Chapter 33: The Other Kael

  • Next Chapter

Bang!

The black door slammed shut.

Kael stared at it.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The final System notification remained suspended before his eyes.

[Identity conflict detected.]

[Two versions of Host recognized.]

[Caution.]

[Only one of them may leave.]

Kael slowly lowered his sword.

"That’s..."

He stared at the door.

"...probably the worst thing you’ve ever told me."

[The System agrees.]

Kael blinked.

"Wait."

The notification remained.

"Did you just agree with me?"

[Yes.]

Kael narrowed his eyes.

"Something is seriously wrong with you."

[The System has been exposed to excessive narrative instability.]

A pause.

[The System apologizes.]

Kael stared.

That was somehow more disturbing than the threat.

Behind him, Leon stepped closer.

"So."

Kael looked at him.

Leon pointed toward the door.

"That was you?"

"No."

"Are you sure?"

"Pretty sure."

Mira crossed her arms.

"You said that version of you looked like the person from your memory."

Kael nodded.

"Yes."

"Then who was he?"

Kael stared at the door.

"I don’t know."

Third answered from behind them.

"I do."

Everyone turned.

Third’s gray eyes remained fixed on the black door.

"He’s not another Kael."

Kael frowned.

"Then what is he?"

Third took a slow breath.

"He’s the version of you that never became Kael Veyron."

Silence.

Kael’s expression changed.

"What?"

Second stepped beside Third.

"He’s the identity that existed before the name."

Kael looked at them.

"But my First Name..."

"Wasn’t your first identity."

Third shook his head.

"It was the first identity you chose after abandoning the one before it."

Kael’s mind went blank.

He turned toward the black door again.

The younger figure’s face flashed through his memory.

Calm.

Confident.

Certain.

Nothing like the confused teenager who had awakened in Elarin.

Nothing like the ordinary young man who had died in his previous life.

That version of him looked as though he belonged in the white room.

As though he had always known what was happening.

Kael whispered:

"Then who was I?"

Nobody answered.

The academy trembled.

A crack spread across the ground.

Lucien immediately looked upward.

"We’re running out of time."

Kael looked at him.

"How much?"

Lucien checked the magical readings surrounding Aetheris.

"Not enough."

The System appeared.

[Unnamed Story formation: 38%.]

[Narrative stability: 16%.]

[Aetheris integrity: 41%.]

Kael frowned.

"That went up."

Lucien nodded.

"The replacement narrative is stabilizing."

Mira looked toward the doors.

"And those things are helping it."

Kael nodded.

"The doors are anchors."

He turned toward the black door.

"Then we destroy the anchors."

Second immediately shook his head.

"No."

Kael looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because that door isn’t an anchor."

Second’s expression was grim.

"It’s a foundation."

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

"What’s the difference?"

Third answered.

"If you destroy an anchor, the structure falls."

He pointed toward the black door.

"If you destroy a foundation..."

He paused.

"...everything above it falls with it."

Kael stared.

"And everything below?"

Third didn’t answer.

Kael understood.

"Us."

Third nodded.

"Probably."

Leon looked toward the door.

"So destroying it isn’t an option."

Kael sighed.

"Of course."

He walked toward it.

Elena grabbed his arm.

"Where are you going?"

"Inside."

"No."

Kael looked at her.

"I have to."

"We’re coming with you."

Kael shook his head.

"Not this time."

Elena’s grip tightened.

"You don’t get to decide that alone."

"Elena—"

"You keep disappearing."

Her voice became quieter.

"Every time you do, you come back with another secret."

Kael went silent.

Elena released his arm.

"I don’t know what you were before."

Her violet eyes remained fixed on him.

"I don’t know what the First Story thinks you are."

She glanced at the black door.

"And I definitely don’t understand why another version of you is waiting behind it."

Then she looked back at him.

"But I know who you are now."

Kael didn’t answer.

Elena continued.

"You’re Kael."

A faint smile appeared on her face.

