Transformed into a Penguin: My Evolution Penguin System
Chapter 280: The Graveback Answered Jiang’s Stolen Call
The answer lifted a city.
Two knocks rolled through the graveback again. A suspended keep rose with the animal’s spine, tore half its tendon bridge from a black trunk, and swung over open road with people still on its balconies.
Bone Orchard fighters ran toward the falling end.
Raska ran the other way.
She dragged Jiang under the shelter of a root while his high-root line burned across the torn coat.
"Root down!" she shouted.
Every guild fighter dropped flat or hooked into black bark. The graveback’s next convulsion traveled from its buried shoulder to its tail, turning the orchard into a wave of bone, glass, and hanging homes.
Maelin’s hall took the wave broadside.
Its temporary brace held. The boarding branch did not.
Black wood split beneath the seated flight rib. The hall rolled away from the graveback, and its wounded wing opened under weight it could no longer carry.
Myrn chose the first impact.
The grafted road-beast folded her injured sound wing, drove her shoulder against the hall’s lower ribs, and chose the impact before Sivra could reach the harness.
Sivra did not direct her.
She crawled down Myrn’s flank, found the sound-line tying beast to hall, and cut it loose before the rolling structure could use Myrn as an anchor.
Inside the clear wall, Hest threw his body across the yoke. Valea cut a bent strut away from his legs and took its weight on a shoulder already bleeding through her coat.
Kessa remained at the wounded joint.
Maelin’s blade stayed inside her bounded cut. When a secondary graft vine tightened toward the founder wound, she sliced it before the pull could reach the dead founder ribs.
The hall dropped lower.
Myrn followed by choice and caught it again.
Jiang saw every movement from the black root, but the graveback’s living plate struck his breast before he could decide which disaster to watch.
Jiang wanted Aylin to pull him back through the channel and close the graft behind him. The next fixed pair made leaving impossible; the stolen call would stay buried in the carrier.
Two more knocks entered him.
The weight, pause, and return never varied.
The stolen rhythm had found a body large enough to shake cities with it.
Raska climbed toward the seam where the feather and broken frame had disappeared. A fighter threw her a pruning saw on a tendon cord. She caught it with one hand.
"I cut the plate open," she said. "You leave before it bucks."
"You do not know what you are cutting."
"I know the carrier I ride."
"Your carrier took your spear."
"The orchard took the spear."
"The orchard is inside it now."
Raska put the saw teeth against the warm seam.
Jiang pressed his breast flat to the living plate.
Splitflow gave him contact and nothing beyond it.
One pressure entered from the broken graft. It arrived in paired blows that never changed, forcing inward along the path of the feather.
Another pressure came from the flesh around it and twisted beneath Jiang’s breast.
It gathered under the dead frame, broke apart around a buried obstruction, and pushed toward the surface at a different angle each time. The living response could not clear the fixed path, but it never repeated it.
"Wait before you cut," Jiang said.
Raska’s saw had already marked the plate. "You have a better injury?"
"It is not answering me."
The paired knocks came again. Beneath them, the changing pressure struck the frame from below.
"The graft is making it repeat the call," Jiang said. "The animal is trying to push the call out."
Raska looked from him to the seam.
"Splitflow cannot tell you intent."
"It reads pressure. One keeps entering the same way. The rest keeps changing to get around it."
"You may only be feeling pain."
"Pain is allowed to refuse."
A fresh heave rolled through the graveback.
High-root tightened before Jiang slid. Aylin had braced the far end through the pruning channel, keeping him against the plate without pulling him away from the contact.
Raska drove her heel hooks into bark.
"When will the pressure push?"
"I cannot see the next one."
"You remain an exceptionally useful bird."
"Keep the saw ready."
Another fixed pair traveled inward.
Living flesh gathered beneath it. Jiang felt the pressure split around the old obstruction, bunch under the broken frame, and turn toward Raska’s marked seam.
"Now, pull with it," Jiang said.
At his call, Raska pulled the saw.
The saw opened black bark and stopped at living tissue. Warm blood sheeted over its teeth. The graveback’s outward pressure hit the cut from below and forced the seam apart without letting the saw travel deeper.
Broken flight bone appeared between the plates.
An older object rose behind it.
A white hook lay buried under the frame, not dead bone and not orchard growth. Living tissue had closed around its barbed end long ago. Three branches split from its buried shaft.
One branch curved like a flight spar.
One flattened like a swimmer’s fin.
One ended in a joint built to dig.
The graveback had grown around all three.
Raska forgot the saw for half a breath.
"That was not ours," she said.
The fixed rhythm struck the old hook.
All three buried branches moved together.
Across the orchard, black roots copied the motion. Hanging bridges lifted toward flight, twisted toward water that was not there, and drove bone tips down into the graveback’s own back.
One tip punched through a rescue line.
The suspended keep began to fall again.
A Bone Orchard fighter on its roof threw her tendon cord across the gap. Two others caught it from a neighboring bridge, but the load dragged all three toward the edge.
Raska raised her voice above splitting bridges. "Cut down the entire marrow crown!"
