The Villain's Second Life
Chapter 26: The Door That Knocked
The knocking continued.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Each knock traveled through the northern mountains and shook the foundations of the Frost estate.
The black crystal at the center of the chamber trembled.
Inside it, the original vessel remained sealed. Its white armor was cracked, its golden eye dimmed, but it was not unconscious.
It was listening.
Veyron lay several feet away, blood running from the corner of his mouth. The explosion had torn his cloak and left deep black cracks across his body.
Yet he was smiling.
Ethan Vale stood over him with the black sword pointed at his throat.
"Explain."
Veyron looked up at him.
"You restored the prison."
"Yes."
"You reconnected the fragments."
"By accident."
"Accidents are usually more honest than plans."
Another knock shook the chamber.
A crack appeared in the air above the black crystal.
Not in the stone.
Not in the sky.
In reality itself.
The crack was thin and vertical, surrounded by golden light.
Something existed behind it.
Something was trying to enter.
Noah Blake stood beside Professor Aurelia Voss, staring at the crack.
"I have a question."
Nobody answered.
Noah raised his voice.
"Why is reality knocking?"
Veyron turned his head toward him.
"Because it wants to come in."
Noah’s expression became serious.
"Then we should not open the door."
"That is not how doors work," Veyron said.
"It is how locked doors work."
The knocking came again.
This time, the black crystal answered.
A pulse of golden energy moved through the chamber, passing through the Sixth Fragment and into the white chains surrounding the original vessel.
The chains tightened.
The creature inside the crystal opened its eye.
A voice entered everyone’s minds.
**The prison has been restored.**
Ethan felt the golden mark over his heart burn.
**The key has returned.**
The voice was not the Observer’s.
It belonged to the vessel.
Or perhaps to the Door.
Ethan looked toward Veyron.
"You said the Observer was trapped."
"It is."
"Then what is behind the Door?"
Veyron’s smile faded.
"Not the Observer."
The room became silent.
Veyron pushed himself upright.
"The Observer is only the first layer."
Ethan lowered the sword slightly.
"Explain."
Veyron looked toward the crack in reality.
"Beyond the Observer is the place it came from. Beyond that place are things even the Observer fears."
Noah stared at him.
"You are telling me there is something worse than the giant golden eye?"
"Yes."
"That is deeply unfair."
Veyron continued:
"The First Door was not created to keep the Observer outside. It was created to keep everything outside."
Ethan understood.
The ancient prison had not been designed to protect the world from one entity.
It had been designed to isolate the world from an entire realm.
The Observer was not the invader.
It was the watcher stationed at the boundary.
The golden eyes were looking inward because something else was trying to reach the world from beyond.
The knocking came again.
The black crystal cracked.
One of the white chains broke.
The original vessel moved inside the prison.
Evelyn Ashford stepped forward.
"What is beyond the Door?"
Veyron looked at her.
"Things without names."
"That is not an answer."
"Names are laws. Anything with a name can be understood, measured, and controlled."
The crack above the crystal widened.
"Whatever is outside has no name."
Ethan looked at the golden eye inside the crystal.
The vessel was not trying to escape.
It was trying to keep the Door closed.
The Observer had been warning them.
Not threatening them.
Warning them.
The golden eyes had watched the world because they were watching the other side.
The true enemy was not the Observer.
It was what waited behind it.
Ethan lowered his sword.
Veyron noticed.
"You finally understand."
"I understand that you lied."
"I omitted the truth."
"You told Cassian that the Observer would give him freedom."
"I told him what he wanted to hear."
"You used him."
"Yes."
Ethan’s eyes hardened.
"You used everyone."
Veyron’s expression became cold.
"So did you."
The words struck the chamber.
Veyron stood slowly.
"You used armies. You used kingdoms. You used your students. You used Evelyn. You even used yourself."
"I was trying to save the world."
"So was I."
"You tried to open the Door."
"I tried to control the only thing that could close it."
"You gave the Observer a vessel."
"I gave it a temporary anchor."
"You almost destroyed reality."
"I failed."
Ethan stepped closer.
"You nearly killed Elena."
Veyron looked toward the entrance.
"She survived."
"That is not an excuse."
"It is a fact."
Ethan raised the sword again.
Veyron did not move.
"You can kill me now," he said. "But the Door will remain open."
Ethan looked at the crack.
The second knock came from behind it.
This time, the sound was quieter.
More patient.
The crack widened by another inch.
Black light spilled into the chamber.
The white chains around the original vessel began to melt.
Marianne Frost rushed toward the crystal.
"The prison is failing!"
Professor Voss raised her staff.
"What can we do?"
Marianne placed both hands against the stone floor.
"The Sixth Fragment needs a living command."
Ethan looked at her.
"Mine?"
"No."
The black crown surrounded by chains appeared over the crystal.
