Chapter 343: The Original Was Missing From Every Version

  • Next Chapter

Four record packets surrounded an empty square on the floor.

Hessa had placed them low enough for Jiang to inspect without Human Form. He waddled around the square, pressed each packet seal with his beak, and found the fifth position marked ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT.

The position contained nothing.

"Best-behaved source in the room," Jiang said. "It has made no claims at all."

Conti crouched beside the board. "Keep admiring it. The other four have dates, copyists, editors, and opinions."

Packet A represented JS246 4to, the sole surviving witness for Version A. Its manuscript date was1792. The copyist, Reverend Snorri Bjornsson at Husafell, had described his source as a manuscript written by Jon Gudmundsson.

That description remained a copyist claim. It did not place Jon’s hand on the1792 pages.

Packet B held two lanes. B1 represented Lbs724 4to, probably copied in the1720s with its author listed as unknown. B2 represented Lbs1430a 4to, copied around1760 and substantially aligned with B1.

The remaining packets represented the1950 fused edition and the2015 multilingual edition. One joined the versions and exposed vocabulary differences through editorial notes. The other presented them separately through modern editions and translations.

Aylin read the dates twice. "The nearest surviving B copy may still be more than a century after the killings."

"Yes," Conti said. "And A is later still."

"Yet scholars think both versions may be Jon’s?"

"Both are attributed to him in the textual study. Whether he expanded a short account or shortened a long one remains unresolved."

Jiang tapped the empty square. His beak made a cleaner sound there than it had against the packets.

"So the original is absent, the order of revision is absent, and his direct voice is absent. We are rich in absence."

"You are finally qualified for archival work," Hessa said.

The joke gave Jiang time to look at the acquisition audit waiting above the board.

[ELIGIBILITY AUDIT]

[Question:what returns when the diver does not?]

[Required proof:exterior closure independent of diver]

[Body recovery proof0]

[Ability acquired0]

Memory Dive had accepted Jiang’s voluntary exit and his source-boundary isolation. Neither proof answered what happened if he lost the ability to choose. His present body lacked hands, and an immersive interval removed access even to his beak.

An ability that depended on the unconscious user pressing his own stop was a coffin with excellent instructions.

Hessa prepared an observerless comparison. Jiang would remain awake on the Earth floor. The reconstruction would display only manuscript metadata and indexed agreement fields on the exterior surface. Hessa alone held the stop.

Aylin held no stop authority for this interval. She held the return card and watched Jiang’s current body for any stolen response, involuntary orientation, or pressure change.

"If I become charming, assume contamination," Jiang said.

"That would require a measurable change," Aylin replied.

Conti coughed into his sleeve. Hessa recorded local humor damage0.

The comparison opened above the board as four narrow lanes.

Version A displayed its1792 copy date beside the described1615 event. The two dates occupied separate columns. Between them lay a transmission gap the system refused to fill.

Version B divided into B1 and B2. Their substantial agreement received one shared marker. Neither marker became an original manuscript.

[VERSION LANES]

[A copy date1792 | event date1615]

[B1 copy date:probable1720s | event date1615]

[B2 copy date:around1760 | event date1615]

[B1-B2 substantial alignment1]

[Autograph proof0]

[Revision order0]

The1950 lane joined A and B on an editorial surface. The2015 lane kept both versions separate and added modern language columns. Jiang could see where a translated sentence belonged, but the sentence gained no historical mouth.

At00:07, the claimant branch appeared outside Version A.

It carried the quarantined sentence from the prior test: SURVIVOR RECOGNIZES SELF. The words had no shelfmark, copy date, or position in either textual version.

[EXTERNAL CLAIMANT BRANCH]

[Source lane attachment0/4]

[Copy date0 | historical voice0]

[Exact survivor0 | exact shore0]

[Current Jiang response0]

The branch tested the1792 lane, then the B1 lane. Both rejected it. It moved down the derivative side of the board and paused against the modern translation column.

Translation gave the claimant readable words. It still gave those words no1615 speaker.

Jiang watched from the floor with both feet planted and his tail clear. Current awareness remained continuous. Quiet Brood produced no orientation pull. Pressure stayed60.

At00:13, the claimant abandoned the wreck row.

It moved toward the indexed sequence of later October killings shared by the scholarly apparatus. A black mark followed the branch across the derivative lane, stopping before every exact-victim field.

[Identity0 | soul0 | guilt0]

The move established direction, not attachment. The claimant could be following familiar words, a modern index, the pressure source, or an instruction outside every packet.

Hessa let the display run three more seconds. The branch pressed the first blank victim row and gained nothing.

Conti requested a derivative-lane test before closure. Hessa locked the physical A and B packets, then removed the2015 modern translation from the comparison surface.

The readable claimant sentence broke into an unlabeled external mark. Its movement toward the October sequence continued. Removing modern English had removed its displayed words, not the branch carrying them.

"It borrowed the language," Aylin said. "It did not arrive through it."

Conti recorded that as an inference with source status0. A branch that survived translation withdrawal could still have copied words earlier or received them through an unselected channel.

Hessa removed the1950 fused edition next. Version A and the B witnesses remained separated. The external mark shifted between them without entering either lane.

[FUSED EDITION WITHDRAWAL]

The comparison now held only later manuscript witnesses and the empty original square. The claimant still preferred the indexed October sequence, but no surviving copy accepted it as text.

Jiang pressed his feet harder against the stone. "Close it while the lie is least dressed."

She used the exterior stop at00:16.

All four lanes closed at once. The claimant branch diverted to the external discard row. Jiang made no exit choice because he had never entered.

[EXTERIOR STOP RESULT]

[Current-body effect0]

Conti weighed and indexed each packet. A matched. B matched. The1950 and2015 editions matched. The empty original square remained empty.

Aylin changed the current response order without warning. Jiang answered both feet, left flipper, right flipper, and tail. He remained irritating in the same recognizable way.

"What returned?" she asked.

Jiang looked at the four packets. "The records returned to exterior custody. I was never gone."

The audit accepted the distinction.

[ACQUISITION AUDIT RESULT]

Food stood2:17. Fuel remained0. Pressure60 and Cold16/47 remained unchanged. Current touch stayed0.

The system added the external-stop rule to the candidate ability, then opened the next comparison target.
