Chapter 31: Chapter 31: arriving at Ashford foundation

The laughter gradually faded as the four girls gathered their things.

Claire picked up her handbag before taking one final look around the room.

"I think that was a success."

Amelia smiled brightly.

"It was."

"I had so much fun."

"So did I," Eleanor agreed, fastening the clasp of her satchel.

Claire looked around one last time before nodding in satisfaction.

"We should do this again."

Vivienne smiled.

"...I’d like that."

The room, which had looked as though a fashionable storm had swept through it only moments earlier, slowly returned to something resembling order.

Unused dresses were carefully returned to their garment bags.

Cosmetic pouches were zipped shut.

Jewellery cases closed with soft clicks.

Shoes found their proper pairs once more.

Within minutes, there was little evidence of the cheerful chaos that had occupied the room all morning.

Claire nodded approvingly.

"Now we’re actually ready."

The four girls stepped out into the corridor together.

The residence hall felt noticeably quieter than it had throughout the week.

Students wandered in and out of their rooms dressed in elegant weekend clothes rather than university uniforms.

Some carried books beneath one arm.

Others wore volunteer badges already pinned neatly to their jackets or handbags.

Without the sea of matching uniforms, everyone seemed just a little more like themselves.

"It almost feels like a different university," Amelia observed.

"It does," Eleanor agreed.

"I hadn’t realized how much the uniforms made everyone blend together."

Claire laughed.

"I walked past one of the Debate Society seniors earlier."

"And?"

"I smiled politely..."

"...before realizing I almost didn’t recognize her."

The others laughed.

Vivienne glanced around as they descended the staircase.

She hadn’t noticed it before either.

Without uniforms...

The campus seemed warmer.

More colourful.

Students lingered beneath the trees, chatting over takeaway coffee.

Others crossed the lawns with picnic blankets tucked beneath their arms.

Some were clearly heading toward volunteer placements throughout the city, walking in cheerful groups much like their own.

Only five days.

That was all it had been.

Five days since she had first stepped through the gates of St. Albion.

Five days since she had met Claire.

Then Amelia.

Then Eleanor.

It was strange how quickly strangers could become familiar.

The thought made her smile.

Together, the four girls crossed the central quadrangle before passing beneath the university’s grand stone gates.

Beyond them, the university town welcomed the weekend at an altogether gentler pace.

Historic brick buildings lined broad, tree-shaded streets.

Flower boxes spilled colour from wrought-iron balconies.

Small cafés had already filled with students lingering over late breakfasts beneath striped awnings.

The scent of freshly baked bread drifted from a nearby bakery.

A violinist played beside an old stone fountain while children laughed as they chased pigeons through the square.

Vivienne slowed almost unconsciously.

"It’s beautiful."

Claire smiled.

"I’ve wanted to explore properly ever since orientation."

"There just wasn’t time."

"There will be today," Amelia said hopefully.

"If orientation doesn’t take too long."

"I’m sure we’ll have time," Eleanor replied.

Claire clapped her hands together.

"Excellent."

"Then after orientation..."

"We’re exploring."

"The four of us."

"No excuses."

Amelia laughed.

"I wasn’t planning on making any."

"Neither was I," Eleanor added.

Claire turned toward Vivienne with a knowing smile.

"And you."

Vivienne blinked innocently.

"What about me?"

"No getting distracted."

Vivienne looked genuinely puzzled.

"...Distracted?"

Claire nodded solemnly.

"Last Monday it was Anthony."

"Yesterday it was the Polo Club."

Amelia laughed.

"To be fair..."

"Neither of those quite went according to plan."

Vivienne sighed, though she couldn’t quite suppress her smile.

"...That’s hardly my fault."

"No," Eleanor agreed with quiet amusement.

"But unexpected detours do seem rather fond of you."

That earned another round of laughter.

Vivienne could only shake her head.

"I’ll do my best."

Claire smiled in satisfaction.

"Good."

"I’d quite like all four of us to spend our first Saturday together."

Their conversation drifted naturally from there.

Claire had already compiled a list of cafés she wanted to visit.

Amelia hoped to browse a boutique she had noticed during orientation.

Eleanor admitted she wanted to spend an hour inside one of the old independent bookshops tucked along a quieter street.

Vivienne listened with growing amusement.

She realized...

She wanted to visit all of them.

Not because she expected to run into Anthony.

Not because doing so might somehow change the story.

Simply because...

It sounded like a wonderful afternoon.

The realization surprised her more than she cared to admit.

Perhaps...

University life wasn’t only about changing the future.

Perhaps it was also about living in the present.

Claire slowed her pace.

"There."

The conversation naturally faded.

Ahead of them, beyond a pair of wrought-iron gates standing open to welcome arriving students, stood one of the most elegant buildings Vivienne had seen since arriving at St. Albion.

Built from warm honey-coloured limestone, the Ashford Foundation possessed the quiet grandeur of an old English manor rather than the imposing formality of the university itself.

Tall ivy climbed sections of its façade.

White stone columns framed the broad entrance.

Large arched windows reflected the clear September sky.

Above the entrance, the Ashford crest had been carved into weathered stone, understated yet unmistakable.

The grounds were every bit as carefully maintained.

Late-summer roses bloomed beside neatly trimmed hedges.

Gravel paths wound through small gardens where students gathered beneath old oak trees while waiting for orientation to begin.

Volunteers wearing Foundation badges greeted each arriving student with warm smiles.

Unlike the lively bustle of the university...

Everything here felt calmer.

More welcoming.

Almost...

Like home.

Amelia let out a quiet breath.

"...It’s beautiful."

"It is," Eleanor agreed softly.

"It doesn’t feel like an institution."

Claire smiled.

"I told you."

Vivienne stood quietly for a moment, taking it all in.

The Ashford Foundation.

Somehow...

Seeing it with her own eyes felt different from simply reading about it in a novel.

This place wasn’t merely part of Anthony’s story.

It was a place where countless students had come together to help others.

A place where new friendships were formed.

Where memories were made.

Perhaps...

She would make a few of her own here as well.

Claire gently nudged her shoulder.

"Ready?"

Vivienne looked at her friends before smiling.

"...Ready."

Together, the four girls walked through the open gates.

Joining the steady stream of students, they made their way toward the registration tables, where volunteers welcomed each new arrival with practiced smiles.

Their first Saturday at the Ashford Foundation...

Was about to begin.
