Chapter 304: Sophie’s Admission [1]
Arriving before Nemur’s office, I stood silently before raising my hand to grab the door’s handle.
Click.
Opening the lock, I pushed open the door, only to be greeted by the same boring room as usual.
My sudden change in personality during our first conversation might have raised suspicions in Nemur’s mind, but that wouldn’t be the case this time.
Kael’s words had now become a lot more similar to mine, though his train of thought was still a lot more underdeveloped than mine.
"You never have the habit of knocking, do you?"
Sitting on his usual chair across the table between us, Nemur observed me with his hands under his chin.
"You should attach a signboard for it, if that is what you are worried about."
Making myself comfortable on the chair, I crossed my legs before meeting Nemur’s gaze.
"I hope you will try to reduce these visits to my office, as I have many things to do. Entertaining a kid isn’t something that I can dedicate my time to."
Placing his hands on the table, Nemur interlocked his fingers as his lips stretched into a warm smile, despite his words having no traces of warmth in them.
"Three or maybe four."
"..."
"That’s the number of times I might have visited this place. Given your Immortality... what do you even lose from it?"
I didn’t exactly remember, but I may have visited Nemur only a couple of times.
"So, what is it?"
Nemur sighed as he leaned back in his chair.
"Be quick with it."
Nemur seemed kind of impatient today.
Something serious might have happened for him to talk this way, but I wasn’t one to care about it.
"I have a friend of mine who wants to study here."
Nemur raised his brow in question, prompting me to speak further.
"She is an orphan but a talented one. I hope she can study with me in the same year."
There was a long silence as my words were met with a simple staring contest by Nemur, who just observed me in silence.
"What is her name?"
"Sophie."
My reply was quick.
There was no need to hide her name, though the identity of an orphan was to remove the possibility of any follow-up questions.
"Don’t mistake having me as your guardian would allow you to do whatever you please. This academy is based on certain principles and rules, and I can’t bend them for you."
Nemur’s tone stayed the same as usual, though I could feel a hint of disappointment in it.
"You don’t have to necessarily bend them."
"Hm?"
Nemur raised his brow in question before leaning on the table.
"The headmaster of Namda had come across a talent in the slums and taken her under his shelter, even going as far as to break the rules of admission to the Namda Academy that had been formed by him."
"..."
"A perfect headline for the news, isn’t it?"
There was a silence between us as Nemur thought over my words.
"We had made a deal."
Nemur’s voice was low yet firm, making me lean on the table to hear what he was saying.
"I think I am the only one who has been following my end of the deal. You still haven’t provided me with anything that could possibly help me elevate the level of my mana control. Care to speak on that?"
Honestly, I had expected Nemur to bring up this topic, as it was the truth.
Nemur had been providing Kael with whatever the latter had asked for, but in return, Kael hadn’t contributed anything of value.
"Are you sure you are following your end of the deal?"
"..."
My question was met with Nemur’s gaze that seemed to pierce through my very soul.
He wasn’t trying to intimidate me, but had it been someone else in my shoes, it was a given that they would have been scared at the moment.
"You had agreed to be my guardian, but until now, you haven’t really provided me with any way to contact you if I was indeed in some real danger. What if I was at death’s door waiting for help? How would you even save me at such a time?"
Nemur was a Sovereign and someone who had agreed to be Kael’s guardian.
Having a way to summon him, similar to how I could summon Arthur, would be a good backup for me.
And the presence of the parasite in Diana made it all the more necessary to ask for.
Why should I battle the Gods if I had the option to summon one?
"At the moment, you are sitting here right in front of me with no injuries whatsoever. And there had been no incident that had put you at death’s door, so logically speaking... there had never been a need to contact me—"
"How about giving me a way to contact you?"
I interrupted Nemur before he could win the war of words.
For some reason, I felt like I wasn’t in my best state of mind today.
My edge seemed to have dulled.
Had Kael’s soul begun to influence me?
That was an outcome I didn’t wish to see.
Nemur didn’t reply as he sat in his seat without moving an inch.
But the silence didn’t last long as Nemur took out a small metal plate out of thin air and began to scribble something on it.
Not interrupting him, I chose to wait in silence.
"Touch it."
After waiting for a couple of seconds, Nemur passed the metallic plate toward me.
I just observed the plate in silence before looking at Nemur.
I knew what he wanted to achieve, but—
"Your touch will help it link to me, and I can’t spy through it if that is what you are worried about. I will be keeping this with me, so rest assured or just forget about it—"
My hand moved as I quickly touched the plate, making Nemur pause at the end.
The moment my hand touched the surface of the metal, I felt a chilling sensation before the plate began to shine brightly.