"The bloodline command was severed."
"Then what command remains?"
Marianne’s expression became grim.
"The original guardian."
Everyone looked at the crystal.
The original vessel stood inside it, its golden eye burning brighter.
"It is alive," Marianne said.
"It is not human," Ethan replied.
"It does not need to be."
Veyron stepped forward.
"The vessel can close the Door."
"Then why has it not?"
"Because it cannot distinguish the Door from the prison."
Ethan understood.
The vessel had been corrupted for too long.
It no longer knew which side it was protecting.
The First Door was connected to it.
If it closed the Door, it might also seal itself permanently.
If it failed, the things beyond the boundary would enter.
The original vessel looked toward Ethan.
**Key.**
Ethan walked toward the black crystal.
Professor Voss grabbed his arm.
"Do not go closer."
"It needs recognition."
"You do not know what it will do."
"I know what happens if we wait."
The next knock was louder.
The crack in reality stretched from the ceiling to the floor.
For a brief moment, something pressed against the opening.
It had no shape.
No face.
But the stone around it bent away.
The airship above the estate exploded.
The sound reached the chamber as a distant roar.
The Frost estate began collapsing.
Ethan placed his palm against the crystal.
Cold spread through his arm.
The original vessel’s golden eye focused on him.
**You are not the key.**
Ethan frowned.
"What?"
**You are the lock.**
The black crystal pulsed.
The four fragments inside Ethan’s soul reacted violently.
The Crown.
The Witness.
Knowledge.
The Sword.
The Fifth Flame connected from above.
The Sixth Prison answered.
The golden mark over Ethan’s heart opened.
The Observer entered his mind.
Not as a voice.
As an image.
A vast golden structure stood beyond the First Door.
The Observer was inside it, bound by chains of light.
Behind the structure was an ocean of darkness.
Something moved beneath that ocean.
The Observer was not watching the world.
It was holding the boundary.
And the chains were breaking.
Ethan understood the truth.
The fragments were not pieces of his power alone.
They were parts of a locking system.
Each one represented a function:
The Crown commanded.
The Witness remembered.
Knowledge understood.
The Sword sacrificed.
The Flame revealed.
The Prison contained.
But one function was missing.
The Lock.
Ethan.
His soul had been divided because his existence was the final seal.
He had not become the lock voluntarily.
He had been designed to become it.
The memory Seraphina erased was not about the command.
It was about the choice.
Ethan had chosen to turn his soul into the final barrier.
But he had not expected to return.
The original vessel spoke again.
**You cannot remain outside.**
Ethan looked at the crack.
"What do you mean?"
**The Door knows you.**
The seventh knock came.
The world went silent.
Noah’s voice sounded very far away.
"Ethan?"
Ethan turned.
Noah was standing beside Professor Voss, but his body had become transparent.
Elena was fading too.
Adrian.
Marianne.
Veyron.
All of them were becoming reflections.
The Door was not opening into the chamber.
The chamber was being pulled toward it.
The connection was rewriting reality.
Ethan looked at his companions.
The Observer whispered:
**If you become the lock, they will live.**
The black crack widened.
**If you remain human, they will be taken.**
Ethan hated the simplicity of the choice.
Sacrifice himself.
Again.
Or allow everyone else to pay.
Veyron looked at him.
"This is what I warned you about."
"You wanted me to become the lock."
"I wanted you to choose it."
"You never wanted the world to survive."
"I wanted the world to survive through you."
Ethan stared at him.
"You still believe I must carry everything."
"No," Veyron said. "I believe someone must."
The original vessel lifted one hand.
The golden chains surrounding the crystal broke apart.
The black crystal opened.
A flood of golden light entered the chamber.
The creature stepped out.
Its white armor was covered in cracks, but its single eye no longer looked empty.
It looked tired.
It looked afraid.
It looked like a prisoner that had been guarding the same door for too long.
The creature approached Ethan.
Everyone else remained frozen.
It placed one hand against Ethan’s chest.
The golden mark opened fully.
The Observer’s voice entered the chamber.
**Do not trust the Door.**
The creature looked at Ethan.
**Do not trust me.**
Ethan frowned.
"Then who do I trust?"
The vessel’s hand moved toward the black sword.
**Choose yourself.**
Ethan understood.
The final lock could not be created by sacrifice alone.
It required consent.
The Observer could not force it.
Veyron could not command it.
The fragments could not decide it.
Only Ethan could.
He looked at the people around him.
Noah was frozen in the middle of a step.
Elena’s eyes were closed.
Professor Voss’s staff remained raised.
Adrian’s hand was around his sword.
They could not choose for him.
Ethan closed his eyes.
He thought about Azeroth.
The man who had tried to control everything.
The man who had believed that the world could be saved if everyone obeyed him.
The man who had turned himself into a weapon.
