Transmigrated as the Villain Boss's Precious Darling
Chapter 748: Bread Is More Important Than Love
The color drained from Rosalind Green’s face, and her eyes reddened. The feelings of injustice she had tried so hard to suppress came rushing back. Choking back sobs, she told her mother about Ethan Hawthorne’s affair.
"Does she have any children?" Mrs. Green wasn’t surprised; she had already guessed as much.
’Her daughter was heartbroken, but not grieving. That meant her son-in-law couldn’t be dead. If he was alive and making her this miserable, it could only be one thing.’
Mrs. Green was more concerned about the assets. It didn’t matter where a man’s heart was; all that mattered was keeping control of the wealth. Luckily, her grandson was grown and sensible, so it didn’t matter too much that her daughter was so indecisive.
Rosalind Green shook her head. "Kenneth said she hasn’t had any children. They’re just living together."
Mrs. Green breathed a sigh of relief. "Are they living in that villa you used to have?"
"That’s the place. That woman is using all the things I furnished it with. Mom... it hurts so much." Rosalind couldn’t hold back anymore as tears streamed down her face. Her husband and her home had both been taken by another woman.
Mrs. Green, however, was unconcerned. ’She’s just using a few things. It’s not a big deal. As long as there are no children, this is manageable.’
"Don’t cry. You’re still the official Mrs. Hawthorne. That woman is just a shameless mistress who can’t be seen in public, so what is there to be afraid of? Let me tell you, the fact that our son-in-law hasn’t had children with that homewrecker means he still has you and Kenneth in his heart. After being separated for so many years, it’s normal for him to find someone on the outside to take care of him. Don’t get so hung up on it. Just think of her as a concubine he’s taken. Try to be more open-minded and you’ll feel better."
Mrs. Green felt her daughter was being far too melodramatic. ’And here I was, thinking something terrible had happened, but it’s just this trivial matter. It’s obvious Ethan Hawthorne knows exactly what he’s doing. A wife is a wife, and a mistress is a mistress. Otherwise, after four or five years, if he wasn’t thinking clearly, that homewrecker would have had a child and secured her position long ago.’
"Mom, I’m miserable. These past four years have been so hard for Kenneth and me. All the while, he was out there living it up, earning money without sending a single cent back. If Kenneth wasn’t so capable, we would have starved to death."
Sobbing, Rosalind recounted the hardships she had endured over the past four years. Mrs. Green shed tears as well. She had thought her daughter hadn’t suffered at all these past ten years; it seemed her good days were only just beginning after a long period of bitterness.
"Men are all like that. Very few of them have a conscience. As women, we can only endure it. The good thing is you’ve made it through the worst of it now. Kenneth is so promising, and you’ve recovered your son-in-law’s assets. Your best days are still ahead of you!"
"But I’m miserable. I don’t want to endure it. I want to divorce Ethan Hawthorne," Rosalind Green said, revealing her plan.
She had been hesitant, disgusted by Ethan Hawthorne’s entanglement with another woman yet unable to let go of her feelings for him. But after personally witnessing the sweet life Ethan Hawthorne and Bernice shared yesterday, Rosalind could no longer bear it. She couldn’t stay in that home a moment longer. The man himself disgusted her. There was no going back to the way things were.
Mrs. Green was startled and vehemently opposed the idea. "You can’t divorce him! Are you stupid? If you get a divorce, won’t all that wealth just be handed over to that homewrecker? Do you have any idea how much money the Hawthorne family has? You couldn’t spend it all in ten lifetimes! That money belongs to you and Kenneth. No matter how miserable you are, you have to endure it."
"I can’t endure it. I can earn my own money." Rosalind Green truly didn’t care about the Hawthorne family’s wealth. She had little desire for money; having just enough to live on was sufficient for her. ’So what if there’s enough wealth for ten lifetimes? I’m not going to live for ten lifetimes. I only have one.’
"How much money could you possibly earn? What you make in your entire life wouldn’t even be a fraction of the Hawthorne family’s fortune. Don’t you know how famous the Hawthorne family used to be? If they hadn’t fallen on hard times, a family like ours would never have been qualified to be their in-laws."
Mrs. Green was exasperated with her daughter. ’She’s in her thirties and still going on about love. She’s completely lost her mind. What damn good is love? Cold, hard cash is what really matters.’
