Chapter 262. Individual Battles
First Son Hiler admitted that he had been wrong.
“I never imagined I would meet a rival after coming to the West. This is rather good.”
“…….”
Instead of answering, Cos repeatedly swept the edge of her hand through the air. Each motion sent wind as sharp as a blade fresh from the whetstone toward the First Son.
“These false blades cannot defeat a real one.”
The First Son’s gray sword clashed with the Wind Blades.
WHOOSH—!!
The sound of his swing was heavy. Small Bone Wyverns accompanied the sword strike that made that sound, batting the Wind Blades aside.
Bone Wyverns large and small followed every one of his strikes, creating countless complications.
Even blocking or dodging the slash from the gray blade did not end it. The Bone Wyverns that broke away from it were another problem.
It felt like having a single fireball split into dozens of tiny fireballs and come flying at her. It was a thoroughly filthy feeling.
“…Millesdusk is just as I heard. You don’t fight cleanly.”
“Perhaps it seems that way to someone who would grimace at the mere smell of blood.”
“I’m only talking about how you fight.”
As she answered, she traced a smooth circle with both arms.
She created an air current along the path of her fingertips. The circular wind spread like a shock wave when she clapped her hands.
The Bone Wyverns trying to surround her on every side were driven far away by the compressed gust.
Hiler smiled so clearly that it showed in the reflection on his blade.
“So it is true that no other Wisdom mage can match you in Defensive Magic.”
“…The prisoners you took must have been quite talkative.”
“Perhaps. Whether they spoke freely or held their tongues does not change the fact that what comes next will be entertaining.”
Hiler charged again.
He had the range of his flying sword strikes, but they alone would not solve this.
There was little chance of winning a prolonged battle at range against a mage. He had to make full use of his Bone Wyvern’s speed and close the distance.
Cos knew that simple first task, one he absolutely had to accomplish, as well.
The difference was that her task was the opposite.
“I won’t let you get close.”
Cos’s wind swirled around her white wyvern’s wings. Now the wyvern would no longer be hindered by the fierce winds high in the sky; they would only help it.
The headwind vanished, leaving only wind pushing its back and wings. It became far faster than before.
But a game of tag was not played alone.
“Then I need only block your path.”
The Bone Wyverns Cos had blown away moments ago quickly formed ranks again.
Like the Tower of the Sky over there, they closed the gaps between one another and formed a single wall. Cos did not stop, however.
“Defensive Magic isn’t all I know.”
No one reached the 7th Circle with such a soft heart.
The 7th Circle, where a mage began to be recognized as truly high level, was a time of awakening to one’s own attribute.
“A 7th Circle mage can turn Defensive Magic into offensive magic, too. Do you know what that means?”
“Show me what it means, then.”
“I’ll give you a full taste.”
“And I will give you a taste of mine.”
The First Son launched another sword strike. It was a much heavier blow than before.
Five Bone Wyverns revolved around the strike, the undead themselves transformed into part of it.
Bone Wyverns barred the way ahead, while behind her, the strike looked ready to slice off her wyvern’s tail at any moment.
First Daughter Cos found herself smiling at the difficult problem he had personally arranged in front of and behind her.
“Haha.”
She could not help it. The more suffocating the situation, the freer she became.
SHHHHHHH—
As always, a single current of wind gathered above her hand.
Fire Attribute magic began with a spark as small as a match flame, and Water Attribute magic began with a drop of water.
The other attributes were the same, and Wind Attribute was no different.
Wind she could not see, but which unquestionably existed, rested in her palm.
SHWOOOOOOSH—
The wind that would answer the problem her opponent had posed drew a circle of its own. Space rippled within it.
For it was a kind of door: a frame through which something from outside this dimension could step.
“This was a move I’d prepared for your Fifth Son. Looks like you’ll be the first to see it instead.”
SHRIIIING—!!
The straight beam of white light split in every direction like a flower bursting into bloom.
It resembled the light Ventus had shown when he revealed himself earlier, but it was by no means the same. The effect of the light alone made that clear.
RATATATAT—
Every undead touched by the light was pierced through and lost its strength.
They were flung away like demons being purified, unable to remain in the sky, and fell.
The more powerful sword strike was shot down and canceled out as well. The reason revealed itself.
“…A spirit.”
“You recognize him.”
Something stood behind Cos.
He looked as though a storm had been sculpted into a male form, and he was larger than Cos and her wyvern combined.
“Jean, a high-level Wind-Attribute Spirit. Can you solve this problem right now?”
The high-level Wind-Attribute Spirit swung both arms violently, his body like storm clouds and his arms wrapped in a tempest.
It had not been her imagination that the surrounding wind seemed to be flowing toward the spirit all this time.
“…Damn it.”
The Bone Wyverns wobbled in midair, unable to keep their balance.
Only the one carrying the First Son barely held on, and even that was a matter of time.
“You called us rivals earlier. I’ll show you just how wrong you were.”
Jean moved with Cos’s hand.
She shaped her fingers into a pretend gun, and fearsome wind gathered at Jean’s fingertips.
“Bang.”
BOOM—!!
An air cannon struck the First Son before he could react.
