Three Systems Made the Fake Heiress Unstoppable

Chapter 227: Miles York Gets Angry

  • Next Chapter

5:00 p.m.

“Sophie Lane, didn’t I give you the money? Why did you still sell us out?” The moment Miles York saw Sophie Lane, his anger flared, and he confronted her directly.

Because of her broken promise, his stock prices had plummeted.

No one knew how much effort he had put into building the company to its current state. He had even humbled himself like a servant before his former daughter. But now, because the person in front of him couldn’t keep her word, everything had gone back to square one.

Compared to Miles’s anger, Sophie wasn’t afraid at all. She even looked rather indifferent as she mocked him, “I didn’t want to sell you out either, but who told your precious daughter to try and kill me?”

“Impossible,” Miles denied it outright. He had already resolved the matter and had Alice Cole talk to Brooke York about stopping this nonsense. How could she still do something like that?

“I originally wasn’t going to let Brooke off the hook, but I chose not to go through with it because you gave me a million. You are a good father. But clearly, Brooke York is not a good daughter.”

“I don’t understand what you’re talking about. Let me tell you, you’re just going back on your word. There’s no need to find any other excuses. It’s absolutely impossible for my daughter to do such a thing. Besides, if she were going to do that, why would I have given you the money?”

Miles didn’t believe Sophie’s words at all. He felt there was absolutely no need for Brooke to do something so redundant. Furthermore, he had spoken to Alice, and Alice had assured him that she had talked to Brooke, who promised not to do anything that would hurt others. Therefore, it had to be Sophie making up excuses.

“Fine. Since you don’t believe me, I have nothing more to say. Here is the one million you gave me. I’m returning it to you. Consider it my refund for breaking my promise.” Sophie placed the bank card Miles had given her on the table and prepared to leave.

“You want to leave before you’ve even explained yourself clearly? You still haven’t told me why you broke your word. Do you have any idea how much my company’s stock has fallen because of you? Do you know how much we’ve lost? How much money that is? Do you really think a mere one million can offset that?”

“Then what do you mean, Mr. York? Are you asking me to compensate you with even more money? Since you want to play it that way, then my only option is to call the police. I’ll have them investigate whether your daughter, Brooke York, actually hired people to kill me. Don’t blame me when that happens.”

The reason Sophie hadn’t called the police was that back when Miles showed up with a million to buy her university enrollment quota, he had actually saved her life in disguise. If it hadn’t been for Miles, she wouldn’t have been able to attend that university anyway, and she would have been sold to an old bachelor in her village.

Thankfully, he had shown up with a million and discussed it with her first. In the end, with half a million in her hands and the other half given to her family, she was finally able to leave that remote mountain village and come to the city with her share of the money.

It was precisely out of respect for him, knowing that Brooke was his only daughter, that she hadn’t thought about going to the police. She had planned to merely expose the truth about her university spot being stolen and return the one million to Miles. That way, they would be even.

She hadn’t expected Miles to actually blame her. It truly chilled her to the bone.

Seeing Sophie speak so firmly, even volunteering to bring in the police, Miles was already beginning to believe her. However, unwilling to give up hope, he asked once more, “Is everything you said true? Did my daughter, Brooke, really hire people to kill you?”

“Mr. York, is there any need for me to joke about something like this? If I were making this up, couldn’t you sue me for defamation? There’s no reason for me to invite trouble upon myself, right?

“Besides, you know where I come from, and you know how difficult my past was. The reason I asked you for another million was because I couldn’t survive in this city anymore.

“I never expected to be scammed out of my money here. The half a million you gave me was completely swindled away. I thought about calling you to ask for more, but after all, you are a married man. It wouldn’t be appropriate for us to be in frequent contact, so I went to ask Brooke for it instead.

“But I never imagined she would actually want me dead.”

Here, Sophie was lying. In reality, she had approached Brooke specifically to bully her. Who told Brooke’s family to be so rich? They had bought her degree and only given her a mere one million. And the reason she hadn’t gone to Miles was that she wanted to leave a good impression on him. She planned to wait until she had absolutely no other options before acting pitiful in front of him to get more money.

As for why she was setting Brooke up now, it was because she knew that ever since Brooke returned, Chloe York’s life had been difficult. Therefore, she definitely wanted to stand up for her savior.

“I have a clear understanding of the situation now,” Miles said. “Rest assured, this won’t happen again. You are absolutely safe here.”

“I wouldn’t dare trust your guarantee, Mr. York. You have no idea how terrifying your daughter’s expression was that day, especially when she ordered those men to defile me first before killing me.”

Hearing that Brooke had even ordered someone to be defiled, Miles was truly shocked to his core. How could she do such a thing?

“I can assure you that I mean what I say,” Miles said. “Moreover, you should keep this one million. If you ever run out of money in the future, come find me. Additionally, I can introduce you to a job.”

“There’s no need for a job,” Sophie replied. “I’ll listen to you and take this one million. I’ll try my best to stay out of your sight from now on, and I’ll do my best not to bother you again. I’ll also be a bit more vigilant. After all, I’ve already suffered a loss once; I can’t let myself be scammed out of my money again, right?” With that, she took the bank card.

Seeing Sophie take the card, Miles was finally able to relax. As long as she accepted the money, she wouldn’t voluntarily go to the police to report that his daughter had hired people to kill her. Otherwise, why would he insist on her taking the one million? Naturally, Sophie also knew that this money was hush money for yet another incident.

Having resolved the issue with Sophie, Miles headed straight home.

At this time, only Alice Cole was home. She was quite surprised to see him return so early.

“Why are you back so early today?”

“Where is Brooke York?”

“She’s upstairs. Honestly, look at you—coming home with such a long face. Did something go wrong at work again? No matter how bad things get, you shouldn’t bring your mood home with you.”

“Tell her to come down.”

“Tell her to come down for what? She’s staying in her room and finally managed to fall asleep. You want to wake her up? It’s not like you don’t know what she’s been through recently.

“If you ask me, instead of wasting time here, you should hurry up and deal with that Sophie Lane girl properly. Just look at what she’s done to our daughter.”

“Do you not understand what I’m saying? I said, get her down here right this instant.”