Then he thought about Ethan.
The weak body.
The academy.
The terrible food.
Noah’s endless questions.
Elena’s anger.
Adrian’s pride.
The life he had not expected to want.
He could become the lock.
But he would not become a prison.
He would not surrender his identity.
He would not allow the world to survive only because one person had been erased.
Ethan opened his eyes.
"I will close the Door."
The golden mark burned.
"But I will not become its prisoner."
The vessel’s eye widened.
Veyron stared at him.
"What are you saying?"
"I am changing the contract."
Ethan raised the black sword.
The Fourth Fragment responded.
He did not cut the Door.
He did not cut the fragments.
He cut the idea that the lock needed one soul.
The blade struck the air.
A wave of black light spread across the chamber.
The six fragments answered.
The Crown divided.
The Witness multiplied.
Knowledge formed new patterns.
The Sword released its authority.
The White Flame above the estate split into seven sparks.
The Sixth Fragment opened.
The original vessel released a golden thread.
All of the powers moved toward the people around Ethan.
Noah’s chest began to glow gold.
Elena’s scar lit with white fire.
Adrian’s sword mark became silver.
Professor Voss’s staff filled with red and violet light.
Marianne’s bloodline awakened.
Even Veyron felt the connection.
His eyes widened.
"What have you done?"
"Shared the lock."
The crack in reality stopped widening.
The things beyond the Door pressed against it.
The chamber trembled.
Ethan felt the pressure spreading through every connection.
No single soul carried the full weight.
But all of them felt a portion.
Noah cried out.
"This hurts!"
Ethan gritted his teeth.
"It is temporary."
"You say that about everything!"
Elena raised her hand.
The white flame formed above her palm.
Adrian drove his sword into the ground.
Professor Voss completed her spell.
Marianne spoke the ancient command of House Frost.
Veyron stood at the center of the network, connected against his will.
The original vessel lifted both arms.
The Observer’s golden eyes opened beyond the Door.
The world remained imperfect.
The lock began to close.
One by one, the golden eyes disappeared.
The black crack shrank.
The seventh knock became softer.
Then quieter.
Then it stopped.
The Door closed.
The chamber fell silent.
The shared connection disappeared.
Everyone collapsed.
Ethan landed on one knee.
His body was shaking.
His Mana Core was damaged, but still intact.
The six fragments were quiet.
The golden mark over his heart had changed.
It was no longer an eye.
It was a circle divided into seven parts.
A shared seal.
Noah lay on his back.
"I hate teamwork."
Ethan looked at him.
"You performed adequately."
"I saved reality."
"You complained while doing it."
"That was emotional support."
Elena slowly stood.
The white flame still floated above her hand.
Her scar had become a small silver line.
"Is the Door closed?"
"For now."
"For how long?"
Ethan looked toward the ceiling.
"Until the shared lock fails."
Everyone became quiet.
Veyron stood apart from them.
The connection had changed him.
The black cracks covering his body had faded.
His expression was empty.
"You included me," he said.
"You were connected."
"You could have excluded me."
"You were part of the seal."
"You trusted me."
"No."
Veyron looked at him.
Ethan continued:
"I used you."
For a moment, Veyron stared.
Then he laughed.
A tired, broken laugh.
"You really have changed."
"Have I?"
"You would have called it strategy before."
"It is still strategy."
"But now you admit it."
Ethan looked at the sealed Door.
"That is the difference."
The original vessel returned to the black crystal.
This time, the crystal did not close completely.
Its golden eye remained visible.
The Observer had not disappeared.
But the vessel was no longer corrupted.
It was watching the boundary again.
Marianne approached Ethan.
"The Sixth Fragment is no longer a prison or a signal."
"What is it now?"
"A gate."
"To the First Door?"
"To the places between the fragments."
Ethan looked toward the faint lights appearing in the distance.
Seven points of light had awakened across the world.
Six fragments.
One shared lock.
The seventh point was different.
It was not a fragment.
It was a location.
A black tower rising from the center of the continent.
Ethan recognized it.
The old capital of the Ashen Empire.
His capital.
The place where Azeroth had once ruled.
The place where the First War had begun.
A message appeared in the air.
**THE SEVENTH FRAGMENT AWAITS.**
Beneath it was a second line.
**THE FINAL MEMORY IS THERE.**
Ethan looked at Veyron.
"You knew."
Veyron nodded.
"The last fragment contains the truth of why you returned."
"What does it represent?"
Veyron’s eyes turned toward the black tower.
"Identity."
The tower lit up.
A figure stood on its highest balcony.
A woman with golden eyes.
Seraphina Crow.
She looked directly toward Ethan through the distance.
Her voice traveled across the shared lock.
"Come back to where it began."
The black tower’s doors opened.
And within its darkness, someone who looked exactly like Ethan was waiting.
