The wooden door of the Doomsday Tavern slowly creaked open. The figure who stepped out was not Jin Chang and Xi Yue, as Gu Su had expected, but a Death Knight who had been exploring with Jin Chang.
A faint aura of death clung to him, and his armor was stained with dust and strange black blemishes. He had clearly just come from a battle, and his steps were hurried.
The moment he saw the visitor, a clear look of surprise flashed across Gu Su’s face. His previously relaxed expression tensed slightly, and he instinctively asked, "What’s going on?
Why are you here? Where are Jin Chang and Xi Yue?"
He had assumed that, just like before, whoever teleported back using the Furnace Stone would be the leader of a team returning to rest after a battle went wrong. He hadn’t expected a lone Death Knight to arrive by himself.
Hearing Gu Su’s question, the Death Knight was visibly taken aback, clearly not expecting Gu Su to be so direct.
After a moment’s pause, his brow smoothed, and a slightly strained smile appeared on his face. He began to respond, "Mr. Gu, it was something of an accident. Over on our side..."
He trailed off, his words stopping abruptly as a flicker of excitement crossed his eyes.
It was as if he had suddenly remembered something important. An unconcealable excitement flashed across his previously calm face, and the explanation on the tip of his tongue took a sharp turn as his tone grew urgent.
"Mr. Gu, forget the accident. We actually came here this time because there’s something we need your help with."
Gu Su’s confusion deepened. He raised an eyebrow slightly, his tone investigative. "Oh? What happened?
Did Jin Chang and the others run into trouble out there and can’t get away?"
He subconsciously assumed that the man’s sudden appearance to ask for help meant they had encountered a formidable foe or were trapped in some kind of predicament.
Or perhaps they stumbled upon a dungeon that their team couldn’t handle alone, so they needed to come back for reinforcements.
"It’s not that we ran into trouble. On the contrary, we’ve finalized an important plan with a faction of Deceivers..."
The Death Knight quickly shook his head, his voice still tinged with lingering excitement. He then began to slowly explain the whole story to Gu Su in detail.
It turned out that ever since Jin Chang and his team got the intel from Gu Su about the native Deceivers hiding in the abandoned manor, they had immediately adjusted their exploration plans.
As veteran players, they understood the importance of native Deceivers in this Game World and knew how to leverage the power of Deceiver factions to strengthen themselves.
During the time Gu Su was roaming around with his Graveyard Demon, devouring hidden locations and trading with other Deceitful Manors, Jin Chang and his group had barely rested. They had been constantly searching the wastelands of the Koba Region for hidden native Deceiver factions.
They won over these Deceiver factions through normal trade and by completing various tasks for them.
Originally, their plan was simply to befriend them to make it easier to operate in this land. It would have been even better if they could find a few guides to help them enter the Inverted Tower.
But they never expected to eventually encounter a sizable Deceiver faction—the Grass Thorn.
To gain the trust and favor of the Grass Thorn faction, Jin Chang and his team proactively accepted several prerequisite quests they issued. Overcoming all obstacles, they successfully completed every commission, raising their affinity to a cooperative level.
It was at this point that the Grass Thorn faction extended an olive branch, giving them a mission of great importance.
Apparently, the Grass Thorn Deceivers could no longer tolerate the oppression of Wisconsin and the eerie rule of the Inverted Tower. They planned to gather all their forces and attack a town in the Koba Region.
Once they successfully captured the town, they would use it as their base to officially raise the banner of rebellion against Wisconsin and the Inverted Tower, completely breaking free from their fate of oppression.
Listening to the Death Knight’s account, Gu Su nodded slightly. Things started to fall into place, and he instantly understood the key points.
’This must be because Jin Chang and his team successfully completed the prerequisite quests for the Grass Thorn faction,’ he mused. ’Their strength showed the Grass Thorn Deceivers a glimmer of hope for resistance, which is why this hidden faction of Deceivers dared to step forward and openly challenge the eerie rule in the Koba Region and the forces of Wisconsin.’
Gu Su knew that if it had been any other sizable Deceiver faction, they too would have likely chosen this path, provided they had the help of veteran players like Jin Chang and could see a chance of successful rebellion.
After all, no Deceiver wanted to be eternally oppressed and enslaved. Everyone longed for their own territory and freedom.
Most importantly, the Deceivers’ very lives were under threat from the supernatural.
If they didn’t resist, they could only wait for death.
Since death was inevitable either way, they were surely willing to risk it all now that they had help.
But right now, the success or failure of this endeavor hinged on one crucial factor.
Did the Grass Thorn Deceivers actually have enough strength to successfully capture their chosen town?
More importantly, after taking the town, could they withstand the frenzied counterattack from the forces of Wisconsin and the Inverted Tower and hold their ground?
If the Grass Thorn faction wasn’t strong enough and couldn’t even breach the town’s defenses, or if they took it but couldn’t hold it, their efforts would all be for naught. In that case, this would just be an insignificant side quest, incapable of affecting the overall situation in the Koba Region or providing any real help to the players.
But if the Grass Thorn faction successfully captured the town, withstood the subsequent counterattacks, and secured firm control over it, then that town would become a new hub for the players in this Game World—a new springboard.
At that point, more and more players would follow the clues and pathways leading from the town into this Game World. They would put down roots in the Koba Region, wage their wars, and completely change the current situation.
It was precisely because of the immense impact of this matter that Jin Chang and his team took it so seriously. The moment they accepted the quest from the Grass Thorn faction, they immediately sent this Death Knight back via the Furnace Stone.
According to the Death Knight’s original plan, he was going to use the Doomsday Tavern’s teleportation function to log out of the game and report this matter directly to Li Li, seeking more support and instructions.
But after being questioned by Gu Su just now, a new idea had suddenly sparked in the Death Knight’s mind.
Gu Su’s Graveyard Demon had developed quite well recently. Not only had its territory steadily expanded, but it also commanded a considerable number of core Undead combat units. Its power was not to be underestimated.
If he could persuade Gu Su to get involved and use the Graveyard Demon’s power to help the Grass Thorn faction take the town, then perhaps their group could monopolize the immense credit for this achievement without having to share it with other players.