Fighters around the central black trunk hesitated.
The crown held clear fruit full of roads their guild had spent generations carrying. It also fed every copied root descending into the warm seams between plates.
Raska did not repeat herself.
She planted the saw in the seam, caught the cord of the nearest crown blade, and pulled first.
Bone Orchard fighters joined her.
Curved blades bit through the black crown above them. Clear fruit burst as branches fell, spilling cities, rivers, guild roads, and one distant red lantern across the graveback in sheets of light.
The orchard lost half its sky.
All copied roots slackened with it.
Maelin’s brace slackened with them.
Kessa felt it before Jiang saw the hall drop.
She turned Maelin’s blade and cut the graft back to the single dead rib already seated in her first channel. Every secondary vine tore free.
Maelin’s wounded wing opened under the loss.
Hest took the yoke lower. Valea kicked the loose strut through the clear wall before it could spear him. Sivra wrapped the cut sound-line around her own waist and jumped from Myrn onto the hall.
Myrn owed none of them another impact.
Myrn gave them one more impact anyway.
Her shoulder met the lower ribs and drove the hall toward the remaining boarding branch. The branch bent, the dead flight rib groaned, and Kessa held her bounded cut instead of reaching for the founder wound.
"One rib!" Kessa shouted across the gap. "Nothing else!"
Raska heard her from the living seam.
"Then keep that one alive!"
"The rib was already dead!"
"That explains the way you hold it!"
The graveback bucked hard enough to end the argument.
Jiang’s unstable foot lost the bark. High-root kept his breast against the plate while the rest of him swung. His failed wing struck the warm seam, and pain shot across his shoulder.
The changing pressure gathered again.
Broken false-wing bone had caught under the old white hook. Jiang’s feather remained trapped in black sap between them, driving the fixed pair deeper each time living flesh tried to expel both.
"The frame is barbed on the old thing," he said.
Raska leaned over the cut. "Can you reach it?"
"With the beak you watched split?"
"I can offer a worse tool."
"I have met your tools."
Jiang wedged his sound foot against the open plate. Aylin gave him one span of slack without receiving a signal. She could feel him pushing toward the cut and chose not to turn that movement into a retreat.
He lowered his head into the seam.
Heat struck his face. Graveback blood ran over his beak and filled the new split. Jiang bit the nearest piece of dead frame before the pain could convince him to stop.
Raska braced the saw against the old hook without cutting living tissue.
"When it pushes," she said.
Jiang kept his breast on the plate.
Another fixed pair entered the seam.
Living pressure changed around it.
"Now, lift the frame," Jiang said.
Raska levered upward while Jiang clamped down and pulled.
The broken frame came free one spar at a time. Black sap stretched after it. His stolen feather appeared inside the strand, shaft bent but whole.
The old hook tried to follow.
Living flesh held the old hook in place.
Jiang released the frame before their leverage could tear the buried branch through the carrier’s back.
Raska caught the dead bone and rolled away from the seam. Jiang snapped at the black strand. His first bite crushed the feather shaft against the plate. His second tore the marked vane loose from the sap.
The fixed knocks broke rhythm once and did not return.
Unblocked living pressure surged outward through the cut.
Blood, black sap, and the crushed feather washed from the seam. Bone Orchard fighters hooked the contaminated frame and dragged it onto the falling crown.
Raska cut the last crown root herself.
Dead flight bone, copied vines, broken false wing, and Jiang’s marked feather fell together into open road. Reflected cities faded from the severed fruit as the whole black crown turned below them and disappeared.
At last, the graveback stopped arching.
Its next movement traveled slowly beneath Jiang’s breast. It changed around the old white hook, widened through living tissue, and rolled down the animal’s spine without repeating Jiang’s call.
He could not name an intention inside it.
He could feel the difference between a body being forced and a body moving again.
Behind them, Maelin’s hall settled against the surviving branch.
Myrn stepped away before anyone could mistake help for harness. Sivra remained on the hall by her own cut line. Hest and Valea kept the yoke. Kessa drew Maelin’s blade from the joint and left only the bounded dead rib supporting it.
"The rib stays until the next safe cut," Kessa called.
Raska sat beside the open seam, breathing hard. "One road. Then I take back what remains mine."
"Maelin’s hall remains ours to carry."
"I did not ask for it."
"Your face asks without permission."
Jiang lifted his aching head.
Raska looked at him. "I regret teaching either of you that."
High-root moved twice against his coat. Aylin was still there.
The brief graft warmth had vanished. No rest had occurred. The locked weight of Starcurrent Keel remained under his cold breast, and the System offered nothing for refusing a wing that had never been his.
Raska reached into the opened plate without touching the old hook. She wiped blood from one white branch and exposed a row of scars beneath it.
Each scar ended where a different body plan began.
"The orchard grew after we found the carrier," she said. "This wound was already closed."
Jiang studied the flight spar, the fin, and the digging joint forced to share one buried shaft.
The graveback had not chosen badly.
Someone had forced three evolution paths into one living body and left it alive between them.
