The two of them tidied up and went downstairs together.

When they arrived at the fresh market, Rose Shaw was a bit bewildered. She usually went to a supermarket if she needed to buy groceries, so this was completely different from what she had imagined.

Keith Coleman glanced at Rose Shaw and smiled. "What do you want to buy?"

"I... was going to make a pork rib soup or something." Rose Shaw’s plans were in complete disarray.

"Follow me." Keith Coleman led the way.

Rose Shaw hurried to follow. She watched as Keith Coleman browsed the various stalls before finally stopping at one.

"How much are the yams?"

"Twelve."

"That expensive?"

"These are top-grade and very nourishing. Look at how badly you’re injured. They’re perfect for a pork rib soup to help you get your strength back."

"How about ten?"

The vendor glanced at Keith Coleman, his eyes holding a hint of sympathy. "Fine, fine. Ten it is!"

"I’ll take this one."

"That’ll be exactly ten. I’ll throw in a few scallions for you."

Rose Shaw stepped forward and took out her phone to pay.

The vendor glanced at Rose Shaw, then back at Keith Coleman. "Young man, with a beautiful wife like that, you’d better treasure her."

Given Keith Coleman’s condition, it was obvious his injuries were from a fight, so the vendor naturally assumed he was some kind of good-for-nothing.

"We’re..." Rose Shaw started to say, but Keith Coleman spoke over her.

"Thanks!" Keith said, glancing back at Rose Shaw.

Rose Shaw looked away.

"I like yam and corn pork rib soup, so let’s go buy some corn."

Rose Shaw followed behind Keith Coleman. He did all the shopping, and his haggling was incredibly slick, shattering the impression she’d had of him.

"Do we need to buy anything else?" Rose Shaw asked, looking at the bags of groceries she was carrying.

"This is enough for us. If we need more, we can buy it tomorrow. Vegetables are always best when they’re fresh."

"I have to go back to work tomorrow," Rose Shaw said.

’Back at the market, everyone had mistaken her and Keith Coleman for a married couple, and eventually, she couldn’t be bothered to correct them. Buying just enough for the two of them for one day was fine. What "tomorrow" was he talking about?’

’Did he really think they were a normal married couple just living their lives?’

Keith Coleman remained silent. ’If only every day could be like this,’ he thought. The casual fantasy was surprisingly wonderful.

Rose Shaw wasn’t much of a cook, something Keith Coleman realized the moment he watched her start.

He couldn’t use his hands, so he directed her from the side.

"Boil some water and blanch the pork ribs first to get the impurities out. That way, the soup won’t have any scum."

"I usually just use an electric soup maker and throw all the ingredients in at once."

"Well, try it my way today. See if it tastes any different from your usual method."

Rose Shaw did as Keith Coleman said, putting the soup on to boil.

"Do you usually cook for yourself?"

"I learned this soup recipe from my mom. When she was still alive, she loved to make me corn and pork rib soup. Back then, being able to have a bowl of that soup... words can’t describe how happy it made me."

Rose Shaw looked at Keith Coleman, noticing the smile on his lips had turned somewhat bittersweet.

’She had always assumed that with his mixed-race heritage, Keith Coleman must have come from a decent background.’

’Besides, he had such a refined, almost aristocratic air about him.’

"My mom was tricked by a white man. He already had a wife and family back in his own country. While my mom was still pregnant with me, the man ran back home and was never heard from again."
