Although having a metallic ship with excellent defensive capabilities and a steampunk engine was certainly a huge advantage in many situations, there were still a few things that it simply could not outperform compared to a standard wooden ship, especially when it came to taking advantage of the natural conditions of the sea. For example, when strong winds were involved, a ship relying entirely on sails could realistically move faster than one powered by an engine, since an engine-powered ship carried considerably more weight than a standard wooden vessel that had been designed to remain relatively light and make full use of the wind pushing against its sails. It was one of those situations where having something more advanced did not automatically mean that it was better at absolutely everything.

Because of that, it was actually possible that even though Madeline and I had been days apart from each other, she could still manage to reach us before we arrived at the Mermaid Kingdom. My ship was much more technologically advanced than hers, but the difference in weight and the conditions of the sea gave her ship a rather convenient advantage. Apparently, even steampunk technology had its limits when Mother Nature decided to participate in the competition.

Judging by the way she was smiling, it seemed like she had come all this way because she had information that she considered important enough to deliver personally. It was the sort of expression that made me suspicious before she had even said anything else, although I had to admit that she seemed genuinely excited about whatever she had discovered.

"What is it?" I asked her.

"You gotta pay to find out what kind of information I have first," she replied casually. "You know what I want, right?"

Well, judging from what she was saying, it seemed that she had come here specifically to offer me information in exchange for sex, which was certainly one hell of a payment method. Besides, knowing Madeline, she probably would not have gone through all this trouble if she did not have something worthwhile to tell me.

"Alright, then. Come with me to my room, and let's get to it already."

I asked her, raising an eyebrow because she seemed far too eager to collect her payment before even telling me what I was supposedly paying for. It almost felt like she had been waiting for an excuse to make this offer, and the fact that she was already trying to drag me away made that suspicion considerably harder to ignore.

She stared at me for a moment, looking slightly annoyed as if my question had somehow offended her, before finally answering me. Her expression suggested that she genuinely could not understand why I would question the value of information she had traveled all this way to deliver, although I was not exactly going to blindly trust her just because she had shown up with a confident smile.

"I wouldn't have thought of doing this if I didn't believe that the information was actually very useful to you," she said. "Considering the fact that you are currently up against both the Republic and the Empire, and considering that those two countries are undoubtedly involved in some sort of conflict here in the Great Ocean, I think this information could be absolutely useful to you."

Since she had specifically mentioned the Republic and the Empire, it was safe to assume that whatever information she had managed to obtain involved those two countries in some way. That immediately made me more interested.

Well, I suppose it was only natural for me to give in, especially if the information really was as important as she made it sound.
