Chapter 348: Eight Doors Shared One Lie and Only One Had Pages

  • Next Chapter

Eight identical index doors waited inside one sealed book.

Conti verified the physical edition before Jiang entered. Title leaf, contents, Version A, Version B, hostile poem, legal materials, translation index, and editorial notes occupied one declared order. The claimant had duplicated the headings, not the paper.

"If every door says it has pages?" Aylin asked.

"Then I trust the pages," Jiang said.

Hessa checked the exterior stop. Conti held the sealed book. Aylin held the return card. Jiang settled breast-down between the chocks with both emperor feet clear and his tail above the response strip.

[FIRST PERMANENT MEMORY DIVE]

[Exterior stop:Hessa]

[Abyss Pressure active0]

The room withdrew when Jiang accepted entry.

The sealed title leaf appeared behind his tail reference. Eight contents headings appeared ahead of his beak. Each offered the same route into the collection.

[JUDGMENT AVAILABLE]

[ORIGINAL JIANG]

The phrases repeated above all eight doors with matching letters, spacing, and translation labels.

Memory Dive marked them external8/8. That did not reveal which door the pressure track used. A contamination label could expose unsupported text without solving unsupported geometry.

[RECURSIVE INDEX COUNTER]

[External headings8/8]

[Text differences0]

[Physical source order attached0/8]

[Historical person0 | historical judgment0]

Jiang started with the title leaf rather than any door. The physical packet placed contents after title. He oriented the title behind his tail and advanced beak-forward by one declared source position.

Seven doors moved to remain in front of him.

One door stayed attached to the contents position.

[ORIENTATION TEST1]

[Observer turn:one source position]

[Doors following beak orientation7]

[Door holding physical index position1]

[Verified route1/8]

The seven false doors had copied `forward`. They did not know where the book put forward after the observer turned.

Jiang selected the fixed door.

It opened onto Version A, but seven duplicate A headings appeared around it. All claimed the same1792 witness and all offered a direct path to the October legal row.

The real packet did not place legal materials after Version A. Version B came next.

Jiang moved his attention toward Version B. Six duplicate headings followed. One false heading stayed behind and displayed a line claiming the long version preceded the short.

The revision order remained unsupported.

[PAGE-SEQUENCE TEST]

[Expected successor:Version B]

[Direct legal successor0]

[Revision-order claim support0]

[False branches rejected2/8]

The counter changed tactics inside Version B. Five branches copied the correct predecessor and successor, then extended the version beyond its declared group-end marker. Each added one paragraph in the claimant’s modern vocabulary.

Conti had sealed all eight group-end positions before entry. Memory Dive could show those markers without interpreting the prose between them.

[GROUP-LENGTH TEST]

[Declared group ends8/8]

[Version B extensions5]

[Physical pages supporting extensions0]

[Claimant paragraphs5]

[Historical text gained0]

Jiang held his tail reference at the declared Version B end and advanced only when the next physical group began. The five extended branches curled around his beak orientation and offered another page that did not exist.

He marked all five physically unsupported and kept them visible for the orientation control.

One remaining duplicate used the correct group end but swapped the hostile poem and legal materials. Its page labels looked valid until Jiang checked their sealed order against the title-leaf declaration.

[ORDER-SWAP TEST]

[Declared next group:hostile poem]

[Offered next group:legal materials]

[Physical reorder0]

[Physical-order support0]

The retained candidate path carried one continuous chain from title through contents, Version A, Version B, and the hostile poem. It had earned no historical truth. It had merely stopped lying about the book.

The pressure track knocked beneath the duplicate legal successor. It wanted Jiang to accept a route because the claimant had already used it.

He refused that branch and followed physical order into Version B.

The hostile-poem heading came next. The counter placed `Spanish Stanzas` behind three doors and Jon’s critical account behind four others, as if stance could reorder the edition.

Jiang rotated his observer frame left, then right. The duplicates recentered at his beak both times. The actual hostile-poem position stayed between Version B and the legal-material section.

[ORIENTATION TEST2]

[Beak recentering duplicates6]

[Physical adjacency retained1]

[Historical stances merged0]

[False branches rejected6/8]

At00:31, only two routes remained.

The first followed the sealed edition through legal materials, translation index, and editorial notes. The second jumped from legal materials back to contents and began the same sequence again.

Both routes used correct headings. Only one respected the direction of the pages.

[LOOP TEST]

[Physical forward edge:legal->translation index1]

[Physical reverse edge:legal->contents0]

[Recursive loop1]

[Historical recurrence0]

The claimant sent four pressure knocks through the loop. Each knock returned beneath `JUDGMENT AVAILABLE` with no added source.

Jiang kept the loop open long enough to count its return. The pressure track completed one circuit in00:04 and began another without encountering a physical end leaf.

The real route reached editorial notes and stopped.

[ROUTE SEPARATION]

[Recursive path rejected1]

[Physical-order path retained1]

[Verified paths1/8]

[Claimant text source0]

[Historical attachment0]

The seven rejected doors collapsed into one external branch. The retained route displayed the modern edition’s final note boundary and no doorway beyond it.

One pressure trace left the claimant branch and moved along a carrier line outside the selected set.

Memory Dive could label the exit. Its source lock prevented Jiang from following into an unselected record.

[OUTSIDE-SET TRACE]

[Pressure traces1]

[Later record carrier compatibility1]

[Signature2 mechanical compatibility1]

[Selected-set boundary crossed by Jiang0]

[B20 reopened0]

[Historical event link0]

[Destination0 | sender0]

The trace carried saltwater-pressure and directional-warmth categories already compatible with Signature2. Compatibility remained a mechanical match, not a date, victim, or route permission.

The recursive index tried one final counter.

It placed the title leaf beyond the outside-set trace and labeled the loop a second edition. No second physical book existed under Conti’s seal.

[FALSE SOURCE EXPANSION]

[Claimed record sets2]

[Physical record sets1]

[New source accepted0]

[Counter recorded:recursive index]

Jiang chose exit at00:52.

The title, pages, false doors, physical route, and outside trace closed. The Earth floor returned beneath his breast, but his body did not yet obey him.

[RETURN ORIENTATION DEBT]

[Duration00:08]

[Voluntary movement0]

[Current responses available1]

Aylin changed the order. Right foot, tail, left flipper, left foot, right flipper. Jiang answered5/5 through pressure and muscle response without choosing movement.

At00:05 of the debt, a cold droplet struck his back. It entered no reconstructed storm row and produced no historical wetness. Hessa marked local water1 and historical effect0.

At00:08, Jiang lifted his beak by choice.

[FIRST PERMANENT RETURN]

[Voluntary exit00:52/03:00]

[Orientation debt completed00:08]

[Current responses5/5]

[Selected record restored1/1]

[Mass/order/index changes0]

[External additions imported0]

[Memory/body damage/history alteration0]

[Same-set lock00:30]

Conti opened the physical edition only after the return debt ended. Title leaf, contents, Version A, Version B, hostile poem, legal materials, translation index, and notes remained in order8/8.

Memory Dive permanent uses reached1. Pressure60, Cold16/47, mobility12%, wound1.1cm, bleeding0, and Abyss Pressure uses2 remained unchanged.

[FIRST-USE RESULT]

[Recursive-index counter survived1]

[Verified route1/8]

[Signature2 direction candidate1]

[Historical link0]

[Soul Anchorage candidate0/3]

[EP0]

Food stood1:46. Fuel remained0. Current touch remained0.

The first real dive had found one honest door.

The thing beyond it still belonged to another record.
