Chapter 123: Chapter 123: For the Best

The summons arrived shortly before noon.

Adrian stared at it for several moments.

Then folded the document.

Carefully.

Neatly.

As though delaying the inevitable by a few seconds.

His father wished to see him.

Again.

There was no reason given.

None was necessary.

Adrian already knew.

The audience with Duke Valmort had ended.

His father had reached a conclusion.

The only question remaining was whether Adrian would like it.

He already knew the answer.

The Emperor dismissed everyone when Adrian arrived.

The servants.

The attendants.

The guards stationed inside the study.

One by one, they left.

Until only two people remained.

Father and son.

The Emperor stood beside the window.

Looking out over the capital.

For a long moment, neither spoke.

Adrian waited.

The Emperor eventually turned.

And suddenly Adrian understood something.

His father looked tired.

Not physically.

Something else.

A deeper exhaustion.

The kind that came from making decisions one wished had never become necessary.

The realization did not comfort him.

If anything, it made him uneasy.

"Sit."

Adrian obeyed.

The Emperor remained standing.

For several moments, silence lingered.

Then finally—

"I met with Duke Valmort."

Adrian nodded.

"I assumed as much."

The Emperor studied him.

Carefully.

The composure.

The control.

The calm expression.

All familiar.

All learned.

Some of it learned from him.

"Do you know what he asked of me?"

"I can guess."

The Emperor almost smiled.

Almost.

"Then save us both some time."

Adrian’s jaw tightened slightly.

Barely noticeable.

"Marian’s release."

The Emperor nodded.

"Yes."

Silence followed.

Neither pretended otherwise.

Neither danced around the truth.

The Emperor appreciated that.

"And?"

Adrian finally asked.

The question was calm.

Too calm.

The Emperor noticed.

Of course he did.

He had raised him.

"And I listened."

A pause.

"I listened very carefully."

Another.

"To him."

The Emperor’s gaze sharpened.

"And to you."

The room grew quiet.

Adrian looked away first.

Toward the bookshelves.

Toward anywhere except his father’s eyes.

Because suddenly he knew where this conversation was going.

And he did not wish to hear it.

The Emperor folded his arms.

"Adrian."

The Crown Prince remained silent.

"Look at me."

Slowly.

Reluctantly.

Adrian obeyed.

The Emperor held his gaze.

Steady.

Firm.

Not as Emperor.

As father.

"I understand."

The words landed softly.

Unexpectedly.

Adrian blinked.

"I understand why you’re angry."

A pause.

"I understand why you’re hurt."

Another.

"I understand why you don’t want to let her go."

The room felt very quiet.

For a moment, Adrian almost laughed.

Because that was the problem.

His father understood.

And still—

The Emperor continued.

"Your feelings are real."

No dismissal.

No judgment.

No criticism.

Just acknowledgment.

"You loved her."

The words struck harder than expected.

Because nobody ever said it aloud.

Not really.

Not like this.

The Emperor’s voice softened.

"And she mattered."

Another pause.

"She still matters."

Something tightened painfully in Adrian’s chest.

Then the Emperor sighed.

And Adrian knew.

Before a single word was spoken.

He knew.

"She does not want you."

The room went still.

The words were brutal.

Simple.

Merciless.

Adrian’s jaw clenched.

The Emperor continued.

Not because he enjoyed it.

Because it needed to be said.

"She loves another man."

Silence.

"She asked to leave."

Silence.

"What more do you need to hear?"

The question lingered.

Heavy.

Impossible.

Adrian looked away.

Again.

His hands tightened once.

Then relaxed.

The Emperor waited.

Patiently.

Finally—

"I know."

The answer was quiet.

The Emperor stared.

"I know all of that."

Adrian’s voice remained steady.

Controlled.

Almost emotionless.

The Emperor frowned.

Slightly.

"Then why?"

For the first time, frustration entered his voice.

Not anger.

Frustration.

The frustration of a father watching his son walk willingly toward pain.

"You know."

The Emperor took a step forward.

"You understand."

Another.

"You are not a child."

Another.

"So why are we still having this conversation?"

The question struck through the room like a blade.

Silence.

Long.

Heavy.

The Emperor waited.

Adrian lowered his gaze.

For several moments, he said nothing.

Nothing at all.

Then finally—

"Because I don’t want to let her go."

The words barely rose above a whisper.

Yet somehow they echoed louder than anything else.

The Emperor closed his eyes.

Briefly.

Painfully.

Because there it was.

The truth.

Not politics.

Not logic.

Not pride.

Not entitlement.

Just grief.

When he opened his eyes again, his decision remained unchanged.

"Adrian."

His voice softened.

"I know what is best for you."

The Crown Prince laughed.

Once.

Without humor.

The sound hurt far more than shouting would have.

"You think so."

The Emperor’s expression hardened.

Not with anger.

With certainty.

"Yes."

The answer came immediately.

Without hesitation.

"One day you may hate me for it."

A pause.

"Perhaps you already do."

Adrian said nothing.

The Emperor continued.

"But I will not help you chain yourself to a woman who wishes to leave."

Silence.

Absolute.

"My son deserves better."

Adrian looked at him.

Finally.

Directly.

For the first time, emotion appeared.

Raw.

Unhidden.

Painful.

"I don’t want better."

The room fell silent.

The Emperor stared.

And suddenly he understood.

Completely.

Adrian already knew every argument.

Every reason.

Every conclusion.

He simply did not care.

Because none of them solved the actual problem.

The Emperor felt something inside him sink.

Slowly.

Heavily.

There was nothing left to say.

Nothing left to explain.

Nothing left to convince.

Only a decision.

The Emperor exhaled slowly.

Then spoke.

Quietly.

"I am sorry."

For the first time, uncertainty crossed Adrian’s face.

Then the Emperor delivered the verdict.

"I will not help you keep her."

Silence.

Absolute.

The words hung between them.

Sharp as a blade.

Final as a sentence.

The Emperor waited.

Expecting anger.

A protest.

Something.

Anything.

Instead—

Adrian simply stood.

Quietly.

The silence unsettled him far more than shouting would have.

"Adrian."

The Crown Prince lifted his eyes.

And for the first time in twenty-one years, the Emperor saw something he had never seen before.

Distance.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Distance.

The realization struck harder than expected.

"Son—"

"I understand."

The interruption was polite.

Perfectly respectful.

Exactly as Adrian had been taught.

Which somehow made it worse.

"I understand your position, Father."

The title lingered between them.

Formal.

Careful.

Wrong.

The Emperor felt something cold settle in his chest.

Because Adrian was obeying.

Exactly as expected.

Exactly as feared.

Then Adrian bowed.

Perfectly.

A Crown Prince’s bow.

Not a son’s.

He straightened.

Turned.

And walked toward the door.

The Emperor watched him go.

Unable to stop him.

Unwilling to call him back.

The doors closed softly behind him.

The sound echoed through the room.

The Emperor remained standing.

Staring at the empty doorway.

For a very long time.

Suddenly uncertain whether he had just protected his son—

Or lost him.
