Chapter 34: Chapter 34: the Ashford foundation II

Anthony Ashford stepped onto the stage.

The applause lingered for several moments before gradually fading into respectful silence.

Today, he wasn’t wearing his university uniform.

Instead, he wore a crisp white shirt beneath a beautifully tailored charcoal blazer, dark trousers, polished black shoes, and a simple wristwatch whose quiet elegance spoke far more loudly than any display of wealth ever could.

Nothing about him was extravagant.

Nothing sought attention.

Yet the moment he appeared...

The room naturally seemed to revolve around him.

Faculty members greeted him with familiar nods of respect.

Returning volunteers straightened almost unconsciously.

Even the first-years who had never met him before instinctively quieted.

Not because anyone had asked them to.

But because Anthony Ashford possessed the kind of presence that invited attention without ever demanding it.

He acknowledged Professor Aldridge with a respectful incline of his head before stepping to the lectern.

Composed.

Dependable.

Confident.

Everything about him reflected the quiet dignity expected of the future Duke of Ashford.

Vivienne felt her heartbeat quicken.

A quiet sense of pride rose within her before she could even explain why.

There he was.

Standing before everyone not simply as a university student...

But as the representative of House Ashford.

The future Duke.

The young man who would one day inherit generations of responsibility.

Somehow...

He looked as though he had been born for that very place.

The respect filling the hall wasn’t born from his title alone.

It wasn’t forced.

It had been earned.

She watched the faculty greet him with quiet familiarity.

Returning volunteers unconsciously straightened.

Even students who had never met him before found themselves listening before he had spoken a single word.

A small smile slowly appeared on her lips.

...I’m proud of him.

The thought surprised even her.

Not because she had any right to feel that way.

But because she couldn’t help it.

This was the man she had spent years admiring through countless Chapters.

The man whose triumphs had made her smile.

Whose hardships had broken her heart.

Whose unwavering sense of responsibility had made her admire him more with every volume she read.

She had already seen him during the university orientation.

She had spoken to him.

Met him at the riding club.

Seen him across campus.

Yet somehow...

Standing here today...

He showed her another side of himself.

Not merely Anthony Ashford the student.

But Anthony Ashford, the future Duke.

And somehow...

She found herself admiring him even more.

A tiny laugh escaped her thoughts.

Honestly...

How can one not fall in love with him?

The realization slipped into her mind before she could stop it.

Warmth spread across her cheeks almost immediately.

She lowered her eyes for only a moment.

Pull yourself together, Vivienne.

When she looked back up...

She realized she was still smiling.

Beside her, Claire leaned over ever so slightly.

"...He’s impressive."

Vivienne gave the smallest nod she could manage.

"...He is."

Anthony adjusted the microphone only slightly before looking across the hall.

"Good morning."

His voice carried comfortably through the room.

Not loud.

Simply clear.

"On behalf of House Ashford..."

"...I’d like to welcome every one of you to the Ashford Foundation."

He paused, allowing his gaze to travel naturally across the audience.

"When people hear the word ’volunteering’..."

"...they often describe it as giving your time."

A faint smile touched his lips.

"I’ve never believed that’s entirely accurate."

The hall became wonderfully still.

"Time can be measured."

"Kindness cannot."

"When you spend an hour helping a child learn to read..."

"The hour eventually ends."

"The confidence you leave behind may not."

"When you visit someone who has spent weeks in a hospital..."

"You may only stay for an afternoon."

"They may remember your company for years."

His eyes continued moving calmly across the rows of students.

"This Foundation was never created simply to provide assistance."

"It was created to build relationships."

"Communities."

"Trust."

"And those things..."

"...cannot be measured in hours."

Vivienne found herself listening to every word.

She had read this part of Anthony countless times in the novel.

Yet hearing him speak in person...

She finally understood why so many people admired him.

He wasn’t speaking because it was expected of him.

He believed every word.

Anthony smiled gently.

"My hope for each of you..."

"...is not that you finish this year thinking about how much you have given."

He paused.

"I hope you leave wondering..."

"...how much you have received."

The hall remained silent.

Not because there was nothing to say.

But because no one wanted to interrupt the moment.

Anthony’s gaze continued across the audience.

Not searching.

Simply acknowledging the faces before him.

Then—

Blue.

His eyes stopped for the briefest fraction of a second.

Vivienne.

A tiny silence slipped between two sentences.

Barely noticeable.

...She’s here.

Another thought answered almost immediately.

Of course she’s here.

This is the Ashford Foundation.

His own reasoning should have settled the matter.

Instead...

A familiar thought surfaced before he could stop it.

...Why am I not even surprised anymore?

For one absurd instant...

He was twelve years old again.

Running through the Beaumont gardens while an impossibly determined little girl chased after him with unwavering persistence.

"Anthony!"

The memory struck with startling clarity.

Anthony very nearly sighed.

Or perhaps shuddered.

He honestly wasn’t sure which.

He blinked once.

The memory vanished.

His composure returned as though it had never left.

"...Leadership is often measured by achievement."

"I believe it is measured just as much by service."

"If your time here teaches you anything..."

"I hope it teaches you that no title..."

"...is more meaningful than earning another person’s trust."

Near the side of the hall, Damian happened to glance toward the stage.

He caught the almost imperceptible pause.

Just for an instant.

His eyes followed Anthony’s line of sight.

Vivienne.

A corner of Damian’s mouth lifted ever so slightly.

Poor Anthony.

He looked back toward the stage.

Nothing more.

Anthony concluded his welcome with the same calm confidence with which he had begun.

The audience erupted into warm applause.

For a brief moment, the hall echoed with appreciation.

Vivienne joined in.

Unable to take her eyes off the young man standing beneath the Ashford crest.

For reasons she knew all too well...

She thought she had just fallen in love with him all over again.
