The Villainous Marquis Is Obsessed With Me
Chapter 96: Unbreakable Ally
The Emperor stopped writing and stared at the parchment, as if satisfied, before carefully dropping the quill beside it.
“You may rise.”
Penelope stood gracefully, keeping her hands folded neatly in front of her. She tried not to shift her weight too much, though the long walk made her legs ache beneath her layers of petticoats.
“I know you must be surprised as to why I suddenly summoned you here,” he said, his sharp, dark eyes narrowing slightly as he assessed her face. “Calm your mind, Lady Penelope. I summoned you here not because you have done anything wrong, nor because your husband has committed any faults either.”
Penelope maintained her graceful poise, her posture flawless. Hearing his reassurance eased the anxious knot in her chest, but it only stoked her curiosity further.
If neither she nor Vincent were in trouble, why go through the trouble of separating them for a private audience?
“Then… may I have the privilege of asking why His Imperial Majesty would wish to see me?” she asked softly, her tone respectful but steady.
The Emperor leaned back in his high-back throne, resting his chin against his laced fingers. Up close, beneath the little flickering candlelight of the solar, the faint gray cast to his complexion betrayed his failing health. Yet, his gaze remained pierced and terrifyingly sharp.
“Because you are a variable I did not account for,” the Emperor replied smoothly. “Your husband has been one of my most loyal, and ruthless blades for years. When I chose to elevate him to Duke, I anticipated the return of the man I knew, a man governed solely by duty. A man with nothing to lose is a powerful tool, Lady Penelope. But a man with a heart? A man with a vulnerability he must protect at all costs? That alters the calculus entirely.”
Penelope blinked, a cold knot tightening in her chest as she tried to grasp the true weight of his words.
“I had my reasons for favoring a union between Lord Vincent and Lady Catherine. But as that path is closed, I brought you here to measure your depth,” the Emperor said, the faintest hint of a smile grazing his pale face. “Tonight, Vincent ascends as the Duke of his people. He will walk directly into a den of vipers who will stop at nothing to drag him down. You know this. But as his Duchess, you will be in the pit beside him. The mantle of a Duchess is heavy, so tell me, Lady Penelope of Vandalia, are you prepared to be crushed under its weight, or can you bear it?”
Penelope let out a quiet, trembling breath.
The Emperor’s words cut dangerously deep. It wasn’t just the inquiry that unsettled her… it was the quiet, absolute weight in which he delivered it. In an instant, the ghostly remnants of her nightmare flashed behind her eyes, cold and haunting. Her fingers instinctively tightened, clutching her skirt.
She knew how the world saw her.
Afterall, she was merely a baron’s daughter– a woman of low standing thrust into the highest echelon of Imperial power. It was natural for the sovereign to harbor doubts.
It was even natural for him to suspect she had ensnared Vincent for ambition or status.
But Vincent was her husband.
She might not know what trap lay hidden in the Imperial court, but she had pledged her life to him, and she would not falter when he needed her most.
Unclasping her hands, Penelope stood tall, locking eyes with the ruler of the empire without a single trace of fear.
“His Imperial Majesty is remarkably generous, but I must decline,” Penelope stated smoothly, to his unexpected surprise. “I am fully aware of what you have done for my husband. You saved his life, and he carries a deep, unwavering loyalty toward you. I do not doubt that your counsel comes from a place of royal concern. But if you are offering me a quiet exit from this court, I cannot accept it. I did not marry Lord Vincent to be his weakness. You may rest assured, Your Imperial Majesty, I intend to stand firmly at his side.”
Every word was etched with absolute truth.
Penelope was prepared to face whatever darkness waited in the capital. She would ensure Vincent reached his rightful place, and she would claim her own beside him.
Silence settled heavily over the private solar. The Emperor studied her, his expression unreadable, until a mysterious, calculating spark ignited in his eyes.
“If that is where your conviction lies,” he murmured, his voice laced with renewed intrigue, “then I have a test for you. Succeed in the mandate I am about to give you, and I will accept that your words are not merely pretty promises.”
Penelope felt a sharp prickle of alertness.
“…A mandate, Your Imperial Majesty?”
He straightened his posture, the air about him instantly replaced by the terrifying presence of an absolute monarch.
“This empire will soon face a reckoning,” the Emperor declared, his tone cold and decisive. “I can only secure our future if my two most formidable blades cut in the same direction. Therefore, I task you with bridging the divide. You must ensure that the Duke of Belgravia and the new Duke of Vandalia fight on the same side.”
Penelope’s breath hitched in her throat as the weight of his words settled upon her.
“You mean… my husband and Duke Lucian?”
The Emperor let out a faint, dry chuckle, though there was no humor in his hollow eyes. He leaned back against the plush velvet rest of his high-backed chair, tapping one pale, ringed finger slowly against the mahogany armrest.
“Precisely,” the Emperor said, his voice quiet yet carrying an undeniable weight. “Lord Vincent and Duke Lucian are two halves of the military spine that keeps this empire from fracturing into chaos. Yet, their mutual disdain for one another is no secret to the imperial court. They are proud, unyielding men who would rather stand alone in a storm than extend a hand to the other.”
He paused, his piercing gaze locking onto Penelope, measuring the quiet shock still lingering in her eyes.
“Vincent trusts no one in this capital—save for you,” he continued, his voice dropping into a conspiratorial murmur. “And Lucian, despite his brooding demeanor and sharp tongue, possesses a sense of honor that respects true conviction over political title. You are the only bridge that can span the chasm between them without triggering their competitive arrogance.”
Penelope felt her breath catch softly in her throat. The sheer political impossibility of the task made her pulse race. Vincent and Lucian shared a deep-seated rivalrous history; forcing them into a room together usually resulted in barbed insults, if not drawn steel. Asking them to ally was like asking oil and water to mix.
Not to mention, she had hardly made a flattering first impression on Duke Lucian. He likely despised her just as much after discovering whose wife she was.
“But, Your Imperial Majesty—”
“A house divided against itself cannot stand, Lady Penelope,” the Emperor interjected smoothly, his deep voice carrying a terrifying, absolute authority that cut through her hesitation. “The factional tides in the capital are shifting, and darker storms are brewing on our borders. If my two strongest houses remain at odds, the empire will bleed.”
The Emperor gestured toward her, his voice dropping into a low, commanding register that seemed to reverberate off the stone walls of the solar.
“You claim you did not marry Vincent to be his vulnerability. Do this, and not only will you earn my trust—you will give your husband the one weapon he currently lacks in this treacherous court: a true, unbreakable ally.”
Penelope stood beneath his heavy, calculating gaze, the immense weight of the crown settling squarely upon her shoulders. The Emperor wasn’t just testing her worthiness as a Duchess; he was handing her the key to Vincent’s political survival.
Yet the sheer suddenness of the mandate left her mind spinning.
To reconcile two of the empire’s most powerful, hostile men was an impossible gambit. Did he expect her to simply nod and accept an imperial gamble of this scale without a second thought?
Noticing the guarded flicker in her eyes, the Emperor leaned back slightly, his piercing tone turning deliberate.
“Consider my offer,” he said, the quiet authority in his voice leaving no room for misunderstanding. “I am giving you time to measure your own resolve. But I shall expect your definitive answer by tomorrow night.”
