The Villainous Marquis Is Obsessed With Me
Chapter 99: The Missing Seal
Penelope turned to her heel, coming face-to-face with Vincent, who recoiled slightly in surprise at her dramatic leap.
“Hey, it’s only me,” he said, his voice instantly softening.
Penelope blinked at him in the dim moonlight. The initial burst of terror ebbed away, but the relief of seeing a familiar, safe presence caused a sudden lump to form in her throat.
Without a word, she closed the distance between them and buried her face in his chest.
“Why is everyone intent on terrifying me tonight?” she murmured, wrapping her arms around his waist and clinging to him tighter.
“Penny?”
Vincent’s hand came up to rest gently on her shoulders. He eased her back gently, tilting his head to inspect her features with a furrowed brow. “Are you alright? Did something happen?”
Penelope met the anxious tenderness in his cool grey eyes and held her tongue. If she revealed her disastrous encounter with Lucian, it would only fuel the flames of a feud she was desperately trying to extinguish.
Suppressing her panic, she leaned back into his warmth, wrapping her arms securely around him once more.
“You are here now,” she whispered softly, letting her eyes flutter shut against the steady beat of his heart. “That is all that matters.”
Vincent’s chest rose with a quiet sigh as his fingers brushed tenderly through the soft curls of her hair. “I went to your chambers to get you. But… the maids panicked. They said you left without a word. Is that true?”
Penelope leaned back, meeting his gaze with a faint, sheepish smile. “Ah… yes. The dressing room felt a bit stifling, so I came out for some fresh air. I ought to have informed them. Forgive me, Vincent.”
“Are you certain nothing is amiss?” he asked gently. His calloused fingers cupped her jaw, his thumb tracing the curve of her cheekbone before tucking a stray curl behind her ear. “Is it the party? If you are overwhelmed, Penny, we can delay our entrance. We do not have to step through those doors until you are ready.”
“What are you saying? I am ready,” Penelope insisted, offering him a firm, reassuring smile.
She took a graceful step backward, drawing the crisp night air deep into her lungs to anchor her nerves. “Tell me truthfully—how do I look? Do I appear fit to stand at your side?”
Vincent stared down at her, his grey eyes kindling with a sudden, breathtaking warmth. He casually slipped one hand into his trousers pocket, his posture relaxed as he watched her perform a playful, elegant 360 degree turn just for him. The heavy, luxurious silk of her skirts swished melodiously across the flagstones, catching the silver radiance of the moon.
“You look magnificent,” he said softly, the genuine praise laced with quiet devotion. “You are, without question, the highlight of my evening.”
His words sent her heart fluttering violently against her ribs. Looking at him properly now, she realized she had been so consumed by her dread that she failed to appreciate the sheer, striking sight of her own husband. The deep, regal burgundy of his heavy velvet coat and matching embroidered vest perfectly mirrored the shade of her own gown. Intricate gold filigree glittered across his shoulders and lapels in the moonlight, anchored by a crisp white cravat pinned with a ruby brooch.
He looked outrageously handsome, like a sinfully attractive warlord, and the dark magnetic look in his eyes sent a deep, betraying blush creeping up her cheeks. Instead of shying away, Penelope stepped closer, erasing the distance between them with swift, eager steps. She smoothly slipped her hand through the crook of his arm, leaning into his side as she flashed a subtle, mischievous smile.
“Shall we go now, Your Grace?”

Meanwhile, amidst the glittering chandeliers and thrumming orchestra of the grand ballroom, Lady Madeline pulled Catherine into a quiet alcove, her eyes gleaming with toxic glee.
“My brother?” Catherine murmured, swirling the champagne in her glass with a dismissive tilt of her head. “Madeline, please. Had you accused any other man in this hall, I might take you seriously. But Lucian? He avoids women like the plague.”
“Are you implying I am a liar?” Madeline gasped, her voice dripping with offended drama. “Cathy, I saw them with my own eyes! They were hidden in the shadow of the terrace, practically entwined! She had her hands pinned to his chest, gazing up at him, while Lucian held her as though he had no intention of ever letting go. It was disgraceful!”
Catherine glanced away, a weary sigh escaping her lips. “I have no desire to speak of that woman. In a matter of hours, she will be the Duchess Devereux. Why would she risk everything to throw herself at Lucian when she already possesses a man like Vincent? You were blinded by the moonlight.”
“Oh, my sweet, foolish Cathy,” Madeline whispered, her tone curdling into venomous fake sympathy as she leaned in closer. “You are far too pure for this court. Ambitious parasites like her do not stop at one prize. They collect men like trophies. But do you not see the miracle in this?”
Madeline caught Catherine’s wrist, her fingers tightening with cruel enthusiasm.
“This is the exact wedge you need. Once Vincent’s eyes are opened to his wife’s scandalous infidelity, his marriage will crumble. And who do you think will be there to comfort him in his betrayal? I am saying this for your own good. That scheming lowborn has made a fool of you for far too long.”
“I will not build my victory upon my brother’s ruin,” Catherine stated firmly, pulling her hand away with regal disdain. “Devise whatever plot you wish, Madeline, but leave Lucian out of your venomous tales. He has stood by me faithfully, and even interceded with Vincent for my sake. Furthermore, the idea of him being drawn to that woman is utterly laughable.”
