Chapter 254: Chapter 149: Directly Transferring a Company to Chen Mo for Free

Chen Mo considered Old Chen’s words for a moment.

Frankly, he hadn’t expected Old Chen to be so generous.

The wedding was off, yet he was still willing to give a dowry worth ten times the betrothal gift.

His betrothal gift hadn’t been a small sum, either—a full five million.

A dowry ten times that amount was fifty million!

Even after keeping his five million betrothal gift, they’d still have to come up with another forty-five million.

’He’s probably just afraid of offending people.’

Chen Mo had a pretty good idea why.

Old Chen and his wife were primarily afraid of offending the men who had been on matchmaking dates with Chen Shuwan before him.

Or more accurately, they were afraid of offending the parents of those men.

The fact that Old Chen and his wife had looked down on his own family’s financial standing was a dead giveaway. The men who had come before him for Chen Shuwan must have come from well-off families.

They might not have been wealthier than the Chen Family, but they were at least on the same level.

Some of them might have even had business partnerships with their family.

Offending one or two of those families might be manageable, but if they angered all of them, how would they stay in business?

The money they’d lose would far exceed the cost of the dowry.

Besides, some of those people held government positions. If one of them decided to make trouble for you at a critical moment, you’d have nowhere to turn.

So, compared to offending all those people, it was understandable that Old Chen was willing to pay to make the problem go away.

After all, he had already transferred the betrothal gift, and he had an inside agent, Chen Shuwan, helping him out.

Their only choice was to stick to the original agreement: give him a dowry worth ten times the betrothal gift and put the whole affair to rest.

"Chen Mo, it was fate that brought us together. And while things took an unexpected turn, this isn’t what any of us wanted."

"I’ll keep your betrothal gift, and you take the dowry. You and I can still be on good terms. Let’s just let this matter go. What do you say?"

Seeing Chen Mo still contemplating, Old Chen took a deep breath and spoke again, his tone much more humble.

"That’s right, Chen Mo. It was all fated. You can come over and visit anytime in the future. Just make yourself at home."

Zhou Ru, standing beside him, also looked at Chen Mo and forced a smile.

Chen Mo scoffed internally at their words.

’I’ll take the dowry, of course. As for all this talk about staying on good terms and visiting... I have no intention of doing any of that.’

He had no such desire.

"I have no objection."

Not giving it any more thought, Chen Mo nodded, accepting Old Chen’s proposed solution.

A fifty million dowry. Even after subtracting the five million for his betrothal gift, he’d still clear forty-five million.

Waiting a few days to make the public announcement was fine, too. It was only a few days, after all. It wouldn’t make a difference.

"Chen Mo, it’s a shame she’s so disobedient. You would have made a fine son-in-law."

When Chen Mo agreed, Old Chen finally let out a long sigh of relief, a genuine smile finally breaking through.

"That’s right. I was very pleased with you that day. It’s a shame it wasn’t meant to be."

The smile on Zhou Ru’s face no longer looked so forced as she added, her sentiment just as hollow, "A real shame."

"It’s all up to fate."

Chen Mo just gave a faint smile.

’Good thing I only came for the dowry.’

’If I’d actually been interested in their daughter, this family would have driven me to an early grave.’

"Chen Mo, shall we sign an agreement?"

Old Chen quickly got down to business. This couldn’t be a mere verbal agreement.

It had to be spelled out clearly in black and white.

As a businessman, he knew that only a written contract could guarantee the highest level of confidentiality.

As for a verbal promise, who could guarantee Chen Mo wouldn’t run his mouth after he got the money?

"Fine."

Chen Mo, of course, had no objection.

’I’ve signed who knows how many of these things before.’

Before signing, however, the three of them discussed the terms of the agreement.

"The fifty million dowry can’t all be in cash. You have to understand," Old Chen stated to Chen Mo in advance.

As a businessman, he had more important uses for such a large sum of cash.

"No problem."

Chen Mo shrugged to show he understood.

From his perspective, as long as the total value of the dowry reached fifty million, he would accept it.

It didn’t necessarily have to be fifty million in cash.

After all, fifty million wasn’t five million; it wasn’t that easy to produce.

"Actually, the day you came to our home with the betrothal gift, my wife and I discussed the dowry."

"I never expected that after everything that happened, we’d end up needing the plan after all."

A bitter smile crossed Old Chen’s face as he seemed to recall something.

Zhou Ru’s expression was also complicated; that night, they had truly been preparing a dowry worth ten times the betrothal gift.

She never imagined it would be given away like this.

"I have a venture capital firm I can transfer to you. You’ll get one hundred percent of the shares. I’ll value it at twenty million for you, but it’s actually worth more."

"You can hire a professional accounting firm for a financial audit, due diligence, a corporate valuation, and so on. I’ll cover the fees."

Old Chen didn’t make any changes, offering the dowry exactly as he and his wife had previously discussed.

He was offering to directly transfer a venture capital firm into Chen Mo’s name.

They had originally thought it was a perfect match since Chen Mo worked in finance. They happened to own a venture capital firm, but their investment acumen was limited, and it wasn’t developing well.

So they had decided to just give it to Chen Mo and let him run it.

The company’s financials were sound, and it had no debt.

Its valuation was actually a bit over twenty million, but they’d figured that since it was for their son-in-law, they would just count it as twenty million.

But now... well, never mind.

"Acceptable."

Chen Mo was somewhat surprised to hear this, but he nodded anyway.

’I had been planning to start a company in the stocks and securities business.’

’But a venture capital firm is fine, too. Who knows, maybe investing can also activate my constitution?’

’The returns might even be higher than stocks.’

"I have a property in my name. While it’s not in a prime location, it’s still within the inner ring road."