"Annoying. Reckless. Impossible."

Leon chuckled.

"She’s being generous."

Mira smiled faintly.

"Very generous."

Kael looked at them.

For a moment—

the endless doors didn’t matter.

The strange entities didn’t matter.

The Author didn’t matter.

He was simply standing there with people who had chosen to stay beside him.

Then Pi climbed onto his shoulder.

"Pi."

Kael looked at it.

"You too?"

Pi nodded.

"Always."

Kael smiled.

"Fine."

He turned toward the door.

"We go together."

The System immediately appeared.

[Party-based entry detected.]

[Warning.]

[The destination may not recognize party members.]

Kael frowned.

"Meaning?"

[Only one identity may be permitted to cross.]

Kael sighed.

"Why does every door in this place have terrible rules?"

[Unknown.]

"You’re really enjoying that answer."

[The System finds it efficient.]

Kael placed his hand against the black door.

The surface was cold.

A symbol appeared beneath his palm.

The empty circle.

Then—

the door spoke.

"Name yourself."

Kael froze.

Mira looked at him.

"What did it say?"

"You didn’t hear it?"

Everyone shook their heads.

Kael stared at the door.

"Name yourself."

The System appeared.

[Identity authentication required.]

Kael frowned.

"Kael Veyron."

The door remained closed.

"Rejected."

Kael’s eyes widened.

He tried again.

"Kael."

"Rejected."

He gritted his teeth.

"Then what do you want?"

The door answered.

"The name you chose before you were named."

Kael’s chest tightened.

His First Name.

The one the System had refused to display.

The one hidden behind every restriction.

The one he had heard in the memory.

Kael closed his eyes.

He could almost hear it.

A word.

A single word.

His word.

But whenever he reached for it—

something blocked him.

The black quill.

The Selector.

The First Story.

The Author.

Something.

Kael clenched his fists.

"I can’t remember."

The door remained silent.

Then—

"You don’t need to remember."

Kael opened his eyes.

"What?"

"You only need to choose."

Kael stared.

The words echoed inside his mind.

Choose.

The same word.

The word from the white room.

The word Pi had remembered.

The word that seemed to follow him through every layer of reality.

Kael slowly raised his hand.

"I choose..."

The door began glowing.

A memory flashed.

Young Kael standing before the white-masked figure.

The figure asking:

"What will you choose?"

Young Kael answered.

But the memory distorted before the name could be heard.

Kael opened his eyes.

"No."

The door waited.

"I won’t choose a name."

Silence.

Kael smiled.

"I’ll choose myself."

The empty circle on the door cracked.

[Narrative Interference activated.]

[Identity declaration detected.]

[External identity assignment rejected.]

The black door began shaking.

"INVALID."

Kael’s smile widened.

"That’s the point."

He pushed his hand against the door.

The empty circle shattered.

A wave of Karma erupted.

The doors across the sky began closing.

One.

Two.

Ten.

Hundreds.

The beings behind them screamed.

The unnamed story trembled.

[Unnamed Story formation: 31%.]

[27%.]

[19%.]

[12%.]

Lucien stared.

"It’s collapsing!"

Mira raised a barrier.

"What did he do?"

Second stared at Kael.

"He rejected the foundation."

Third’s eyes widened.

"The story can’t assign him a name."

Kael gritted his teeth.

"Then let’s see what happens when I don’t play by its rules."

The black door opened.

A powerful force dragged Kael forward.

"Kael!"

Elena grabbed his hand.

Leon grabbed Elena.

Mira grabbed Leon.

Lucien caught Mira.

Second and Third joined the chain.

Pi dug its claws into Kael’s shoulder.

The entire group was pulled toward the darkness.

Kael shouted:

"Hold on!"

They disappeared.

Silence.

Kael opened his eyes.

He was standing in a room.

Not the white room.

Not the City of Names.

Not the First Tower.

This room was different.

It looked ordinary.

A wooden table.

