Chapter 315: v4 Chapter 16: the arrival I

The Milician delegation came into view.

Adrian watched from inside the carriage as the distant formation approached along the cleared avenue.

The Milician banners appeared first.

Then the cavalry.

Then the long procession of carriages and riders that followed.

Nearly one hundred and seventy people.

A considerable delegation for a kingdom that had come seeking peace.

The carriage door opened.

"Your Majesty."

Adrian stepped outside.

The morning air was cool, and the early sunlight caught along the pale ivory of his formal riding coat.

His ceremonial horse was brought forward.

Adrian mounted.

Around him, the Imperial Guard took their positions.

The officials of the court straightened.

The Foreign Minister stepped forward.

"The delegation is approaching, Your Majesty."

Adrian looked ahead.

"I can see them."

The Milician formation continued toward the gates.

At its center, the royal carriage advanced beneath the Milician standard.

Then the formation began to slow.

The carriage stopped.

For a moment, nothing moved.

Then the door opened.

King Lorenz of Milicia emerged.

He was twenty-seven, two years younger than Adrian.

Auburn hair caught the morning light, and even from a distance, Adrian could see the calm confidence of a man accustomed to being observed.

Lorenz mounted the ceremonial horse prepared for him.

The Milician guard formed behind him.

Adrian watched.

The young king carried himself well.

There was no visible hesitation.

No uncertainty.

He looked like a king.

Adrian acknowledged that silently.

The two sovereigns began riding toward one another.

Neither hurried.

Neither needed to.

As the distance closed, Lorenz finally had a clear view of the man approaching him.

He had heard enough descriptions.

Adrian was handsome.

Adrian was imposing.

Adrian was disciplined.

Adrian was considered one of the most capable rulers of his generation.

Lorenz had always assumed that some of it had been exaggerated.

People tended to exaggerate when speaking about emperors.

Apparently, they had not exaggerated enough.

Adrian sat easily upon the horse, his posture straight without appearing rigid.

The ivory coat made him look almost too princely for the severity of his reputation.

His platinum hair caught the morning light.

His sapphire eyes remained fixed upon the approaching delegation.

Lorenz stared for a moment longer than diplomacy strictly required.

So this is Adrian.

And then, despite himself—

Cassian is in serious trouble.

The thought nearly made him smile.

Cassian was handsome.

Very handsome.

Lorenz knew that better than most.

But Adrian was the Emperor.

And there was a difference between being an exceptionally handsome man and being the man who stood at the head of the Empire.

Lorenz could already see it.

The bearing.

The confidence.

The effortless control.

The Empire seemed to follow him without requiring him to demand it.

As they drew nearer, Lorenz noticed the details around him.

The Imperial Guard stood in perfect formation.

The officials waited in complete silence.

The avenue had been cleared with precision.

Nothing appeared hurried.

Nothing appeared uncertain.

The entire reception had been arranged as though the Empire had known exactly how this morning would unfold.

Perhaps it had.

Adrian finally reined in his horse.

Lorenz stopped opposite him.

For a brief moment, the two men simply regarded one another.

Then Adrian dismounted.

Lorenz followed.

And only then did Lorenz properly appreciate the Emperor’s height.

He was taller than he had expected.

Lorenz looked up slightly as they approached one another.

Wonderful.

Cassian had somehow managed to find himself competing with this man.

The thought was almost absurd.

Yet beneath the humor, Lorenz understood the gravity of what he was seeing.

Adrian was not merely handsome.

He was formidable.

The reports had been accurate.

Perhaps even conservative.

The two sovereigns stopped before one another.

Adrian extended his hand.

"King Lorenz."

Lorenz took it.

"Your Majesty."

He spoke in Imperial.

The language came easily to him, fluent enough that Adrian detected only the faintest trace of a Milician accent.

Adrian’s eyes rested on him for a brief moment.

He had known from the reports that Lorenz spoke Imperial.

Still, hearing the young king address him in his own language was different.

It was a small courtesy.

But a deliberate one.

Lorenz was standing on Imperial soil, before the Emperor of the Empire, and he had made the effort to meet him on his own ground.

Adrian respected that.

"Welcome to the Empire."

"Thank you for receiving us."

Adrian released his hand.

"We are pleased to have you here."

Lorenz inclined his head.

"And I am pleased that we have finally met."

A faint smile touched Adrian’s mouth.

"I believe our ministers have met far more often than either of us."

"That is certainly true."

Lorenz glanced briefly toward the officials behind them.

"They have done a great deal of work on our behalf."

"They have."

Adrian’s gaze returned to him.

"And now we can finally discuss the matters ourselves."

Lorenz smiled.

"I look forward to it."

There was nothing particularly remarkable in the exchange.

It was formal.

Polite.

Precisely what the occasion required.

Yet Lorenz found himself reassessing the reports all the same.

Adrian was observant.

Every response was measured.

Nothing was wasted.

He spoke with the ease of a man accustomed to making decisions and having others act upon them.

Lorenz understood, perhaps for the first time, why the Empire had remained so formidable.

There was no obvious weakness to seize upon.

No uncertainty.

No need for Adrian to prove himself.

He simply stood there as though the position belonged to him because it did.

Lorenz glanced toward the capital behind him.

The banners.

The guards.

The crowds.

The immense avenue prepared for their arrival.

The Empire had not needed to tell Milicia what it was.

It had simply allowed them to see it.

And Lorenz understood another thing as well.

Milicia could not afford a war with the Empire.

Not now.

Not while the kingdom was still rebuilding.

Not over any single matter.

Especially not over one man.

But that was precisely why they had come.

Not to challenge the Empire.

To find a way to stop needing to.

Adrian gestured toward the waiting procession.

"Shall we?"

Lorenz inclined his head.

"After you, Your Majesty."

Adrian returned to his horse.

The groom held the reins steady while Adrian placed one foot in the stirrup and mounted. He settled into the saddle with the same effortless control he had shown before.

Lorenz mounted after him.

For a moment, the two men sat side by side, their horses standing calmly beneath them.

Then Adrian gave the slightest movement of the reins.

His horse began walking toward the capital.

Lorenz followed at the same measured pace.

The Imperial Guard moved behind them, their formation advancing only after Adrian had taken the lead. The Milician guards followed Lorenz in the same manner, and behind them, the carriages and riders began to move once more.