Catherine understood her brother’s heart. Lucian undoubtedly held the same contempt for Penelope that she did—viewing the girl as nothing more than an unworthy intruder who had stolen Catherine’s rightfully earned place.
Madeline opened her mouth to snap back, but the resonant strike of a staff against the marble floor rang out, instantly drowning her out.
A silver trumpet sounded from the high balcony, sweeping a sudden, expectant hush over the entire ballroom.
“Presenting His Lordship, Marquis Vincent Devereux, and the Marchioness Penelope Devereux!” the Imperial Herald’s voice reverberated off the gilded chandeliers. “Honored guests of His Imperial Majesty for the glorious occasion of their ducal elevation!”
The massive double doors of the grand hall swung open in unison, revealing Marquis Vincent and Marchioness Penelope standing side by side.Their appearance earned collective gasps from the gathered nobility.
Draped in matching deep burgundy velvet, their shoulders traced with brilliant, gold filigree and ruby jewels, the couple looked extraordinarily commanding. Hand in hand, they stepped onto the polished marble path that led toward the raised dais where the Imperial throne sat.
Silence fell over the ballroom, heavy and breathless, before their whispered reactions buzzed through the air.
Near the front column, several noble ladies fanned themselves vigorously, their eyes sharp with green envy as they took in Penelope’s immaculate gown.
“To think a nameless lowborn is about to wear the mantle of Duchess Vandalia,” one snorted behind her silk fan.”She has not even taken the oath, yet she parades through the imperial court like she belongs here.”
“Do not mistake her for a fool, my dear,” another replied with a melodic, condescending laugh. “She is the clever little parasite who stole Lord Vincent straight out of Lady Catherine’s hands. Catherine was far too refined to fight dirty, but this girl clearly has no such scruples.”
“Oh, let her enjoy her moment in the sun,” a third added, her eyes narrowing with aristocratic pride. “When she finally sits at our table, her lack of breeding will reveal itself soon enough. She will be so terribly easy to manipulate.”
Yet through the treacherous sea of hostile whispers, not all eyes were hostile. Several elderly lords and highborn matriarchs looked on with silent reverence, murmuring in quiet praise of the absolute stability Vincent had restored to his house.
Positioned along the perimeter among the honor guard, Elias stood turned to stone. Watching His Lordship move through the hall with such formidable majesty brought a surge of fiercely loyal pride to his chest. As Vincent’s gaze brushed his for a fraction of a second, Elias offered a crisp, imperceptible nod.
Every trial, every sacrifice, had led to this singular triumph.
When Vincent and Penelope arrived at the base of the high dais, the music died away into a reverent stillness. In accordance with ancient Imperial tradition, the Imperial Chancellor soon stepped forward, holding a crimson silk cushion bearing two jeweled coronets.
Vincent bowed with solemn grace, leading Penelope into a sweeping curtsy before the throne.
Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. If the magnitude of the ceremony threatened to swallow her whole, she wondered how Vincent carried the weight of it—the culmination of his entire life’s burden.
Dropping to one knee upon the plush carpet, Vincent reached out, his warm fingers closing over hers to anchor her as she knelt at his side. With heads bowed beneath the gazes of the four kingdoms, they prepared to receive the ancient rites.
The imperial Chancellor moved to the edge of the altar, his gilded robe rustling in the breathless silence of the hall. He lifted the jeweled coronet meant for Vincent, turning to face the Emperor, who sat upon the raised golden throne.
“By royal decree of His Imperial Majesty,” the Chancellor’s voice boomed, echoing off the high vaulted ceilings, “we bestow upon Marquis Vincent Devereux the supreme mantle of the Duke of Vandalia, bound by the sacred seal of state.”
Following centuries of unbroken tradition, the Chancellor finally turned toward the crimson velvet cushion held by a young palace page, extending his hand to retrieve the heavy, gold-encrusted Imperial Seal of Vandalia. It was the ancient emblem required to finalize the oath and mark the official parchment, else, the title would not be legally conferred.
His hand hovered over the cushion and stopped dead.
The Chancellor froze.
The velvet cushion he had reached for was empty. The sacred seal, which had been secured in the Imperial vault less than an hour ago, was gone.
A tense beat of silence stretched over the dais. The Chancellor’s breath hitched, his face drained of color as he glanced frantically at the page, who was staring at the empty cushion in mounting horror.
“Where is the seal?” the Chancellor whispered, a sharp, terrified hiss meant only for the boy’s ears.
Vincent’s sharp eyes flicked upward. Feeling the sudden, abnormal delay, his gaze narrowed, catching the empty cushion and the cold sweat glistening on the Chancellor’s brow.
The Chancellor turned toward the golden throne, leaning in to whisper the catastrophic breach to the Emperor.
The Emperor’s gaze turned to stone. With a single, heavy gesture of his arm, he commanded absolute silence.
“Cease the drums,” the Herald barked, his voice echoing into a room suddenly fraught with terror.
The Chancellor stepped to the edge of the dais, his voice strained as he addressed the ocean of noble onlookers. “By order of the Crown, the rites cannot proceed. The Imperial Seal is missing.”
