrete beside her feet, sending up a screen of dust that shielded her from a distant sniper line.
Every terrifying leap it made had nudged her closer to the center of the ruined metropolis. Beneath those shattered streets lay the faint, hidden power of a formation buried deep within the earth.
"It wasn’t trying to end my life," Rhaevia breathed, her fingers twisting into the fabric of Raevor’s uniform. "It was forcing me onto the activation grid."
Raevor stared at her, his jaw tightening as the reality settled in. "Why go through such an elaborate deception?"
"Because I wouldn’t have understood," she whispered, the realization bitter on her tongue. "If it had approached me as a friend, I would have fought it off or fled."
"You had to view it as the ultimate threat to reach that precise spot," Raevor concluded softly.
"I had to drive my blade into its core," Rhaevia agreed, her voice barely audible over the noise of the ship’s engines. "And in doing so, I triggered my death."
The scope of the sacrifice hung between them, heavy and suffocating. Her Sovereign soul had been trapped, burdened by shattered authority and endless conflict across star systems.
Her power needed to be stripped away, and her identity needed to be cast into the void of the reincarnation cycle. Death on that ruined planet had been the only key capable of unlocking the gate to her rebirth.
Rhaevia turned her head toward the reinforced observation window, looking down at the Imperial Capital. Thousands of feet below, the metropolis pulsed with light as planetary grids resonated with her aura.
"My death wasn’t a failure of humanity," she murmured, tears spilling over her lashes. "It was the final step of a master plan."
Raevor stepped closer, his shadow falling over her as he blocked out the light of the stars. "Then what was that entire war?"
"It was a staging ground," she answered. "A sanctuary built to keep me alive until the true cycle could begin."
A silence descended upon the bridge, broken only by the chime of automated systems monitoring the ship’s trajectory. Rhaevia remembered the Zombie King’s golden eyes as her sword pierced its chest.
There had been no fury in those glowing orbs, no desperation or hatred as its massive body collapsed onto the broken stone. There had only been a deep, serene sense of quiet relief.
She had mistaken that peace for the exhaustion of a dying monster. Now, she understood it was the acceptance of a guardian whose long, tragic watch had finally ended.
"It knew I would return to this era," Rhaevia choked out, wiping her wet cheeks with the back of her hand. "It knew the True King was waiting on the other side of the void."
Raevor’s voice dropped into a low resonance. "The Zombie King died to complete your reincarnation sequence."
"And it made sure I hated it enough to carry out the execution," she whispered, her heart breaking for the creature she had once despised.
She had carried the phantom of that kill for years, taking pride in slaying a nightmare. In truth, that nightmare had been a loyal shield, accepting the hatred of an entire world just to keep her soul safe.
Rhaevia pressed her trembling palm against her chest, feeling the living pulse beneath her ribs. "How many truths about my past are inverted?"
Raevor did not answer, his presence offering the only comfort he could give. There were no words in any human language that could soften the weight of such an ancient debt.
Suddenly, the command deck’s main console emitted a chime that cut through the silence. The holographic display before them flared with blue light.
[MEMORY CONVERGENCE: FINAL STAGE.]
Both of them froze, their eyes locking onto the glowing glyphs hovering in the center of the room. The system interface shuddered violently as new lines of ancient code generated across the screen.
[FINAL MEMORY FRAGMENT DETECTED.]
Rhaevia felt her heart slam against her ribs, the air growing cold around her. "Final..."
The system interface flashed rapidly, displaying a crimson warning box that pulsed like a heartbeat.
[WARNING: THIS MEMORY WAS SEALED BY SOVEREIGN AUTHORITY.]
Her blood ran cold at the sight of her seal. The power required to lock a memory behind Sovereign authority was absolute, meant to hide a truth from the entire universe.
Raevor immediately extended his hand, his fingers weaving firmly through hers to anchor her consciousness. "Do you want to see it?"
Rhaevia stared at the glowing prompt, feeling the phantom weight of countless lifetimes resting upon her shoulders. Every fragment she had unlocked had torn away another piece of her assumed reality.
Yet, turning away now would mean living as a ghost in a history written by others. She squeezed Raevor’s hand tightly, leaning into his strength.
"Yes," she commanded clearly. "Open it."
The system interface flashed with a blinding, golden light that swallowed the bridge whole. The physical space of the flagship vanished, taking the metal decks and starry horizon with it.
The battlefield of Earth did not appear, nor did the burning ruins of the city or the kneeling form of the Zombie King. Instead, Rhaevia found herself suspended in an infinite vacuum of crystalline void.
She was looking through the eyes of her dying past self, moments after her blade had pierced the Zombie King’s core. Her vision was fading fast, dark shadows creeping inward from the edges of her sight.
Yet, she was not alone in that space between life and death. Standing directly behind her collapsing body was a tall, imposing shadow wrapped in silver light.
Rhaevia’s eyes widened as the figure stepped forward, reaching out a hand to catch her falling soul. The face obscured beneath the starlight belonged to the one person who should have been an enemy.
It was the True King, watching over her final breath with gentle, ancient eyes.