The force and pressure of the wind were enough to blow him off his Bone Wyvern, sending him falling.
Of course, he did not take the blow helplessly.
“Impressive. You put on armor in that brief instant.”
Half of the Death Knight’s armor had been blown away by the air cannon, but it had protected his eardrums and bones.
He somehow stopped his fall by catching a ride on another Bone Wyvern.
“Yes. You are a rather interesting opponent yourself. Though not as interesting as the youngest.”
Even as he spoke, pieces of the Death Knight’s armor pattered away. All that from one attack.
The First Son sensed that, now his opponent had shown her card, it was no longer time for him to hide his own.
“…The Fifth Son?”
Cos, who had reacted to every mention of the youngest, looked at him again. Hiler nodded and set his stance atop the Bone Wyvern.
He raised his sword with one hand and gripped that wrist with the other. Without even that support, it would break.
What he intended to use was beyond comparison with mixing Bone Wyverns into his sword strikes.
“I also have a technique I prepared to use on the youngest. Unfortunately, just like yours, its first recipient will change.”
“So you still think we’re evenly matched.”
“No. I have changed my mind.”
CRRRRACK—
The First Son drew his body back.
“If a move prepared for the youngest is ‘only’ something like that, you are not even a match for me as I am now.”
As though drawing a bowstring, he pulled his sword arm back as far as it would go.
Cos could not even laugh at that.
“You nearly went crashing into the ground from a flick of my finger, yet you can still talk. Then try taking another one.”
The First Daughter’s finger, and Jean’s hand, took aim at the First Son once more.
“Bang.”
With a puff of breath, she fired a Wind Bullet.
BOOOOM—!!
The First Son was shot down again and fell once more. This time, even his Bone Wyvern was smashed, leaving him nothing to remount.
The Death Knight armor, which had retained its shape despite the damage, was now unrecognizable.
His eardrums rang, the buzz reverberated through his brain, and his nose began to bleed.
His body fell lower and lower, but he never relaxed his stance.
Otherwise, all the effort he had spent concentrating instead of defending himself would have been for nothing.
He needed to look straight at his enemy and adjust his stance now. For some reason, though, the First Son’s gray eyes turned toward the youngest instead of Cos.
He looked at the youngest’s Clone standing on the Black Ship behind her. The Clone’s Bloodshot eyes would convey this attack to the original.
“See the world with three pairs of eyes, and grasp the world with three pairs of arms.”
One pair of arms was not enough. He needed three pairs for the sword strike to come.
CRAAACK—
Thick arms of white bone seized the sword. One pair of hands held the hilt, another held the hands gripping it, and the next held the hands above them.
Only then did he feel any stability. Only then was he certain he could pour this immense thing into his sword.
“Do not die. There is much I wish to test on you.”
The six hands and their strength moved as one with the swordsman, swinging the sword.
As always, he formed a sword strike. As always, a dragon surged up in its wake.
ROOOAR—!!!
A Bone Dragon. Far from merely following the sword strike, the Bone Dragon was so enormous it could have swallowed the strike whole as it spiraled upward.
***
“Melaine. Don’t you feel like we’re the only ones being left out?”
Nod, nod.
Third Daughter Melaine agreed emphatically with her big sister Melisende.
“Our brother is playing with Wisdom’s First Daughter, the strongest of their blood relatives beneath the Family Head, and Jamie is playing with the Third Son.”
Second Daughter Melisende gave a faint sigh as the Third Daughter carried her on her back.
“Why are we the only ones stuck with this riffraff?”
Standing on a swarm of blue-gray butterflies, the daughters looked at the mages encircling them.
There was no one of Wisdom’s direct bloodline among them. There might have been collateral relatives, but they had no interest in such half-rate kin.
Three members of Wisdom’s direct bloodline. Not one of the three was here. That alone concerned them, and it made them angry.
“You there. Withdraw and bring the Second Daughter here. Then I’ll let you live.”
It was an exceptionally merciful offer from a blood relative of Millesdusk who had come to wage a war of conquest, but the other side rejected it.
“Do not be absurd. Do you think the lady is someone the likes of you can see whenever you please?”
“The likes of us.”
She found herself repeating the vulgar words she had not heard in a long time.
It was strange, after all. The ones who deserved to be called ‘the likes of you’ were the trash right in front of her.
“Who might you be, to call us ‘the likes of you’?”
“I am the Master of the Tower of the Sky. And here with me are the Sky Mages who guard Wisdom’s border, Magic Tower mages, and members of the collateral bloodline.”
The Second Daughter idly scratched at her ear. His words were as trivial as the buzzing of an insect, and she could think of nothing to say.
The Tower of the Sky this, its master that, Sky something, Magic Tower something. They were all much the same.
“So after the mosquitoes come the flies. You sure took a long time to say it.”
“…You can only speak that way for now.”
“Are those your last words?”
The blue-gray butterflies moved.
They flew in a flock like birds, but packed far closer together, and their numbers were beyond counting.
The mosquitoes and flies did not retreat in fear. More precisely, they were afraid, but they had something to rely on, so they held their ground.
The Master of the Tower of the Sky shouted.
“Everyone, take out the Nullifying Decree Chains!”
