Chapter 1190: Chapter 1217: Already Good Enough (4)
Camden River and Tong Tong walked over.
Seeing that the River Family’s parents both stood up to greet her, Tong Tong bit her lip and said, "Dad, Mom."
"Mm." Troy River smiled in contentment. "Your mom’s already tidied up the room. It’s getting late; go upstairs, wash up and rest early. If you need anything, just say so, don’t stand on ceremony."
Tong Tong froze for a moment and, a little ill at ease, said to Chloe Smith, "Sorry to trouble you."
"It’s no trouble, no trouble at all." Chloe Smith waved her hand and shot a look at Camden River. "You’ve both been running around all day, take Tong Tong upstairs to rest."
"You two turn in early as well." Camden River nodded.
After chatting for a bit downstairs, he took Tong Tong back to the room.
The room had clearly been tidied up; the sheets and duvet cover had all been changed to brand-new, spotless ones. There was even a vase with open flowers on the corner cabinet, a faint fragrance curling through the room. When their gazes fell on the bed, Tong Tong’s expression stalled even more.
Chloe Smith had even prepared pajamas for her. Thankfully, it was a very normal, conservative two-piece set.
Camden River raised his hand and rubbed at the space between his brows.
He’d actually been struggling a lot these last few hours.
Mental preparation was one thing; when it really came to this moment, it was something else entirely.
What he felt for Tong Tong wasn’t love; he thought they could slowly cultivate feelings, and he would treat her well.
But—
To just go ahead and sleep with her like this, he still felt it wasn’t right.
"You go shower first." Camden River turned his head to glance at Tong Tong and said with a faint smile, "We’ve been on the road all day. Wash up and rest early."
His tone was calm, and Tong Tong really couldn’t read him.
Her body felt sticky and uncomfortable; being jostled around on the bus like that had already been hard enough on the both of them.
She didn’t refuse, took the pajamas into the bathroom, and instinctively locked the door from the inside.
If Camden River felt it wasn’t proper, then all the more so for her.
Outside the door—
Camden River heard the sound of running water.
He stood there, dazed, for a long time before lifting his feet and going out to the balcony for a smoke.
He was wearing a smoke-gray sweater and black trousers. He hadn’t turned on the light and stood in the cold, clear moonlight, his whole figure seeming silent and distant. Only the brief flicker at his fingertips showed that there was someone standing on the balcony.
He smoked several cigarettes in a row, still unable to sort his thoughts out. He’d made up his mind to treat Tong Tong well, to shoulder his responsibilities as a husband—this kind of thing was, of course, necessary. But if he didn’t show any initiative, would Tong Tong end up feeling hurt?
Her feelings for him were so deep; every attitude he took would have a big impact on her.
Camden River was in a real bind.
He kept turning it over in his mind until he heard a small voice behind him: "I’m done."
Camden River stubbed out his cigarette and turned to look.
Tong Tong had changed into the pajamas and stood in the room a couple of steps away, her hair loose around her shoulders. She clearly looked a little nervous and ill at ease, and when she seemed to notice the cigarette between his fingers, she ended up not saying anything for the moment.