Two chairs.

A small window.

A bookshelf.

A lamp.

A bed.

There were no magical symbols.

No ancient inscriptions.

No impossible entities.

No floating System notifications.

It looked like—

home.

Kael froze.

"This..."

He knew this room.

His previous life’s bedroom.

But it wasn’t exactly the same.

The bookshelf was different.

The desk was different.

The walls were a slightly different color.

And on the table—

there was a photograph.

Kael slowly approached.

He picked it up.

His hand trembled.

The photograph showed him.

But not alone.

There were other people.

A family.

Friends.

People he didn’t remember.

One person stood beside him.

The Selector.

Kael stared.

The Selector looked younger.

Not by much.

But enough.

Kael turned the photograph over.

Words were written on the back.

"You promised you wouldn’t forget us."

Kael’s heart stopped.

"Us?"

A voice answered.

"Yes."

Kael spun around.

The younger version of himself was sitting in the chair.

He looked exactly as before.

Calm.

Relaxed.

Almost amused.

Kael raised his sword.

The younger Kael laughed.

"You still do that."

"What are you?"

The other Kael looked at the sword.

"That’s your first question?"

"Answer."

The other Kael leaned back.

"You already know."

"No."

"Then why are you holding a sword?"

Kael’s expression darkened.

"Because I don’t trust you."

The other Kael smiled.

"Good."

He stood.

"At least that part survived."

Kael watched him carefully.

"What do you mean?"

The other Kael walked toward the bookshelf.

He pulled out a book.

Kael recognized it immediately.

Chronicles of the Fallen World.

He dropped it onto the table.

Kael stared.

"That book..."

"Wasn’t fiction."

"I know."

"No."

The other Kael shook his head.

"You think you know."

He opened the book.

The pages were blank.

Every single one.

Kael frowned.

"Why are they empty?"

"Because the story hasn’t been written yet."

Kael stared.

"But I read it."

The other Kael smiled.

"Did you?"

Kael’s expression changed.

"What?"

"You remember reading it."

"Yes."

"Then tell me."

The other Kael pointed toward the blank pages.

"Who wrote it?"

Kael opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

He didn’t know.

He had never questioned it.

The book had simply existed.

The other Kael smiled.

"Exactly."

He closed it.

"You didn’t read the story."

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

"Then what did I read?"

The answer came softly.

"A message."

Silence.

Kael looked toward the photograph again.

"From who?"

The other Kael didn’t answer.

Instead, he walked toward the window.

Outside was a city.

Kael recognized it.

His previous city.

But there was something wrong

Nobody was moving.

Cars were frozen.

People were frozen.

Birds hung motionless in the sky.

The entire world was paused.

Kael stared.

"What happened?"

The other Kael looked outside.

"This was the moment you were chosen."

Kael’s eyes widened.

"My death."

"Yes."

"You said I was called."

"I said you were chosen."

"By who?"

The other Kael looked at him.

Then—

he pointed behind Kael.

Kael turned.

The Selector stood there.

No mask.

No cloak.

No mysterious aura.

Just the person Kael remembered from his previous life.

The person whose face he had recognized.

The person whose name remained sealed.

They smiled sadly.

"Hello."

Kael’s breathing stopped.

He finally asked the question.

"What’s your name?"

The Selector’s smile disappeared.

For a moment, they looked genuinely afraid.

Then the System appeared.

[WARNING.]

[Name recognition attempt detected.]

[Identity seal responding.]

Kael gritted his teeth.

"No."

The Selector stepped backward.

"Kael..."

"No."

Kael moved forward.

"You’ve hidden enough."

The room shook.

The other Kael watched silently.

Kael pointed at the Selector.

"You were there when I died."

"Yes."

"You were there when I agreed to return."

"Yes."

"You knew Pi."

"Yes."

"You knew what I was."

The Selector hesitated.

"Yes."

Kael’s voice became colder.

"Then tell me."

The Selector closed their eyes.

