The Ultimate Regressor System

Chapter 123: Broken House

The coin landed heads-up in Darian's palm, and something in his exhausted expression sharpened instantly, the calculation behind his eyes shifting gears entirely.

"Heads means I get to keep playing," he said, already moving. "Let's see how much I've got left to bet."

He looked at how much stamina he had left.

Then he smiled.

"Time to go all in."

[Skill Activated: Dead Man's Wager.]

[Wager Amount: 90%.]

A ripple of translucent light gathered around him, and Eleanor felt the air itself thicken with tension, the same crackling anticipation that preceded every gamble she'd watched him make since the moment they'd met.

"NINETY PERCENT! Are you insane?!" Eleanor's voice cracked with alarm. "Darian, if that fails—"

"Then I'm nearly out of gas and we improvise," Darian said, entirely too calm for a man about to bet almost everything he had left. "But it won't fail. It never does."

Ashmaw watched the exchange with open and delighted curiosity, wings settling, head tilting. "How charming. A gambler among mortals. I do wonder what strange little god decided to hand that particular fragment to someone so recklessly confident."

"You'd be surprised how well recklessness pairs with confidence," Darian said, and lunged.

[The House has accepted your wager.]

[Rolling the dice...]

The words hung bright and stark in his vision, and Darian closed the distance with speed that shouldn't have been possible for a body already running on fumes, blade materializing fresh in his outstretched hand, translucent energy wrapping tight around the steel.

**CHING**

**BOOM**

Ashmaw met the charge with a raised claw, almost lazy in its confidence, clearly expecting to swat the strike aside the way it had swatted aside everything else so far.

[Rolling...]

The claw connected with Darian's blade, and for one suspended, agonizing second, neither of them moved, the outcome still hanging unresolved in whatever cosmic ledger tracked such things.

[JACKPOT.]

[Congratulations. You've broken the house.]

The whole place erupted in a pool of light, that same light then exploded around Darian's blade, blinding and absolute, and the impact that followed didn't simply push through Ashmaw's guard, it obliterated it entirely, the claw meant to casually deflect the strike shattering apart like brittle glass under a force that had no business belonging to a single mortal swing.

"WHAT?!" Ashmaw's layered voices cracked in unison, genuine shock finally breaking through its earlier calm.

"Arggh!!" It shrieked in pain.

Darian's blade drove clean through the creature's exposed chest, past scales that had shrugged off Eleanor's combined elemental assault only minutes earlier, sinking deep with a force that sent shockwaves rippling visibly through the air around the point of impact.

[Ding!]

[JACKPOT EFFECT: Massive damage amplification.]

The wound exploded in a torrent of blood.

[JACKPOT EFFECT: Guaranteed critical strike.]

He struck the blade, and Ashmaw who was sure that he dodged, felt the blade tear into its sides.

It shrieked again and Darian's system flared one more time.

[JACKPOT EFFECT: Defense penetration.]

Ashmaw brought it's hand upwards to block, it's wings falling in front but its eyes widened as Darian's blade tore through its arms and wings and stabbed it in its chest.

Ashmaw shrieked, a sound that cracked stone across the ruined courtyard, staggering backward with a wound blooming wide and catastrophic across its chest, crimson scales cracking and splitting outward from the point of impact like a spiderweb given violent, sudden motion.

"That's not—" the creature managed, disbelief bleeding through every layered tone at once. "That's not *possible*, I am a DEVIL, mortal weapons do not—"

"Funny thing about odds," Darian said, wrenching the blade free and stepping back to reset his stance, energy still crackling faint along the steel. "They don't actually care what you think should be possible."

[JACKPOT EFFECT: Stamina refund — Partial.]

Some fraction of his spent strength flooded back into him, not the full ninety percent he'd wagered but enough to steady his stance, enough to keep him upright despite the earlier exhaustion still dragging at his limbs.

Eleanor didn't wait for an invitation. She surged forward the instant Darian created the opening, flame roaring bright around her blade, driving it deep into the same catastrophic wound already splitting the creature's chest wide open.

"TOGETHER—" she shouted.

[JACKPOT EFFECT: Chance to trigger additional jackpot effects.]

[Triggered.]

[JACKPOT EFFECT: Temporary increase to Luck.]

Darian felt something shift subtly around him, an almost tangible sense of fortune bending further in his favor, and he pressed the advantage instantly, driving his blade back into the widening wound alongside Eleanor's flame, both of them tearing into a creature that had, only minutes ago, seemed utterly, contemptuously untouchable.

Ashmaw thrashed, wings beating uselessly against the ground, its layered voices climbing into something desperate, fractured, no longer amused at all.

"Wait—" it managed, "WAIT, we could—"

"You had your speech already," Darian said, and drove the blade home one final time, straight through what remained of the creature's chest, twisting hard.

The Devil's shriek cut off entirely.

Its enormous form convulsed once, twice, wings finally going still, and then it collapsed backward into the ruined courtyard with a heavy, absolute finality, crimson scales already beginning to crack and crumble at the edges like ash catching wind.

Silence fell over the compound, broken only by the distant, scattered sounds of survivors slowly emerging from whatever shelter they'd found during the chaos.

Darian sank to one knee beside the fallen creature, blade dissolving from his grip, chest heaving with exhaustion that the partial refund hadn't fully erased.

"Never lost," he said, breathless, a tired, satisfied grin spreading across his blood-streaked face. "Might've come closer than I'd like to admit this time, though."

Eleanor collapsed onto the ground beside him, her own flame finally extinguishing, staring at the crumbling remains of the Devil with something between disbelief and exhausted relief.

"That was a ninety percent wager," she said. "You could have died."

"Could have," Darian agreed. "Didn't." He glanced sideways at her, something almost fond beneath the exhaustion. "Story of my whole life, honestly."
