Chapter 806: Chapter 415: It’s Really Hard to Explain
He chuckled, "If you take him to sleep with you, just wait for Banli to cry. Do you think you’re still the same as before you had children? Now that you have a son, if you show even a little bias, the little baby will throw a fuss."
Sure enough, Banli and Cong saw her holding Hulu in her arms and stared at her together. She smiled and gave Hulu a gentle nudge, saying, "Your younger brother and sister are little misers. Go coax them. Once I finish cleaning this up, I’ll tell you guys a story."
Hulu nodded. He carefully carried the wind chime and handed it to Cong to play with. Cong, however, completely ruined the moment by grabbing it and crumpling it into a ball.
Juhua hurriedly went over to pry open her small hand, saying, "Daughter, that’s not how you play with it. If you grab it like this, what if you cut your hand?" She then turned back to Hulu, whose face was full of heartache, and said, "Don’t worry, Hulu. I’ll make you another one later. We can’t let them play with these. They’re still small and don’t know how to play."
Li Jingwen also squeezed over and said to her with the air of someone highly experienced, "Ms. Juhua, little babies just like to grab things randomly. My younger brother is like that too."
Juhua was quite speechless at the sight of this "little baby" calling a nursing infant a "little baby". Just as she was about to speak, she heard someone calling from behind, "Jingwen, you’ve been playing at Ms. Juhua’s house all afternoon. Don’t you know to come home for dinner?"
Juhua turned around and saw Meizi holding a bamboo basket filled with Chinese toon shoots. Meizi walked into the courtyard and said to Juhua, "Jingwen’s grandmother picked these on the mountain. I brought some over for you to scramble with eggs. You haven’t started picking from the toon tree at your parents’ house yet, right?"
Seeing his mother arrive, Li Jingwen rushed over and chattered away, telling her how he had been playing with Hulu and Banli all afternoon and had eaten sweet wine eggs at Ms. Juhua’s house, among other things.
Juhua brought out a wooden stool for Meizi to sit on. As she took the toon shoots and called for Pu Pao to bring a container for them, she pursed her lips into a smile and asked, "You didn’t bring your younger son. Is someone watching him?" She was playfully teasing Meizi. Now that Granny Hua had returned, she could at least help with a lot of chores.
Meizi peeled the monkey-like Li Jingwen off her leg and scolded affectionately, "You’re eating delicious things at Ms. Juhua’s house again. How about I just give you to Ms. Juhua to be her son?"
Li Jingwen shyly buried his head in his mother’s embrace and whispered, "Grandma Zhang and Ms. Juhua both told me to eat, so I ate."
Meizi was just saying that to teach her son to have some backbone and not casually beg for food. She generally wouldn’t forbid him from coming to the Zhang family to play. She and Juhua were close and interacted frequently, so they didn’t bother with empty pleasantries.
Patting her son’s back, Meizi sighed to Juhua and said, "Tell me, what kind of situation is this? We had another pointless argument. Jingwen’s grandmother doesn’t want to move back to my younger brother-in-law’s house. The old couple can’t possibly live in separate houses from now on, can they? What would that look like? Why did they even start fighting at noon? I didn’t even know about it."
Before Juhua could answer, Meizi frowned and continued, "His grandmother was crying like her heart was breaking. She said she couldn’t live comfortably at my brother-in-law’s house, but she could live well with me. I asked her, ’Did Liu’er scold you? Did she make you do a lot of chores? Did she refuse to give you good food?’ She said no to all of those. This is truly inexplicable. Liu’er didn’t make her do any work and served her food and drink, yet she complained about not living well there. Meanwhile, I’ve had her doing chores since she first walked through my door, yet she praises how good I am. People who don’t know the truth might think I’m stirring up trouble in front of my mother-in-law—isn’t that exactly what Liu’er’s mother tells people?"
Apart from finding it amusing, Juhua really couldn’t make sense of the matter either. Just as everyone had said earlier, it was all about fate and affinity; there was no logic to it.
Seeing Juhua laughing non-stop, Meizi glared at her and said, "Your family is small, so you don’t have all this messy drama. You have it easy. When I was at my parents’ house, my mother used to tell me, ’Once you’re married, many household chores and trivial matters become impossible to reason out. You just have to act with your conscience and muddle through.’ I didn’t believe it back then. Who knew it would be even harder than I thought?"
Juhua chuckled for a while before putting on a serious expression. "Who says our family doesn’t have messy troubles? Let me tell you something: every family has its own troubles, and no one can escape them. You look at our family and see us living in harmony, but haven’t you thought about how many issues my parents and my in-laws have encountered recently? They might not have originated from within the house, and were brought in from the outside, but doesn’t that still cause headaches? Take noon for example. That fight broke out, and the matter isn’t over yet. Once they get back from seeing the doctor at the market, there’ll be endless bickering."
Meizi nodded. "That’s true. It’s another messy issue. Your parents and your in-laws treat people well and are kind-hearted, but there are always people looking for trouble. My mother says there are plenty of unreasonable people in this world who don’t think like normal folks. When you meet someone like that, all you can do is stay away from them. There’s no reasoning with them at all."