"I can’t."

"Why?"

"Because you were the one who made the rule."

Kael froze.

"What rule?"

The Selector opened their eyes.

"You said that if you ever returned..."

The room began cracking.

"...you didn’t want anyone else to tell you who you were."

Kael stared.

The Selector continued.

"You wanted to remember it yourself."

The other Kael smiled.

"That’s why the seal exists."

Kael turned toward him.

"You knew?"

"I helped create it."

Kael’s eyes widened.

"You?"

The other Kael nodded.

"Me."

"Then why are you here?"

The other Kael looked toward the window.

"Because you forgot."

He turned back.

"And someone has to remind you."

Kael’s sword lowered slightly.

"Remind me of what?"

The other Kael walked toward him.

He stopped directly in front of Kael.

Then whispered:

"Why you chose to come back."

Kael stared.

The room suddenly vanished.

A final memory appeared.

Young Kael stood before the black door.

Pi beside him.

The Selector behind him.

The white-masked figure before him.

The countless doors surrounding them.

Young Kael looked at the darkness.

Then said:

"I’ll go."

The white-masked figure asked:

"Why?"

Young Kael smiled.

"Because the story isn’t supposed to end like this."

The figure asked:

"And if you forget?"

Young Kael looked at Pi.

"Then I’ll find myself again."

The memory began fading.

But Kael heard one final sentence.

His younger self whispered:

"Even if I have to become someone else first."

Kael’s eyes widened.

The memory shattered.

He returned to darkness.

His body felt weightless.

The System appeared.

[Memory Recovery: 63%.]

Kael stared.

It had jumped.

Then another notification appeared.

[Return Authority: AWAKENING.]

[Narrative Interference: Evolving.]

[New Ability detected.]

Kael’s eyes narrowed.

[Identity Refusal.]

Effect: The Host may reject an externally imposed identity, designation, or narrative role.]

Kael slowly smiled.

"So that’s what I’ve been doing all along."

A final notification appeared.

[Hidden condition satisfied.]

[Host has remembered the reason for his return.]

Kael’s smile disappeared.

The reward appeared.

[Reward: Partial Return Authority.]

Then—

[Return Authority: 13%.]

Kael looked around.

"Partial?"

[Correct.]

"What’s missing?"

The System paused.

Then:

[The reason you chose to return.]L

Kael frowned.

"But I just remembered."

[You remembered the choice.]

[Not the reason.]

Kael’s expression hardened.

Before he could respond—

a voice whispered from the darkness.

"Because you failed."

Kael froze.

It wasn’t the Selector.

It wasn’t the other Kael.

It wasn’t Pi.

It wasn’t the System.

Something else spoke.

"You returned because the first ending killed everyone."

Kael’s eyes widened.

The voice continued.

"And this time..."

A white eye opened in the darkness.

"...you were supposed to save them."

Kael stared.

The eye smiled.

"But you forgot who they were."

The darkness vanished.

Kael opened his eyes.

He was back at Aetheris.

Leon, Elena, Mira, Lucien, Second, Third, and Pi were beside him.

The countless doors were gone.

The enormous entity remained above them

But something had changed.

The System appeared.

[Unnamed Story formation: 0%.]

Kael’s eyes widened.

The replacement narrative had failed.

Then another notification appeared.

[Unnamed Story: TERMINATED.]

Kael exhaled.

"We did it."

Leon smiled.

"For once."

Mira looked relieved.

Elena lowered her barrier.

Lucien stared at the sky.

But Kael didn’t celebrate.

Because the enormous entity was still there.

And it was staring directly at him.

Then it spoke.

"GOOD."

Kael looked upward.

The entity continued.

"YOU REMEMBERED THE FIRST REASON."

Kael’s blood ran cold.

"First reason?"

The entity’s countless eyes slowly closed.

"NOW REMEMBER THE SECOND."

The sky went completely black.

And somewhere beneath Aetheris—

something enormous began to wake.
